The Gathering Storm expansion adds two main things to the game: Goals and Solitaire Mode. There are a handful of extra cards as well which are nice too.GoalsThe goals addon is pretty simple: there are "first" goals which award 3 VP to the first player (or players if tied) to meet the requirements. This includes first to discard, first to one world of each production type, first to play a 6-cost development, and some others. The second type is "most" goals. These award 5 VP to the player with the "most" of a certain item. These are most developments, production worlds, windfall worlds, and largest army. These can be stolen from each other.Honestly, this is something that should have been included in the original game and I think it adds interaction to what was essentially multi-player solitaire before.Solitaire ModeThe solitaire mode looks incredibly complex upon first reading, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty straightforward. Place your 2 actions and roll 2 dice to see what the "robot" does and follow the instructions. One of the main issues I have with it is that it takes a completely different strategy to beat, so you can't really use it for practicing strategy. It also can be frustrating as you can't effectively play production and consume actions without giving the robot a ton of points.Overall, it's a nice addition to the original game, but for ~$18 it's definitely on the pricey side for what you get. Especially since the main game mechanic should have been included in the original.

When I first played 'Race for the Galaxy' I genuinely did not have a clue what was going on. It seemed rather too needlessly complicated for a simple card game. But then.... after my third comprehensive thrashing, I suddenly had one of those moments when it all fell into place (and I understood the rules). OK, this is one of those games you have to persist with, but once you've mastered the basics, you realise how clever the game dynamic is, with a million different permutations. The expansion continues the story of galaxy domination and allows for more players and more start off planets. There's also more chance to get Victory Points with various peripheral targets. But the best thing about this game is the clever way you can combine cards and glean more cards and victory points every turn. This requires a heap of skill especially since there's no direct combat between players. It's basically, build, explore, trade and gather victory points. You need to be a pretty disnerning game player to get a kick out of this..... but it's fun for those who persevere.Only drawback - the rule book is a little heavy-going with tortuous explanations which would look better in an instruction leaflet on how to put up a Korean shelving unit.

"Race For The Galaxy: The Gathering Storm" is the first expansion for game "Race for the Galaxy".Definitely it's the best from three available expansions. Inside You'll find:1 Replacement Gambling World Card4 Start World Cards (5-8)18 Game Cards7 Player Action Cards (for 5th Player)2 2-Player Action Cards17 Blank Game Cards1 Contest Entry Card9 Victory Point Chips (7 x "1", 1 x "5", 1 x "10")4 "Most" Goals (Large Tiles)6 "First" Goals (Small Tiles)8 3VP Goal Chips1 Play Mat (Solitaire Game)14 Counters (Solitaire Game)2 Custom Dice (Solitaire Game)InstructionsRules are stay the same but You get goals which could determinate winner. This is very good innovation, because You stop try to build "perfect" world and start to meet goals. Game become to be more competitive and interesting.Second important thing that You also get solitary variation of Race for the Galaxy. But solitary play is pretty different than normal game. Dice determinate what Your opponent will do, so You cannot predict opponent's moves and prepare Yourself. But anyway it's quite fun.

First off, Race for the Galaxy is my favorite game right now. I own about 40 games, and we can't stop playing Race.More cards is a good thing. There aren't too many in this expansion (17), but they are very good cards. This expansion focuses on 3 other areas: adding a 5th player (teal), adding a single player mode, and the most & first goals. The most and first goals will be familiar to Catan players. The 5 point most goals behave just like the Longest Road in Catan. Goals add more interaction with your opponents- keeping an eye on their tableaus. The single player is surprisingly very fun. Like everything in Race, there's a learning curve for understanding all the symbols. But,once you walk through the rules once, the symbols make sense and you play with ease. The expansion includes like 18 make your own cards. I have no idea what to do with these, but someday I may Google to see what others have done with them.Overall, it doesn't feel like there's much in the box. I also bought the 2nd expansion, and having both just feels right.

