I hesitated buying this bottle due to comments about needing at least two hands to close the lid, plus a lot of force. Well, my experience is very different. It takes minimal force to close the lid - so little that I dislike using the word 'force' in that phrase. And I can do it one-handed, with ease. It's a piece of cake. One thing I like is that when the lid is open and you take a sip, the lid stays open - it does not fall back under gravity and rest on your face.Incidentally, you drink from a spout which is hidden beneath the broad part of the lid, in the 9 o'clock position in the Amazon photo. You can make out the metal clip securing the lid in the 9 o'clock position. My previous bottle was a squeezy one with a nipple on it (pull the nipple & suck to drink). When I wanted a fast flow, I'd squeeze the bottle too. Therefore when looking for a new bottle I thought a prerequisite was one that I could squeeze. That isn't true with the design of a bottle like the Nalgene OTF - the spout is so big that water flows freely under gravity and far faster than a bottle with a nipple while being squeezed. So much so that I have to consciously drink slower out of the OTF otherwise I empty the bottle faster.I considered buying a wide-neck Nalgene bottle (i.e. wide at the drinking point). I am pleased I didn't as reviewers said that the wide neck means that it is easy to spill the contents while drinking, all down your neck. As the OTF has a wide neck underneath the screw-on cap, you can still insert ice cubes. My previous bottle would sometimes leak. This one never has and I love the security of knowing that it never should. It's a great bottle.***Edit 26/6/12: I subsequently had a problem with the lid jamming and have discovered the reason. It's actually a design feature, not a quality control issue.I mistakenly thought that the closing mechanism was the wire clip. Actually, that's a backup. The primary mechanism is a simple click-to-close one. Just push the lid down and it clicks closed (you have to push down quite hard, which is why it took six months' almost daily use for it to click down accidentally & lock closed). Simply press the button to release (the clip is mounted around this button).Presumably the idea is that you only use the wire clip as a backup closing mechanism, e.g. when transporting the bottle.Having two closing mechanisms means that this bottle is even better than I thought it was - it's unlikely to leak. This means that others' comments that it takes a lot of force to close the lid is relatively accurate (it takes a fair amount of force, not an inordinate one) - but if you secure it using the clip mechanism only, it takes minimal force.Incidentally, I put my bottle in my bag, full, upside down by mistake, using the clip closing mechanism only, and it did not leak. And six months after buying it, with virtually daily use, not once has it leaked.I have seen so many people reusing supermarket water bottles (i.e. ones that they sell water in). It's not recommended, apparently, because of the type of plastic used for the bottle. I gather they are not intended for multiple use because of the risk of chemicals in the plastic seeping into the water. If I may suggest, please don't reuse them repeatedly for your children's packed lunches. I mean, for water that's sold at 50p a bottle, would you use a high quality plastic like a Nalgene bottle or cheap plastic that meets regulatory standards? Maybe the latter's OK but I wouldn't risk it.This review has more updates than Windows...

This is the second one of these bottles I've bought (the first was from Target, and I liked it enough to get a second one here on Amazon). This one has a brick-red lid and a smoke-colored bottle with the truck picture.Pros:--BPA-free--leak-proof when you have it latched properly--a metal clip thing that makes sure the spout doesn't pop open in transit--kid-friendly (my 6-year-old can work the latch and the pop-open drinking lid)--durable--it can be dropped and doesn't break--a wide mouth for putting in ice and for washing--dishwasher top-rack safe (I've been washing my other one, a blue one, for the last three months in the dishwasher, top rack, with no noticeable change in color, texture of lid's seal,or function)--fits in standard cupholdersCon:It comes with a large BPA-Free sticker plastered on one side with the Glue from Hell. I pulled off the sticker and then tried Fantastik, vinegar, toothpaste, and a Scotch-brite scrub sponge, and none of it would get the gummy residue off. Finally I tried Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Liquid Hand Soap, Lavender scent, and that got it off with scrubbing with the rough side of the Scotch-brite sponge.I'm pleased with the product and quality and would buy one again (and have).***** Update on June 16, 2013: No more glue from hell!I just bought four more of these bottles (two in the red truck pattern and two in the blue shark pattern), and all of them had labels that peeled right off, no residue or difficulty at all. One of my older bottles is still in use, with a year of dishwasher use, and no problems at all with it. The other of my older bottles got ruined because it was left sealed and partially full too long and mold grew inside the flip-top lid.

