Top Trumps has been around for a while and there are multiple different themed sets. Back when I was at school (1980s-90s) the sort of sets I was playing had themes like monster trucks or cars where the stats would be based on things like top speed, weight or time taken to get from 0 to 60mph of the specific truck/car on the card. I also had a football Top Trumps set of my own relating to the World Cup which contained cards with nations on them with stats on the number of world cup wins and the number of WC qualifications they had at that point and so on.This is a Top Trumps set too, so is great fun to play, but it isn't a classic Top Trumps set.The stats on these cards are arbitrary numbers attached to various "peculiar problems" relating to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Examples of these are "could you survive in the wild?" and there are stats on the card for Maths, Teamwork, History, Imagination and a Top Trumps Rating. There is also a related picture and a bit of text answering the "peculiar problem". When playing with my children we didn't read these blurbs, just played the game so the educational value of this set isn't great despite the fact it seems to have been designed to be educational. And I don't like arbitrarily valued stats much either. Nor is the cover to the set that appealing. Therefore if I was choosing a Top Trumps set I wouldn't choose this one. I would choose a set relating to a real-life topic my child enjoys (e.g. cars, football) or some toy range they like (e.g. LOL Surprise, Shopkins) or a set relating to a film series or book series they enjoy (e.g. Star Wars, Harry Potter) .

Im in two minds about these cards. The title doesnt really give much away about the cards at all.On the most basic level this is just like any other top trumps game. Its a list of statistics  on each card and one player picks which statistic to go for and if the number on their card is higher than the same statistic on the other players card then they win that round. On this basis i think any top trumps player could get some enjoyment out of this set.If you look deeper into the game then you will see each card has a senario on it, im not sure that they count as perculiar problems to be honest but the card goes into each senario and how it was solved. The cards seem to me like trying to make top trumps educational but still vaguely interesting,im not sure the compromise works in this case. At least it needs a title change! That said my maths loving nephew loves them because they are a bit different from his other sets. He adores facts and is a bit of a thinker so this appeals to him.Ignore the title, fact loving top trumps fans will still love this set but im still not sure how the 'use maths' fits in!

Note to self: read the info properly. I thought this would be about the ancient wonders of the world, but no, it's about natural wonders: the grand canyon, Mt Everest etc. But, I can't blame the product for my foolishness.Probably the most important criterion is: does my daughter enjoy playing this game? answer: yes she does. But if you remember top trumps from the 70s when it was all cars, aircraft and tanks, well things have come along a bit since then! In those days the categories were nice factual stuff like 'number of cylinders' or 'wingspan'. Here, owing to the fact that you're not really comparing like with like, you get arbitrary things like 'danger' and 'wonder',and things that aren't necessarily all that relevant, like 'temperature' and 'flight time from London'. The last category is an odd combination of 'height/depth'.All that being said, it still plays fine, and you get snippets of additional information about each wonder, which adds to the educational value. The games can drag on a bit though - I've rarely been so tempted to lose on purpose just to get it over with!

Original version on the left with reprint on the right. Both have the same red and white dragon image on the rear, in a similar pose to the dragon card. The picture quality looks good, but are not as good as the original. I noticed that they must have been scanned, instead of using the original images, because there is an obvious crease printed on the Elf card. This makes the change/error on the peasants fear factor unexpected. It doesn't change the game play much, because previously it could only beat the fool and sprite using fear factor. You should also notice that two key cards are missing, the ogre is good but the demon was always a game changer. It was always difficult to win if you were not dealt the demon. The card quality is perfect and is actually higher quality than the original version. The original was shiny on one side, but the back was just card.I hope that these last at least as long as the original, should do given the finish.

This is a very innovative form of top trumps, instead of the typical super heroes or cars etc (which my kids also do have and enjoy!) they’ve made it into perculiar problems designed to get kids thinking like “how would you make a castle” or others like that, and each problems top trump rating comes from categories like history, team work etc. So you play in the same way as normal top trumps. At the bottom of each card there is info on the question and problem to help kids learn.I really like the concept, especially as it makes it very educational and it’s a fun way to sneak in this extra learning but the 4* is because the concept just doesn’t flow as top trumps quite as easily and logically as some of the more traditional formats and themes of top trumps.Definitely still worth a play though, and they’re even good for kids to just browse through and read as a quiet activity on their own. Good value and quality as with all top trumps packs!

Bought both this set and series 1 after owning each in the 80s which sadly are no longer in my possession. As every other reviewer has rightly pointed out, 2 cards have been omitted from each set; while I don't see this as posing a particular problem it seems strange to me to remove the Death card which was one of only two to feature a score of 100. Personally I would have picked the Wolfman card to be omitted as it is in my opinion the worst out of a whole bunch of very poor quality pictures. But then again, as I bought them purely for the nostalgia I am not overly concerned with the artwork which as an 8-year-old I thought was amazing; while the cards have increased in size so far as I can tell, the content remains otherwise identical to the original sets. 4 stars only due to the poor choice of removing the Death card.