My only complaint about this expansion is the number of goal cards provided. The rules suggest you pick 2 of the 4 "ongoing" goals (the ones that change hands, depending on who has the most of <some card type>) and then 4 of the 6 "first to reach x" goals, which means that there is a lot of redundancy in what goals you see.My wife and I easily came up with a number of other goals but without having a blank template like they provided for the actual cards, we had to come up with a more convoluted means of incorporating our own.The rest of the expansion is fine and an excellent addition to the game. Though the new version of the Alien Rosetta Stone planet is stupid broken.

My wife and I play the original game quite a bit. This expansion, as well as the second expansion, was a great way to add more cards for more variety in play, and more players to the game. This expansion also comes with a few blank "make your own" cards which were a lot of fun to include in our usual group. There is also the addition of a single player "bot". While the bot feature is initially confusing, it turns out to be an elegant paper robot "AI" to play against. Unfortunately, while this is a novel idea, it is not a feature that I will use much because the whole point of table top games is to play with other people, still a neat idea.

Excellent product. Brand new, stellar quality, amazing delivery speed, and securely packaged. As for the game itself, this is the first RftG expansion, and adds to the base game in a great way. Added variety for starting worlds and the achievement tiles are particular highlights. On a more technical note for those who know the game well, it's nice to see the Genetic worlds beefed up in power a notch by new 6-cost Developments, considering how hard they were to pull off in the base game.Totally recommended to give the multiplayer game some extra kick, but the single player game mode probably won't see much use - it's a little fiddly.

I love the original game and this expansion is almost perfect. The start worlds are new and balanced and there are some very interesting new playing cards. The single player Robot is well done. It's challenging and takes a different strategy than a human player but is plenty beatable; well on easy anyway, I haven't tried the hard version. The only negative is that there are not all that many new cards in this set. However there is almost no filler, all of the new cards are unique. Combine that with a well done single player mode and I highly recommend this expansion for anyone who likes the original.

If you enjoy Race for the Galaxy, this is the expansion to get. The new cards work well with the existing game rules without dramatically changing gameplay, which is nice if you want more variety in the starting worlds and high-value developments. It also introduces a set of goals, which are similar to the Longest Road and Largest Army in Settlers of Catan. They aren't terribly disruptive to the existing game.I haven't played the solitaire robot game, since part of the fun is beating your friends, so I can't comment on that component.

I like the added extra player. The goals took me a while to get used to, but they do add more interaction to the race for the galaxy. I like the solitaire game, and the little abstraction board for keeping track of the robot's credits and economy. It's pricey for what you get - extra action cards, goals, new start worlds and other added developments and worlds - but so what? This is a great game and The Gathering Storm adds to the awesomeness of the game!

My husband and I like to play Race for the Galaxy, and we have enjoyed playing with this expansion. The game play changes a bit: since there are more ways available to acquire victory points, your strategy must adapt to the new possibilities. I tried the solitaire version; if you really enjoy playing solitaire games you might enjoy it, but we will probably only play this game with others.

My Wife and I love RftG and this is why we purchased the 1st expansion. I like the goals and new cards, just was a bit disappointed it didn't have as much for the price as I'd wanted. If you also want the solo game it is a bargain, but seeing as we only use it as an expansion to the two player advanced game, this is the only reason I would give it 4/5 opposed to 5/5.

This expansion adds a good set of cards and it adds the objectives which I'm kind of torn on. I don't like that they're making the game more complicated when it doesn't have to be. The game is already fantastic. I would definitely recommending getting this expansion when you get the base game though. It adds a lot to the game when you have a larger pool of cards.

21.5.2015

Race for the Galaxy might be my favorite board game right now. This expansion lets you play with more people, which is always wonderful, but also adds goals and new planets. I can't tell you how much I love the game and how much this expansions makes it even better and more complicated (in a good way).

19.10.2015

For me, this is the only expansion that is necessary. I feel it balances the game, making Alien, military, and windfall strategies able to compete better with development blitz or produce/consume strategies because of the few cards it adds. Also, the solitaire game is surprisingly good.
