Like many folk here, I make my own greetings cards but have very limited space. I had an awful cutter where you dragged the blade across, but not only did the blades blunt very quickly but even worse, was that the card was 'drawn' into the cutting edge and so the cut was seldom true.Wanting a professional job from amateur money, I came across this Rexel, which I think I bought from my local out-of-town branch of Staples - it's most probably too specialist an item for you to find in your local WHSmith, for example. It was quite an investment at the time, though I knew immediately that I now had the quality product I needed. The hard plastic base is solid yet light and doesn't seem cheap, with all the edges smoothly finished. I haven't scratched or damaged the upper surface, it's durable but that doesn't mean you can start using it as a cutting board, though! The blade mechanism is reassuringly well bolted on; the handle fits the hand nicely and inspires confidence.I don't use it often and I don't try and cut through great thicknesses, so it won't surprise you to learn that I'm still on the first blade. Probably a thousand cuttings over the past three years? would be my wild guess. I just know that if and when I need it, it'll do the job accurately and safely and without that dreaded shredding at the edges of the card. The blade action is a positive one and you can 'feel' the blade slicing through the handle, which is very satisfying! I also find invaluable the detailed measurements on the base which allows for easy and accurate sizes to be attained. If there is a slight criticism, it won't allow very thin widths, say for instance your first attempt was too wide and you want to cut a bit more off. It is sometimes possible but it becomes guesswork. For the home or small office and for craftspeople, then this Rexel is ideal. It can be stored almost anywhere, if you detach the safety guard, even on its side, until needed. Highly recommended.

This is a mid-grade guillotine, suitable for serious work and sized so that you can easily and accurate cut SRA3 paper. It is very sturdy and stable, and the glass base means that it will never warp like the sub-£100 metal ones always do. There's a decent amount of weight to the blade, and it will happily cut 25 regular (80gsm) sheets in one smooth chop -- about twice as many as the budget ones do. It has a built in clamp which means that you don't have to press down on anything to stop the paper shifting, and this really does work well. The laser guide is a bit of a fiddle. It can be adjusted with the supplied Allen key, but it doesn't hold its adjustment particularly well, and it is very finicky and hard to get right. It has its uses, but, for general stuff, the good range of lines printed on the glass bottom is much more useful. Incidentally, this was also the case with the big (£3,000+) guillotines we used to use at work -- the measurements were always better than the laser guide for getting stuff really good. There is a nice catch on the blade which means that you have to pull it out before lifting, which is a good health and safety feature. The guard itself is fairly flimsy and was the first thing to get damaged. There is also no feature to force you to leave the blade down. All in all this is a very significantly better product than the bargain guillotines that litter many offices. It gives a good cut, does a reasonable amount of paper, and can produce some accurate results. It's especially good when trimming paper to a consistent size, which never really works when you're trying to use a knife, or, indeed, a cheap guillotine.

Very impressed, opened the box and cut 125 sheets of SRA3 down to a5 flyers in around half an hour. The good:Laser light alignment! Easy to calibrate too.Paper clamp is rigid and does its job.Cuts up to SRA3 (and A2 sideways but that would be a bit awkward.)All the essential parts are made of metal, feels sturdy. The bad.The paper edge guide is really flimsy, and you have to give extra attention on every cut to ensure it is fully perpendicular. It really lets down a beautiful and sturdy product. All in all I get the feeling that this will last years of heavy use providing I stick to the cutting limits (25 sheets 80gsm, and I guess 6 sheets 300 gsm).I got this used from Amazon, even at the new price I would recommend this guillotine.----------------------Edited 13 Feb 2013,After 3 months the safety guard snapped at the base making the guillotine frustrating to use. Planning on removing the guard but will have to be extra careful. Its a shame as this units is so well made apart from the guard base and the paper guide mentioned above.

Excellent product - good quality and accurate. The laser light feature is very helpful, it directs a beam of light down the cutting edge to show where the paper will be cut - it requires a little adjustment time to time, but its greatest benefit is that it shows where the cut will start. The base is not glass as referred to in some material, but very strong perspex. This is a great machine for cutting A3 photographs, including on backing boards, which is what I use it for - fast and very effective. Of course, the odd drawback, such as trimming a milimetre or less may cause a fold on occasion - but never serious, and not really fair to mention as this is a solid cutter which will be on my desk for a long time.I am a pretty demanding customer given I take my photography seriously and do not like anything less than a precise product. With this, I can achieve it - well worth my investment.

I go along with the other reviews, by and large. I have had this for more than a year now, and it is still sharp and still working. The base is good, firm, strong, and well line-marked. The construction is solid and indeed it will cut 20 sheets comfortably, 25 at a push. All the more surprising then, that this good cutter is adorned with three such flimsy add-ons. The perspex safety guard, I took one look at and binned, it has never been fitted. The paper guide, is so wobbly as to be totally useless. And the laser guide is fun and occasionally has been useful but must be readjusted every time you use it.None of these actually interfere with its cutting performance which is excellent, hence the 4 star rating. I would have given it 5 if the paper guide had been usable. If you shop around, you can find it at quite competitive prices too, in which case I would recommend it.