Just like a lot of people i had these the Horror pack 2 and Fantasy Top Trumps back when i was a kid.So when I saw they were being reissued I just had to get them so I could play the game with my 10yr old son.And like everyone else i was disappointed at the resizing and poor quality of the image and the unforgivable decision to remove 2 cards from each set, especially Demon and Death which were my personal favourites. So being stubborn and very annoyed I made my own.I googled the cards got the images and printed on photo paper and they have come out pretty good even managed to print out the backs. The only problem I did have was not being able to find better quality images of Demon and Ogre butthats life I guess.I wrote some sizing info on one of the pictures if you want to give it a go yourselves and complete your sets.

To be honest, I find Top Trumps slightly perplexing, but our boys love them, so I was pleased to be offered a more-educational-than-usual set. As always, the set comprises a pack of cards in a plastic carrier, with the theme this time being 'peculiar problems' (as in, maths problems) - a somewhat random selection of questions such as 'how deep is the ocean' and 'do followers equal influence' with facts given at the bottom of the card, and a score given for 'maths', 'teamwork', 'history', 'imagination' and 'top trumps rating'. Our boys seem to make up their own rules as to how to play, but instructions are given in the pack if you have more compliant offspring!A good way of introducing more maths into your child's play, with some educational STEM facts to boot.

As a 70's child, I was brought up on Top Trumps- and I credit them with helping me become interested in new subjects and improving my education. Now they're a great game for the whole family, and it's great to know they're working they're magic on us all (especially the kids!) while we're having fun playing!Because I'm really into the educational benefits of Top Trumps- and I'm getting old!- I love the more factual and educational subject packs and this is a great example. Anything that can help the kids learn can't be bad can it! If you're looking for other great learning one's I'd recommend the Chemistry and animal ones- and I recently found a real gem called Castle Trumps (made by Clever Decks)which is my new favourite.

This is a great and much needed addition to Roald Dahl volume 1. Loads more characters and fun to be had. My only complaint (and hence my 4 star review) is that it just doesn't make sense that Mr and Mrs Twit are the 2nd and 3rd best at brains! In volume 1 Matilda deservedly has the best brains score of 50 - she is a genius of course. But Mr and Mrs Twit have brains 60 and 65??? Having recently read the story they are morons!!!! I'm also not so sure the Grand High Witch should be better than Matilda either with a crazy score of 70?? Oh well, apart from this major error, it is still great fun as long as you have volume 1 also. Has certainly helped my 3 year old with her numbers and reading.

We have explored a number of top trumps games as my 6 year old son has developed a love for them. Despite being able to count from a young age, I've found when we first introduced these a couple of years ago, his understanding of written numbers improved dramatically, driven by his competitiveness to win! This is one of our favourites, in spite of now having many different versions of top trumps, we invariably end up coming back to these. And has also instilled a huge amount of general knowledge and awareness of the world for all of us, from the places ( or human life itself as one of the top trumps) contained within. Great for lots of family fun and highly educational too.

My 7 year old granddaughters quite like these new Top Trumps, but I miss the old ones where you compare racing car specs, etc. These cards all have a question on like, "How Deep is the Ocean?" then the details for that question read, Maths 10,Teamwork 1,History 100,Imagination 40 and Top Trumps rating 7. I've no idea how they work those stats out: it seems a bit random to me, but the girls find it interesting and are learning stuff,as each card has some interesting facts printed on the bottom. The cards help to pass the time on a long journey, but I miss the good old days of comparing "Top Speed" and "R/Min"!

Bought this to pass the time with my wife on the plane on our ways to China and Japan. We were very excited to find Guilin's reed flute caves there as we were headed that way. The categories include distance from London which was very interesting, and each card includes a little tick-box that you can tick when you've been to that place. Obviously, being top trumps, the game does get a bit old after half an hour if you're of a certain age (hmm... let me see, I could play for hours at 20! but that was with mates at university, bored out of our skulls...) It's a good pack for families and back-packers.

These are absolute perfect for Horrible Histories fans! You get the usually quality that you expect with Top Trumps cards and packaging. Perfect for keeping in the glove box of the car or at the dining table whilst waiting for dinner. Each card includes a cartoon historical figure and their stats, as well as facts about their part in history. We always find that Top Trumps are a great way to sneak some numeracy into the kids day but these have the added bonus of including a bit of literacy as they would read the facts to each other if their card won. A great addition to a Top Trumps collection.

I remember having Top Trumps cards when I was young, and can still remember some of the facts that I learned in playing with them. This particular set is a bit more educational than the ones that had, with each card featuring an interesting fact or tip. The idea is that the players will think about the tips and hopefully learn from them, although on a simple level the game can still be played without reading from the notes at all. As such I think it works quite well, although I’d have preferred the facts to be more linked to the gameplay.
