A rollerball pen dispenses a water-based liquid or gel ink through a ball tip similar to that of a ballpoint pen. The less-viscous ink is more easily absorbed by paper than oil-based ink, and the pen moves more easily across a writing surface. The rollerball pen was initially designed to combine the convenience of a ballpoint pen with the smooth "wet ink" effect of a fountain pen. Gel inks are available in a range of colors, including metallic paint colours and glitter effects. The advantages of this pen are as follows Roller Ball pens were introduced in 1963 by Ohto Japan who were at the time known as Auto Japan.[1] There are two main types of roller ball pens: liquid ink pens and gel ink pens. The first type uses an ink and ink supply system similar to a fountain pen, and they are designed to combine the convenience of a ballpoint pen with the smooth "wet ink" effect of a fountain pen.Gel inks usually contain pigments, while liquid inks are limited to dyestuffs, as pigments will sink down in liquid ink (sedimentation). The thickness and suspending power of gels allows the use of pigments in gelled ink, which yields a greater variety of brighter colors than is possible in liquid ink. Gels also allow for the use of heavier pigments with metallic or glitter effects, or opaque pastel pigments that can be seen on dark surfaces.Liquid ink roller ball pens flow extremely consistently and skip less than gel ink pens do. The lower viscosity of liquid ink increases the likelihood of consistent inking of the ball, whereas the higher viscosity of gel ink produces "skipping", that is, occasional gaps in lines or letters. In comparison to ballpoint pens,Less pressure needs to be applied to the pen to have it write cleanly. This permits holding the pen with less stress on the hand, saving energy and improving comfort. This can also translate to quicker writing speeds. This is especially true of liquid ink pens. The inks usually have a greater range of colors due to the wider choice of suitable water-soluble dyes and/or to the use of pigments. They tend to write finer lines and more clearly than ballpoint pens do.however the disadvantages are Water-based roller ball ink is more likely to smudge than a ballpoint pen's oil-based ink because water-based ink dries more slowly than its counterpart. Also if one writes in a notebook, closing it before the ink dries can stain the opposite page. Gel ink dries much more rapidly than liquid-ink, making it much more, but not completely, resistant to smudging. This can also prove a problem for left-handed writers.Roller ball pens with liquid-ink are more likely to "bleed" through the paper. Liquid ink is more readily absorbed into the paper due to its lower viscosity. This viscosity also causes problems when leaving the tip on the paper (to pause for a thought for example). The bleed-through effect is greatly increased as the ink is continually absorbed into the paper, creating a blotch. This does not affect gel-ink roller ball pens as much. This is one way through which the thickness of gel-ink gives it an advantage, in that it isn't as prone to being absorbed. Though the bleed-through effect of a gel-ink roller ball is greater than that of a ballpoint, it is usually not too significant.Roller ball pens generally run out of ink more quickly than ballpoints because roller balls use a greater amount of ink while writing. This is especially true of liquid-ink roller balls, due to gel ink having a low absorption rate as a result of its thickness. Neither lasts as long as a ballpoint.Uncapped roller ball pens are more likely to leak ink when, for example, placed into a shirt pocket, but this is easily avoided by recapping the pen.A roller ball tip is more likely to clog and jam when writing over correction fluid that has not yet completely dried. This often renders the ink cartridge useless.A liquid-ink roller ball is likely to leak during flight on an airplane with a pressurized cabin, although variations that are leak-proof are created to be airplane safe.

