First a little history: I've owned and used many Nikon film SLRs and lenses for (gulp) over 35 years. I recently succumbed to the digital revolution (only about 15 years late) and got hold of a D3300 which is just excellent and has rekindled my joy in photography. Obviously (if you are reading this, you know it is obvious, right ?) I needed more than just the kit lens , and preferably something with a wider aperture. As a dinosaur film user, I was accustomed to an f1.8 50mm lens as 'standard', and this lens is the nearest to that at a reasonable price ( because the D series have smaller sensors ,the image produced by this 35mm focal length lens gives an angle of view comparable to a 50mm focal length lens on full frame or 35mm film.Bad news is you should also multiply the f number up too , so this is like a full frame 50mm f2,8 ).I snapped it up a warehouse return bargain , but once on the camera and focussing the lens emitted an awful metal on metal screech - it was returned the same day . I then found the lens on offer elsewhere , and when it arrived I neurotically listened as for the first time the focus motor did it's stuff : hmm, a bit of a whirr . No failure presaging squeal this time, but a definite whirr. Nikon call these lenses 'silent wave' type, there is a motor in each lens (rather than in the camera body) which drives the focussing as dictated by the camera electronics. The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm I have is silent when it focusses, the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200 I bought is silent too, but this smaller, simpler, non-zoom .... whirrs. Not loudly, but in a quiet environment you can clearly hear it focus. Was this another duff lens? The sound isn't loud or metal on metal this time, so I searched online and found plenty of folk who had the same experience, altho' very many did not, so it seems this may be a quality control problem. I can't quite believe I just said that ! Nikon and quality control problem in the same sentence. How times have changed. I decided to keep the lens as the problem seems minor and (at the moment) does not affect its function.Thorough field testing of the lens suggests that its function is fine, optically it outshines the kit lens , mechanically it focuses accurately and fast on the D3300 ( on a D40 I tried it on it hunts back and forth a fair bit though ) Like all of these (relatively) cheap lenses this feels less beautifully engineered and more plasticy than my old film camera lenses, but as a tool for taking photos it is fine, the plastic makes it lighter and more affordable . It's just not quite as lovely a thing ! Unusually (these things generally cost extra these days) you get a drawstring storage pouch and a decent reversible lens hood as well as the rear and front caps with this little lens, which is nice.I doubt the noise will be a practical problem, by alerting subjects that you intend to take a photo for example: the keplunk from the mirror shortly after will do that anyway .I'm in a quandry about rating this lens - feels like sacrilege to give something Nikon less than 5* - but the focus noise worries me, it suggests wear on the moving parts, and I have never, ever , come across anything Nikon which was not precision made before. On the other hand, this is an affordable lens which gives users of smaller sensor cameras a taste of enthusiast's photography : if your experience to date has solely been small aperture zoom lenses, prepare to discover a whole new aspect of making images.

I have used my 35mm 1.8 DX on a Nikon D40 since 2008. Modern versions of the D40, such as the D3400 and D3500 will no doubt correct any distortion the lenses has.But even on my old and much loved D40, this lens is an absolute cracker. The wide aperture is great for low light - if you want to take pictures in areas of natural light - zoos or museums - without the flash, then this is THE lens. It does not have VR, but even at ISO 400, pictures look great. Again, the more modern Nikon SLRs with their high performing high ISOs will make the most of this lenses light gathering to make a very discreet package for travel and street photography. The lens is robust - with a metal mount, and it is so optically simple when compared to the zooms that that I have never had a problem with even the D40's more basic focussing array. As for zooming in or out to change perspective, use your feet! It is sharp close up and at distance. Close up at wider apertures you get that lovely out of focus area that helps to isolate the subject matter that you used to get on 35mm film.It takes 52mm filters which keeps things affordable accessory wise. I use a warming polariser on mine when out doing landscapes. The hood is robust, and can be reversed on the lens for storage. The cloth bag is a nice touch. In short, every DX user should have one of these. The single focal length makes you think more about the picture and you will not be disappointed.Highly recommended. There aren't many prime lenses for Nikon's DX series - and this one replicates the old "standard" lens that came with old film SLR's. It's much lighter than a zoom, and has an aperture of f1.8, so lots of light. Absolutely thrilled with it on my ageing D200 - sharp as a tack, easy to use. The only downside I suppose is that it doesn't have depth of field markings, hence four stars for design and features, but apart from that, if you like to shoot with a prime lens, this is the way to go.

My first prime lens for my DX format camera! The wide aperture of 1.8 means you get a lovely shallow depth of field/high shutter speeds/no need for high ISO.It never leaves my camera, and as it doesn't zoom you're forced to think about your composition and framing more, takes wonderful portraits and is a great walkaround lens.If you're looking for a lens that's inexpensive, versatile and one that will help you improve your photography, I highly recommend this one!

Amazing lens to use, especially for the price. One of the first lenses I ever bought and since I did it came off rarely from my camera. When I tried to take pictures with other lenses to compare it to... the level of sharpness is amazing, honestly. It is a great lens to own for both amateur and non, plus with that 1:8 of aperture you'll get those creamy background blur that you want.Ps. Shooting in low light is not a problem anymore with this lens.

Nikon's quality at a fairly low cost! Great prime lense and definetly the one you should buy as an upgrade to your entry level DSLR's kit lense if you're on a budjet. An aperture of f\1.8 allows you to have a really shallow depth of field, and also shoot in low light conditions (good lense for astrophotography, for instance). On the negative side, the autofocus is a bit noisy and takes a little too much to focus.

Superb little lens, great for travel because of its size. I had forgotten what it's using a prime lens, being unable to zoom you have to give more thought when composing a shot. With a f1.8 aperture you can have fun with Bokeh effects, plus it is good for low light conditions. The results so far look good.Value for money too - a pity that there is not an affordable wide prime too.

I have used this lens now for events and portrait shots on my Nikon D3500 cropped sensor camera, so the focal length comes to 52mm, but the quality of the pictures are super sharp, beautiful and the colours are vibrant. There is definitely an improvement from using the kit lens. Would recommend to beginners who are looking to take the next step in their photography.

Now I have finally had the chance to use My new lens I can say that I'm very pleased with my purchase. It's very good at low light levels. Is great for portraiture. I'm looking forward to the opportunity of taking it to Birmingham city centre for a spot of street photography for which I think it will be very suitable.

Great lense meets my needs spot on, fully compatible with my Nikon D3200 and early results very pleasing.. The only negative is that the body is all plastic making it look a little cheap, but if you are looking to purchase this lense then don't let this dissuade you. Very pleased with purchase price

I only use Pro Glass on my D850 ( Nikon 24-70 f2.8 / Nikon 70-200 f2.8 ) But gave this lens a try as I was going on holiday and wanted to carry as little as possible.I was not expecting much from it but was amazed at the Clarity/Bokah this prime provided.Outstanding for the price.

This lens does not suit my requirements however the build quality, quietness, image quality and speed of focusing are all extremely impressive and I am considering this lens in other focal lengths. Even compared to G generation AF-S lenses I would say this is a superior experience.

Excellent lens after using the kit lens that came with my DSLR - I can see a drastic increase in quality. It does take a little getting used to not having the option to zoom to frame your shots. You will need to position yourself properly to get the shots you want.

Great value for money - good quality photos, even in low-light conditions. Works well for portraits and general street photography. Would recommend if you’re looking for a lens with a larger aperture than the Nikon kit lenses, but don’t want to blow your budget.
