The Sandisk expand wireless charger and backup is a simple idea; combined charger and phone backup. Its backed up by an app - Sandisk iXpand Charger. There are a lot of Sandisk iXpand app's in the apple store and to make it easier to find the right one there was a QR code that got you to the right place. My unit was 64Gb; the software lets you configure multiple user accounts - with passwords- though if that is something you need you likely want to look at the higher capacity bases - they go to 256gb.The charging pad has a vintage Apple feel; on your desk it is all white plastic. The large oval shape has a ridge to help you aim your phone for. For smaller phones they sit inside it; my Max phone sat on the ridge.QI is directional so you need to get the placement of your phone in the right place - it has to sit inline with the long axis of the pad -it doesnt charge if you put it on at at angle. Its pretty big for a QI charger larger than my iPhone XS Max and about 1.5cm deep. Sadly its also powered by a dedicated power plug so I cant run it from a USB port on my monitor or computer. This also means it takes up a precious power socket. The base of the unit has a purple friction pad that on my desk puts up a good fight to stop movement besides picking it up.I'm not sure why but on my iPhone the software really wants to track you at all times; I can't see the reason for that. I set mine to off and it backs the images up just fine when you put the phone on the dock. The backup isn't especially quick; a 1000 images took about 45 minutes (for around 9Gb)- but if you are leaving it on the pad to charge that is fine - the 10w QI charging from 10% battery to charged took just shy of 3 hours - whilst the phone was in an apple original case. As with other qi charging devices things get warm whilst they are charging - and using It on a 30c day I wouldn't want to use my phone afterwards as it was getting toasty. Besides your phones indication that it is charging there is. soft pink->purple led on the side that shows the device is running. The backup and charge idea is great; especially if you dont want to save your photos or backup your contacts into the cloud. The Sandisk app has been very reliable; it backed up my 3000 or so photos over a few charging sessions; and the app makes it easy to recover photos and contacts back to your device. The iPhone app also has a free up space feature; this identifies large photos and videos and makes it easy for you to delete them to recover space. Finally on the back of the unit there is a usb micro socket; no cable is included. If you connect it to your computer you can see the files on the unit as you would with other usb thumb drives. If you dont use a password to protect your files you can read them back from the device. If you did use a password the files are AES 128 encrypted; so there is some protection over the files- and dont lose your password. You can decrypt and access the files by installing Sandisk's Privateccess app onto your computer. There is a PDF on the mounted disk with a link to get that. The idea for the wireless charger and backup is great; and I do hope this is version one of a series of products. There are a number of small design tweaks that would make the pad more useful. A vertical orientation to take up less desk space and charging from USB (or even having a built in power bank) would be awesome. I don't know why Sandisk want always on location tracking; but you can decline that and it doesn't seem to have any impact. For the moment its a great idea and it works intuitively and makes use of the downtime whilst your phone charges to backup your memories.

Each time I change my phone I get one with bigger and bigger storage space each time, transferring all my photos and videos over because no one has hoards of albums full of holiday snaps any more and you just don’t want to delete them because you’ve run out of space. This gadget gives you the convenience of wireless charging and backing up your phone at the same time.I was surprised that it wasn’t plugged in via a USB socket, every phone accessory seems to utilise this feature but this has a standardised plug, a bit of a pain if you have limited sockets like me.Set up is easy, just download the app onto your device, it’s compatible with iPhone and Android, follow the instructions and you’re away.I got the 64GB version which effectively doubles the storage capacity of my iPhone and means that all my photos, videos and contacts are safely and automatically backed up every time I put my phone on to charge. There’s also an option on the app to free up space on your phone and it’s easy to transfer photos back onto your phone if you choose to.iCloud keeps telling me that I’m running out of storage for my backups so this will definitely help, I’m not paying Apple for the privilege, I’ve given them enough money! It took a while to do the first backup but that’s to be expected and I just left my phone on it overnight and it was done by the morning. You can set up several different profiles for all family members, so they each have their own saved files but I think you would probably need a bigger capacity charger if you intend to do this with more than a couple of people, they go up to 256GB so that isn’t an issue. My phone has a fairly thick case on it but this didn’t hinder the charging or backup at all but you need to make sure that your phone is place on the pad correctly, unlike some chargers you can’t just plonk it on at any angle, something I realised when I woke up one morning to 5% battery, disaster!I love my gadgets and I’m really happy with this one, go for the largest capacity you can afford and it should last you for quite some time. It also comes with a 2 year guarantee.Hope you found my review helpful.