The Pilot G2 pen has been around for a long time, and I've been using them for at least the last 20 years! Throughout that time they have been the best roller ball available, in my view, and great value for money too.Although listed as gel pens the ink is more fluid than most, but it flows a lot better as a result, and feels more like a fountain pen than a biro in use. Be prepared not to touch your writing for a couple of seconds, or it may smudge. Unlike a biro you don't need to apply pressure to the tip, and that makes your writing more elegant and places less strain you your wrist. Your best writing experience is always with a nib pen, using traditional ink - it gives you a flow and lightness like nothing else. The closest I've come to that is with these G2's, and I find them very enjoyable and rewarding to use when the full fountain pen experience is not practical. These days there are lots of colour inks to choose from but I recommend you stick to the stronger solids like black, red, blue, green. The inks are light-fast too, unlike a biro. The pastel shades and the white in particular will not show up so well on paper. Remember that these are inks, so the white will not stand out well on black or dark card. If that's what you want you need a paint pen instead. A lot of the negative reviews here are due to this misunderstanding rather than the pen itself. Finally, and to the credit of Pilot, the barrel of these pens unscrews, allowing you to fit a refill. That's an excellent feature and helps prevent the waste of chucking out an entire pen when only the ink has run out. The less plastic pollution can be achieved the better, and Pilot are to be applauded here. These are excellent pens, and I long ago threw out my old ball-points in favour of them. Highly recommended!

I don't know why, but I have a thing about writing in purple ink when I am doing any sort of creative writing. Trouble is, purple ink is very hard to come by. Most of the time, when I do find a pen with purple ink that I like they get discontinued, so being able to buy in bulk this way, makes me a very happy lady indeed. Plus they are refillable! So as long as I can get refills I shall never be without a purple pen again. This is something I have not looked into yet, but I will.In addition, these pens do write very well, which I am sure is down to the smoothness one gets from the rollerball and Pilot's unique smudge proof, gel ink formula. The purple colour is nice too.Sometimes purple ink can come out as a very insipid colour but this is bright and stands out well. Just how I like it.These G2 Pilot Pens come in a range of sizes (four points) with assorted colours, although I am not sure if each size has a purple ink option. They are also retractable and have a nice contoured design that makes them lovely to hold alongside its comfortable rubber grip. All in all, if you are looking for a pen with purple ink, with a 0.7mm (fine) point, then this is perfect solution for your needs!

I wanted to make labels with white text on a black background and couldn't find a suitable transfer set so I went with a white pen. I chose the pilot because I really like there pens - I have packs of G207's in other colours which heavily influenced me decision to choose this pen.Externally, the pen is almost exactly the same. The clear bits are clear and the coloured bits are the same colour as the ink.Well, I say 'ink' but it seemed more like corrector fluid. I know that my other G207's are not as colourfast as the average ballpoint but this was particularly bad. Of course, I wasn't writing on paper or card. I was writing on PVC tape which might be why it didn't seem to set at all and could be wiped off after 5 minutes. In the end I put clear tape over the top to protect the text. This might have been necessary had I been using my other pens so I'm not penalising Pilot too much for this. The pen is still really comfortable to hold and generally flows well.

I used to buy these for use at work as they were such a pleasure to hold and write with. The ink delivery is flawless, they do not ‘gunge-up’ like the cheaper alternatives, and last quite a long time. Don’t bin them when they run out, just buy the refills and keep using. My only complaint is people keeping ‘nicking’ them because they are so good (that includes my wife!!!). I find my writing is a lot clearer when I use these pens as they are so pleasurable to use - the grip is so ergonomic in shape that it is sculpted to be perfectly balanced when resting between your fingers. the pen is very light (not heavy to hold). I used to look forward to taking minutes in meetings just to use this pen!!!I have bought cheaper alternatives, but ink leaking over my fingers and hard rubber resting sleeves just put me off so I returned to buying these. You get what yo pay for I suppose :)

I am not a teacher busy marking books, although I hear red ink is no longer de rigeur for academic correction; green is more likely used now, but I do need to make certain details in my work stand out, to remind me of important points, red letter days.Scarlet ink always does that for me - illuminates and emphasises - jogs the memory and generally draws attention. These gel pens are my favourites, they write smoothly and evenly, brightly and clearly. Uniball is the manufacturer of choice for me. The tactile red rubber grip, the clear barrel that shows what's left (you can buy refills) and the neat cap to top it all off. They never leak and look slim and smart. As we all should!

