Having been a avid fan of the Microsoft Train Simulator, I was very pleased to hear that Kuju were designing a new Train Simulation program. After a very long wait and regular checking of the website, my pre-ordered version hit my doorstep today (Saturday).Having installed it and in keeping with most EA products, you have to keep the DVD installed to play the simulator. I'm not a fan of this process as one scratch on the DVD, and you're stuffed!! Still, I stuck with it and have spent most of the day getting the grips with it.The first point I would like to make is if you are a regular user of MSTS, Rail Simulator takes a little getting used to. Accelerating/Braking is the biggest issue. In MSTS you use D to accelarate and A to decelerate/brake depending upon the engine. In Rail Simulator they are reversed which takes some remembering. I haven't checked to see if you can change this in the options. However, graphically it is excellent and way beyond anything MSTS is capable of. All the routes are very detailed and, contray to other reviews, I haven't experienced any issues at all regarding the quality of the package and certainly would not consider it a beta version. Admitedly, there are only 3-4 scenario for each route (4 of them) so there isn't alot to keep you occupied. This will no doubt improve when they release the add-on development tools promised and the user community gets to work on it.Overall, this is a very enjoyable piece of software, which has been developed with the user community in mind. Given the success of MSTS, I hope this simulator gets the support it richly deserves.

As veterans of various earlier train simulators (Eisenbahn, Microsoft Train Simulator & TrainZ), both my son & I have found Rail Simulator very clearly ahead of the rest. The game installed & ran immediately without problem on a fairly low-spec XP desktop. It IS a realistic simulator as well as a game, so some careful driving is required - but not to any unreasonable or awkward extent. The quality of both graphics and sound offers very significant improvements over the other simulators. This looks close to being a railway video, rather than a PC game. Both landscapes and rolling stock have a high degree of convincing realism, rather than the "cartoon" character of the earlier simulators. The trackwork, whilst being finely detailed, has convincing slight irregularities and mucky patches. Buildings and landscapes (e.g. fields) likewise. Rolling stock is convincingly weathered and extra instances of the same item (e.g. the Black Five loco) are not carbon copies but subtely varied as well as being differently numbered. Carriage interior views are similarly good and realitically peopled as well. The overall "driving" experience is enjoyably convincing - to the extent that the player feels immersed in the simulated railway and inclined to remain so.Route modelling, though not quite as easy as TrainZ is none-the-less an inviting - and more rewarding - activity in its own right. A good inventory of resources and materials seems to have been included - so there is plenty of scope to construct your routes and to make them varied and interesting.

Having got the game at Christmas, I must say that the potential is huge for this game; it's a clear step forward from MSTS in most respects, but as many people have pointed out here, it does have flaws. The answer to this problem is that the development team are still putting hours of input into patches and improvements (they are often present on UKTS forums) and in my eye this is a better way to improve a game to it's potential. The real problem in my opinion, however, are people's expectations: So much hype is built up towards the release of a new game, that people get over-excited about what will be included. OK, so there ARE some silly flaws (being worked on)but if you really want to be pleasantly surprised by this great new game, then lower your expectations (for now) of what it can offer you - remember that it has taken MSTS over 6 years to get to the stage it is at. So don't necessarily take the people who immediately slam this new kid on the block so seriously - at least give it a chance! I have and I like it...Hope this helps, but bear in mind it is my own opinion on the matter. I'm no genius!

Rail Simulator is a quantum leap forward on Microsoft Train Sim 1. The grahics, frame rate and look of the rolling stock, plus accurate detailing of the routes supplied (only 4 at presnt) are excellent as is the track. Dynamics - rocking trains, points noises and scenic touches like moving water, 'live' smoke and moving people (and door opening) takes train simm to a new high. However their are plenty of bugs. My son is having problems loading on a new high spec lap top and some controls don't seem to work correctly. For driving, the absence of advance information on speed restrictions and time tabling of trains needs improving. The game works differently to MSTS1, so it takes a little getting used to,but reports say the use of the editing tools is very easy (something I don't have time to indulge in).Once new routes are available, this game will take a lot of beating, however we still need to see what Train Sim2 will be like? It may be like the old Beta v VHS wars, winner takes all.I do recommend this game, especially at the Amazon price.David B

With 58 reviews do you need another one? Well the purpose of this review is to tell all early adopters that this game does work with Windows 7. It may tell you it isn't intended for this operatinbg system but when you eject the disc you will, hopefully, get a chance to use with recommended settings. Choose this option reinsert the disc and all shouldf be well. On a more general note nothing is too hard, I'm not a frieght driver by the way, and the scenery is very good. Yup there is 'pop-up' and yup it slows when there is a lot on the screen but that's OK by me. I enjoy pounding up the East Coast main line driving a Deltic with nothing much to see outside the cab just like the real thing and Ilove driving a slow train into Paddington Station at speeds of about 30mph throughout the whole of the return trip. Hopefully you will too. You have to be a bit of a train freak but as the ground floor of my house is platform 3 and upstairs is platform 4 I quallify. Buy it and have fun.

The graphics in this game are much more realistic than the old Train Simulator, the engines and rolling stock look a lot better and the cab views are really good, especially the way you can move the view around with your mouse. The physics also seem to be far more realistic, it takes a while to get trains up to full speed and of course to stop! There are also several nice features which were missing from Train Sim; being able to change cabs, automatic warning system, turntables, passengers on platforms etc. When the developer tools come out in a few weeks (at time of writing) and people start creating their own routes and activities, this is going to be the must have piece of software for anyone interested in train simulation.

I got the game recently and immediately patched it with the first patch. I've not had any technical problems, but I did have to tune the graphics settings. Overall I've found the game satisfactory, the scenarios are varied and the controls are realistic. A few minor gripes with the use interface, the text is often hard to read and it would be nice to change the points from the map.
