PROS:Good side-to-side supportVibram sole with good ground feelNearly minimalist shoeGood breathabilityCONS:Not truly minimalist--has some arch support, a slight heel rise, and some extra paddingFit is small, especially in the mid footI prefer my Xeros and VivobarefootsThe New Balance Minimus is a bit of a conundrum. It’s not quite minimal, it’s more like a compromise. On the one hand, it leans toward the minimal--it is a nearly zero rise show with a very thin sole and good ground feel. On the other hand, there is a very small heel rise, it has a bit of an arch, and there is padding overlaid on the sole.THE SOLESOn the positive side, the ground feel is still quite good. The vibram sole is thin and it is truly flexible. However, my Xero Prios have much better ground feel and the Prios are outdone by the soles on any pair of my Vivobarefoot shoes.SUPPORT/PADDINGAs noted above, the Minimus shoes have a small--but significant--arch, a slight heel rise, and real padding between your foot and the sole. All around, there is less arch support, only a very modest heel rise, and significantly less padding than you would have in a ‘normal’ training shoe. Nevertheless, there is a lot more of all of the above than you would expect from a true minimalist shoe. Both the Xeros and the Vivobarefoots have none of the above, the only ‘padding’ as it were would be a thing insole (synthetic for the Xeros, cork for the Vivos). That said, all this is not a bad thing. People have different preferences in shoes and different needs for support. The Minimus trends towards the minimalist, but doesn’t quite reach the same benchmark as its competitors. These shoes DO give you good side-to-side support. The nylon mesh really works in this department. The level of support was similar to my Xero shoes. The Vivo Primus shoes didn’t do much for me for side-to-side movement. So in the end, I prefer the Minimus and the Xeros for P90X-type cardio work. When it comes to walking or running though, I prefer the Vivos. In the end, your level of comfort is really what matters here. I would suggest trying out these shoes before your buy.SIZE UP THE WIDTH--NARROW FOR A MINIMALIST SHOEThe Minimus shoes have a woven nylon upper that gives a good amount of side-to-side support. Unlike the Xeros and Vivos, though, there is not as much space in the toe box. To add to the fit issue, the Minimus narrows considerably as it reaches your mid foot.I received a 10D for review. For most athletic shoes, this is a fine fit for me. When I ordered my Xeros and Vivos they basically have a size 10 (no width options) and both fit just fine. The Minimus shoes are good enough in the toe box but are distinctly tight in the mid foot. Even so, the fabric has enough give that they are eminently wearable. The toe box is wider in Xeros and even wider in the Vivos. For me, at least, Vivos win in this category again. As I wear them more often they have relaxed a bit. That said, I am not used to having to ‘break in’ a pair of sneakers. Usually, my sneakers fit just fine right out of the box.In looking at other reviews, this seems to be a common complaint. New Balance has sizes up to a double E. If I were to order these again, I would order an E or double E.CONCLUSIONIf you are looking for truly minimalist shoes, the New Balance Minimus is not for you. If you like the minimalist idea but want just a little more arch support and padding, these are the shoes for you. As noted above, I would recommend sizing up in the width department. There are few minimal-type shoes that offer much support for the side-to-side movement that you need for heavy, P90X type, cardio workouts (see note below after review). These are a compromise but still give much more ground feel than the average athletic shoe. I feel good during and after exercise when I use them.Again, the best way to see if these shoes are good for you are to try them on. I think they remain a good option. Personally, my first choice will still be to go with the truly minimalist footwear, but these do represent a good option. Recommended.-------------NOTE: A quick note about cardio routines and minimal footwear. Please realize that I am NOT an exercise expert, so I can only speak regarding my personal experience.I now prefer to work out on a well padded floor (a thick mat) and keeping my feet in a thin-soled shoe so I have better ground feel. The added ground feel makes me much more aware of my foot position and since I have been working out like this I no longer have knee pain. When I first got pain in my knees I tried using shoes with more and more padding and support. The plan basically backfired and my knees suffered more than ever. Since switching to minimalist shoes, my knees have been much better. I now wear nothing but minimalist footwear. It’s counterintuitive, but my guess is that having too much padding on my shoe made me less aware or my foot positioning and less aware of my angle of impact. With better ground feel, I have better form and the better form leads to less injury. That said, user experience may vary. What works for me may not be ideal for you (or even the average exerciser). You will need to figure out what works best for you.