After being one of those people who are constantly finishing exams last (or not at all in some cases), I decided that enough was enough and so bought these pens after reading the positive reviews. They don't feel heavy and bumpy in the hand like most pens and they don't feel like they're actually scraping into the paper - instead they glide quickly over the paper and don't give me a dead hand. With the first time using them, I actually finished my exam second (never done that before) and managed to get a very respectable grade. Not even joking, I owe my exam results to these pens (haha). Will never go into another exam without them ever again!

I love the way these pens just seem to glide across the page, making the chore of writing in this digital age a pleasure rather than a chore. I always have one or two on my desk at home and in work and hate writing with anything else except a nice Parker I keep exclusively for client meetings. Since they do seem to run out quite quickly and go missing occasionally, I decided just to buy in bulk and save money in the long run!The ink does stay damp for a while so is prone to smudging when writing on greetings cards etc. but other than the fact they do seem to run out quite quickly these pens are just a joy to write with.

Absolutely loved these pens, brilliant for general use.I found myself at a loss looking for pens that I could use for taking notes and general work. The market seemed flooded with so many different options, all of which were 'quick drying' and 'comfortable for extended use'. Having gone through a few pens, and made rather a habit of using different pens, I have found that fantastic pen that I was searching for.Look no further than the Pilot G2s.My only (slight) negative was that they seemed to run out a little quickly, but maybe that's because I was writing with them so much because I enjoyed using them!

11.11.2014

These pens are pretty much the only thing I write with, sure they're kinda expensive, but honestly, I find it difficult to use anything else after using these for so long. They write so smoothly and quickly that everything else feels slow, like they have a fault, to the point that these don't give me hand cramps when writing huge essays. My only complaint is that they seem to run out quickly, but being a student at college, I tend to write at least 3-4 pages per day, so that's probably why.Final verdict? Great for everything from occasional note taking to writing 10 page essays, would definitely reccomend

These are great pens, they always start (unlike some inexpensive ball point pens), you can leave them in your car, or a pocket and they do not leak...they don't seem to dry-up either. The writing action is smooth, consistent and dense, so it photocopies/scans perfectly. The ink does not generally soak through cheaper paper and never "blobs" and dries quickly/instantly on most surfaces. These pens are really fabulous value from Amazon...if you don't believe me buy one and you will soon be convinced! This retractable version is in my opinion preferable to the capped version as you do not have a cap to lose!

17.8.2016

Very comfortable to use. Well built, solid, reliable. However, it was purchased for adding highlights to drawings - and is not best suited to this, since the ink is not opaque enough. It would be better to use this pen on dark card for card craft, as the ink flow is fast, smooth, and the writing can be very fine.Given 4/5 as it didn't fit the purpose I'd bought it for. I'll hang on to it for card writing, etc as it can cope comfortably with that.Uni-ball Signo UM-153 Broad Rollerball Pen turned out to be better, and others say gelly-roll pens are good too, for adding drawing highlights.

I have the neatest writing in the world, at least that it what people say. The font you are reading now is pretty much how I write. Like a computer. These pens are the only ones that are worthy of my skill. I even feel that I should be asked to officially endorse them. Card board cut outs of me beside every shop display, with a speech bubble exclaiming them to be the best pen in the world! In all seriousness they are great to write with and the only pens I use. I have them in three colours for flips sake. Just don't ask me to lend you one of them. That includes my own kids.

9.2.2018

Nice feel, strong purple, lively colour as opposed to any other purple, violet, boring pen out there. I used them for marking as per my school marking policy. Unfortunately my school stopped buying them. Too expensive to supply then on a regular basis to over 200 teachers. They are buying now some other brand that does not do the same job in my opinion. I bought one pack myself after the ones given to me run out of ink but I guess I cannot carry on buying them. Marking is gruesome. One does need a lot of ink.

When most of the refills for this pen were £20 for 12, it seemed daft to be able to find a box of 12 pens for far less. In fact, I use the refill for my Acme pen because their rollerball refills are at least £2.42 each, and sometimes up to £5 per refill. These Pilot G2 ones work as well as the original in the Acme pen. It writes well, doesn't suddenly dry up and then kick in again. Smooth, regular flow right to the end. It just seems a terrible waste that I'm throwing the rest of the pen away for its refill.
