Whenever a new and original game is released, many games magazines and internet sites are fearful of something new, something that hasn't been tried before. Much like the scientific community scorns scientists who initially put forth a new theory which is in stark contrast to the accepted one.SCAR is a racing game like no other because it incorporates RPG elements, such as Intimidation, Vision, Endurance, etc. Working on a similar level to the RPG elements in Deus Ex, in order to become a better driver, you need to gain points which you can use towards upgrading the above skills. And that's what this game is all about: the driver and not the car.You also don't only test your abilities on the racing circuit but also on suburban roads and city circuits. There are 25 Alfa Romeos to choose from, from the classic Giulietta and Alfasud to the modern concept 8C Competizione. The graphics are excellent and I really have no idea why (I think it was PC Zone) called them "unimpressive" I have tried the Toca 3 demo and in my honest opinion, the graphics are worse than SCAR's.Unlike many racing games, you can clearly see the model details e.g. type of model, engine capacity etc on the rear of the car, just under the boot. The textures are also very impressive and the tracks themselves seem to be alot more detailed than Toca 3.Another good thing is that even if you have an older computer, like me, you can still comfortably play this (800mhz minimum)It also comes on only one CD and takes up a mere 600MB of disk space, unlike Toca 3 which is projecting 7GB.The presentation is the best I've seen for any game. The in-game menu screens are very easy to navigate and the game itself comes in a nice box set with a very detailed instruction manual containing 65 pages of useful information, all in English. Info includes such helpful information about the cars, RPG elements, menu screens, and even an automotive history of the Alfa Romeo company. The only cons I can see is that if you're not much of an Alfa fan, you'll probably not enjoy this game very much. Also, when racing, the entire grid of cars is composed of the same model. So, for example, if you're racing with an Alfa 147 2.0 T Spark, then all your opponents will have 147 2.0 T Spark's.Other than that, I highly recommend this game and suggest you ignore the "official" reviews because they don't tell you anything.