Very fast courier delivery, all intact.I got the impression after reading and comparing reviews that anything cheaper than this wouldn't work so well. Cuts cleanly and positively, which is the main thing you would want and the self-sharpening is a plus.Nice design more or less, it loses that one star for the same reason others have mentioned. You have to raise the blade completely and hold it when positioning the item to be cut and small items like business cards are fiddly to position too as the back stop doesn't go all the way to the blade.. Minor niggles, but worth mentioning. The safety guard also gets in the way, but unless you are terminally accident prone, in thrall to health and safety or under 5,then it's not really needed anyway.

Bought this to cut fairly small items. Had to remove the blade guard completely as you cannot see what you are cutting. Also where the blade guard fits there is a bolt and a 2cm gap that does not have anywhere to butt upto at the top. This would not be a problem for large pieces of paper but with small ones you lose the guide. Managed to improvise and glue a piece of lego into the gap which now provides the guide at the top. This is a fundamental flaw which should be addressed. Having said that with the new improved lego adapter and the plastic blade guard removed this product works well and cuts beautifully.Updated my rating 5/2/16.I have had this cutter nearly 4 years and it still works well so have given it another star.

An excellent product for the price and ideal for home use. The safety catch is a bit of a fiddle to operate but its there for a reason and once mastered I can live with it. The safety guard makes it difficult to trim very small items but, again, the guard it there for a reason ~ and I dare say that more expensive guillotines of this type are similarly protected. Some folk remove the safety guard, which is possible, in fact it can be a bit of a puzzle to make it fit in the first place! Still, I'd rather play safe and ensure the guard is in situ at all times. All in all I think it is a great product and it suits me very well.

I previously had an Xcut Guillotine which was half the price of this one. I was a little dubious about spending double on the Rexel but I wanted something that was better quality, sturdier and easier to use. Even though the Xcut did the job, this Rexel ClassicCut is brilliant! It is easy to cut on the line (without the guard on), it cuts a sharp clean line, and my working time is so much faster now - I didn't realise it would make so much difference having a better product! I am a wedding stationery designer so having an excellent guillotine is vital!! I would definitely recommend this product for small business use.

I found this guillotine to be quite capable and sturdy in construction. The blade is sharp and the assembly is straightforward. Use of the guillotine is fairly simple. I am using it to make my wedding invitations and the guillotine is able to cut three 255gsm pieces of card at a time. Highly recommended***Update: It's been a couple of months since I've bought the guillotine. The blade is still extremely sharp and I've managed to get through all 130 wedding invitations each with 4 additional card inserts. That's a lot of card! I'm really happy with this purchase. It's very convienient to own ***

I finally decided to get a guillotine for my card making, since the normal paper cutters were leavinga ragged edge. When I saw the write up for this one I was dubious about spending that much money! However, I am so glad I did, this cuts to perfection every time. It was easy enough to put togetherand the safety guard protection is ideal. This cuts card and paper so easily, no ragged edges and evenmy photos I print from the computer get cut down with this now lol! Well worth the money, it is well made, and looks as if it's going to last a long time. *Fingers crossed*!!

This was purchased for my wife to use on her hobby of card craft work. It is rated as being capable of cutting up to ten (10) sheets of paper. That, of depends, of course, on the weight (gsm) of the paper to be cut. I have had experience of many office guillotines throughout my administration career. I do NOT think this will cut 10 sheets of paper, except, perhaps tracing paper. Nevertheless, it WILL suffice for my wife's needs and she is happy at the upgrade from a rolling blade cutter.

8.8.2014

Now THIS is a guillotine! It's solidly built without being chunky. It's razor sharp, like Gillette Mach 3 sharp, has a very smooth action and was delivered in 48 hours. This would be equally good for home use or small business use (as it's being used for by me). For under £40, it's a bargain. I will be expecting years of faithful service from it and I don't think I'm going to be disappointed. Highly recommended.

9.8.2014

Nice bit of kit.it lost one star because the perspex safety guide makes it impossible to judge exactly where it is cutting. That is not a problem providing you are cutting to a standard size, e.g. A5, but awkward otherwise. of course you can always remove the guide, and risk chopping off your fingers...Not recommended by the manufacturer, but it is tough enough to cut vinyl floor tiles - one at a time.

23.4.2019

The best guillotine we have used and great value for the price. It cuts with a very clean professional cut. It can even handle thicker items such as plastic thermal binding covers we cut down to A5 size. The blade is best used without the guard fitted but is razor sharp and pretty lethal so never leave blade in up position and be careful when using this way unguarded.