These are not retro shoes, but bring back some of the good elements from the Minimus V1-3. The fit is great, though they seemed to run smaller than was normal for my New Balance shoes. Maybe I just got an odd pair. They are very lightweight with very minimal arch support. The Minimus line has progressed from the 'no support naked running shoe' craze, into one that kept all the good elements of that and added a little bit of support where needed. It still has a very thin soul and a very slight drop from heel to toe, it isn't a true zero. So in the end you get a pretty great all around training shoe. One you can lift in and then go put in a good amount of miles on the track, road or trail.

I've had 2 other generations of the New Balance minmal running shoes, the 10V1 trail and the old, old M730GO1. The M730 is still my favorite, though these are a close 2nd. I did have to go up to a size 10D from a 9.5D - on the 10V1 I ended up with a 9.5 wide. Footbed is not as wide as the M730, but forgiving, overall length is where it's a touch smaller than either. One nice update is the look - these appear a little more casual and a little less athletic than the prior generation, making them more suitable to wearing daily rather than for just running, etc.

These shoes are great, very light, not much sole to weigh you down. They are flexible and good for running too if you don't need too much cushion, they are called minimus for a reason. You definitely need to get the width correct with this shoe as it fits snugly. The price is fantastic so I recommend this if you get your correct width/size.

At 67 with significant arthritis in both knees I have switched to flat shoes (0% drop) for running and walking over the past several years. Better foot strike promotes better posture and impact distribution with no pain. Most experts, including my knee Doctor, advise cushoned footware but this does not seem to be the case for me.

After working out in running shoes for several years. I have to say these shoes are a terrific replacement. With low footbed, I am now comfortable in squats and cleans. I am also able to get my feet in and out of rowing stirrups quickly and efficiently. They have made a positive difference in my HIIT gym routine.

These shoes are fantastic. I wear them for CrossFit. Soooo comfortable! Other reviews say the are very narrow. I guess if you have super wide feet these could give you an issue. If your feet are normal width then give these a try. I will definitely purchase again!

This is my second purchase of the New Balance Minimus shoes. They are the perfect gym/weight lifting shoe for me. I don't need any support other than my feet being flat on the floor while heavy squating, deadlifting, etc. Excellent quality & wear.

Love the shoe. Nice mix between full barefoot and a conventional runner. The arch supports can be a little firm but I like them. Use it for the gym and an everyday walk around and running so pretty much everything. Will definitely buy again.

I have wider feet and generally am happy with New Balance, but these seem thinner than my last pair of minimus of the previous model. Overall they seem stronger and give more support as the sides are more reinforced.

Excellent shoes trainer. Super comfortable and true to size. Order regular width and fit was perfect for me. Plenty of toe box room. Highly recommend way better than the last model. No more burrito tongue is a plus.

Excellent workout shoe for gym, weights, sled, bands, ladders, jump rope and steel mace workouts. Lightweight, too, which makes it easier for packing. Strong grip to keep steady on the ground. Would buy again.

Great cross training shoe. Offers stability for heavy lifting, enough flexibility to allow for more HITT oriented workouts and short runs, and they’re very comfortable.Do order at least a half size up though.

28.7.2019

The shoes are great a little snugger than I'm use to for a size 13 however still a great shoe. I have stuffed it with socks when not in use and that has helped a 14 would be way to big.

Great workout shoes. Note: these run small on purpose (they're meant to fit snugly) and New Balance says to go a half size up from what you would normally wear in New Balance shoes.