QI chargers can be had for cheap, and we're seeing them built into all sorts of devices. The USP (unique selling point) here is that while charging your phone, it's also being backed up.You need to have the associated app installed and set up for backup to work. Charging just works, just be aware that use of some phone cases will prevent you using QI charging, unless you remove the case. And yet I don't seem to like it much. There's a couple of reasons for this. For one thing the included storage is only 256GB, about half the storage available on the largest XS Max iPhones. ie you could backup half the media on an XS Max.The back-up occurs over WiFi and is relatively slow, compared to using a cable, but about the same as with.... and this is the biggest competition here... about the same speed as backup to iCloud. While iCloud works seamlessly, you can also get a bunch of storage on Google or Dropbox, but I have to warn that neither of these or the other alternatives work as well as iCloud. If you're using Android, Google photos works fairly well, but it's worth checking to make sure it's working every so often.BUT I also found that it iXpand worked pretty well, backing up my phone overnight. When the storage is full you can connect it to a PC or laptop (and however much you may not want to do this with your phone, it's inevitable one way or another) and transfer from the iXpand to whatever more secure backup destination you have in mind.Remember that having your phone sitting on the device it is backing up to is NOT a secure backup solution, it's an interim step. So, it does work, but it isn't a complete backup solution, the way iCloud or Google Photos/Drive CAN be. QI charging works, but it's slower and less energy efficient than connecting a cable. 3.5 out of 5.

Wireless chargers have been fairly boring up until the release of the SanDisk iXpand. Now you can automatically synch and backup your photos, videos and contacts while your phone is charging. It's a neat idea and works pretty well although the backup starting is a little hit and miss in my experience. You don't need to buy anything else to get fast charging either, unlike some other manufacturers everything you need is supplied. The charger pairs with your phone through Bluetooth but also needs to join your wireless network for fastest backup. This was a little disappointing as I already have umpteen other devices using resources from my router. The associated app is straightforward to use and there is little configuration required. After an update to the firmware the initial backup kicked off on the third attempt and took two cycles to completely backup all 64GB of photos and videos I had on my iPhone XS Max.It's a chunky device that takes up a little more room that some of the thin charging discs or stands , presumably because of the wi-fi/bluetooth/storage gubbins inside but being white it doesnt look too huge on the bedside cabinet. It's probably a little more expensive than it should be but it's a neat solution.

Well, this is super convenient. For 256Gb of storage on a device that charges your iPhone or QI enabled Samsung at the same time, this is terrific value item. If you keep a lot of large high resolution photos on your camera they can take up a lot of space if you're automatically backing up to the cloud. With plenty of capacity to play with here, it will ensure that everything on your phone is safely backed up - while your phone is charging! You can even backup several phones with different profiles on the one device. It should even work through most phone cases, so you can just set it on to the charging base, which is powered by a standard plug. As the backup to the device is wireless it can take a while to backup, but that will obviously depend on how many new files you have to backup. I'm more than happy to let it work away while it is charging. This is wonderfully convenient, and some great backup/storage and charging technology from SanDisk.

Review for SanDisk iXpand Wireless Charger 256 GBYou receive what is a very well made, stylish well engineered wireless charger, but a very expensive chargerIt all works simply, place the wireless compatible smart phone, a small indictor light let you know all is charging, the charger is Qi-compatible, this is the faster charge which phones allow, I found this to be the best Qi quick charger I’ve used.Download the expand app on your phone, and you can Automatically back photos, videos, and your contacts, all you do is simply place your phone on the baseThis is a superb charger, the price is premium but If your wanting a proper quick charger, an easy way to store phones etc then this will do all that and more, clever device and one I am happy to recommend

This is a high quality, very fast phone charger with a few additional features that you may or may not find as useful. If you have a Qi type wirelessly charging phone then this will be compatible with the charger. It is easy to set up and to power a phone, you just need to lay it on top of the base unit. If you want to use the additional features, like backing up your photos – then you’ll need to take the time to install the companion app to manage your files. Like most people, I already have half a dozen places to back up my digital pictures (OneDrive, Google, Flickr etc.) so if you want to have an extra one, then this is an option. For me – I will mainly use this as a charger, though you could get a cheaper alternative that did just that if you wanted.

This is a fairly sturdy piece of technology which sits well on a shelf with its "lifestyle" look. The charging area is large enough for most phones. It acts as both a charger and an automatic back up.The software app is straightforward to set up and works well, it automatically connects to the phone when in range, the backups are unobtrusive and comprehensive, there are a range of notifications which can be set within the app , i muted most of these as i was happy it was doing its job. There is a notification for firmware update which is encouraging. The only issue i found was that a phone in a case did not charge efficiently, without a case charging was fine.