I like this bottle fairly well. However it is not our first go-to bottle when we are on the go. Of the cheaper, healthy bottles, it is probably our 2nd favorite. Crocodile Creek is our #1, though it is often quite a bit more expensive.PRO:- Size - 12 ounces is a nice, in-between size.- No spill, IF you have it secured- Body has large top, which makes cleaning soooo much easier. No need for a bottle brush. Of course, that makes it more clunky, which I also find a negative (see below)CON:- Fat - It's fatter than a lot of other bottles. As a result, it isn't as easy to tuck into a purse or picnic pack. I would prefer that it was taller and thinner.- Clunky - The top makes up about 1/3 of the height of the bottle. Not terribly efficient use of space. The flip closure could easily have been designed in a way to take up considerably less room. For the size of the bottle vs the quantity it holds, it's not a great ratio.- Closure - The only way to truly close it and also keep it from leaking is a two-fold process. Close the lid, then flip the metal ring up and over the nub on the top. Not so easy for a little one and seems unnecessarily complicated.Note:- The drinking hole is larger than most. It's a hole/spout that is about the diameter of a nickle. Nice, because you can get it nice and clean. It also makes it easier to get a nice flow of liquid when you are drinking. It may be a downfall for some using it with smaller children, as it will make it easier to spill, etc.

Just what we were looking for! After my wife and I tried numerous kid-brand name water containers for our kids, we realized that cheaper bottles brought us mold issues, leak issues and left us frustrated. We finally decided to "splurged" and spend a little more and low and behold, the investment was well worth it!We purchased the Hoot and the Green Cap bottles and after a few months of use, there have been no mold issues and not one leak has occurred. The size is perfect for our 5 and 3 year old to handle and they both like the look so they end up drinking more water to stay hydrated throughout the day. They are easy to open as even our 3 year old (who was not even 2.5 when he began using it)opens the bottle by pushing a button on the cap with ease. The bottles have been dropped from up to counter-high heights and if you use the metal latch on the cap the cap will stay shut. The kids like to close the metal latch every time so even after drops, there have been no spills. I can however see the cap opening if dropped without latching the metal piece.Overall we are very happy with the product and highly recommend it for any parent who is looking for a spill-proof (remember to latch the metal piece if putting it on the counter!) and easy to clean cup that doesn't mold with proper care.

This bottle has 2 closing mechanisms - a push button, and a backup metal clip. It does not leak.I have made a video review of the adult version of this bottle (it is just bigger) - it shows how the lid works so you may wish to take a look. It is here: Nalgene 'Everyday OTF' bottle 0,7 L, blueIt has no plastic taste. For a long time I avoided plastic bottles because I believed that all plastic bottles make the contents taste of plastic. One advantage of the narrow-neck OTF over a wide neck Nalgene bottle is that I once knocked the OTF over. I was surprised how little of the contents I spilt - it simply can't pour out very quickly because the neck isn't very large (approximately 2.5 cm in diameter).May I suggest that you don't reuse plastic supermarket water bottles for your kids'packed lunches. It's not recommended because of the type of plastic used for the bottle. Supermarket bottles are, apparently, not intended for anything more than one use. I have no idea if the health scares are true - I just believe that an expensive bottle is more likely to be safer than a 50p one. This bottle is, critically, BPA free.I really like this bottle.

I bought 3 of these for my kids to use for school.Pros- only 2 parts, no straw inside nor any valves which are tedious to clean, water flows out quickly for drinking from the wide opening which also makes cleaning it much easier, the metal ring to lock it is still working after 2 years of daily school use which I thought might break easily.Cons- I wish it came in a smaller size( like 2-3 ounces smaller/narrower bottle) because my kids don't drink this much water during the day at school so i end up throwing out the remaining water at the end of the day plus a narrower/smaller bottle would fit better in the side pockets of their Pottery Barn Kids backpacks. This type of bottle is the only kind I use for myself when exercising(I have 2 made by Thermos) because of the easy pour into my mouth opening unlike Camelbacks. I don't like drinking out of stainless steel bottles because I can't see inside and water tastes weird. Therefore, I would only buy these Nalgene water bottles for my kids if they every lose or break their current ones because of this type of opening and they're plastic.

We love Nalgene products! The snap top lids are all one piece, everything is dishwasher safe and we've had some for a year or more with regular washing + the heated dry and all the designs are still intact. The lid - when snapped does not leak, but is sometimes a little hard for our 6 year old to snap (some seem to line up better than others). Our 2 year old can drink out of it but can't latch it (and often spills the drink trying so we use these for the older kid). The metal latch is a nice touch for when you're carrying it or putting it in a bag, but the 6 year old can't undo that part on her own. The cups have held up well to wear and tear by our kids, and I love that I can interchange any lid with any bottle (sippy cups, snap top, and screw top lids all the same size and thread, even the big drinking bottles and the quart sizes). I keep going back and ordering more and replacing all our other kid cups.

After my child went though several water bottles that have a bite valve and straw, we decided to try this one. In each of the prior bottles, the bite valve broke, and the straw was difficult to clean. We've had this water bottle for about 6 months now, and unlike the prior ones, this one is built to last. It is also easy to clean. However, two drawbacks to be aware of (and neither is really major) is that i) younger children (perhaps under 5) may have trouble securely closing the top, and ii) the top, when opened, is in a slightly annoying position when drinking. With this said, I'd still re-order this if we were to lose the current water bottle. It is also a nice feature that that the spout from which you drink remains protected (and clean), unlike many other water bottles for which the spout is exposed. The bottle is also very easy to clean (aided by the fact it doesn't have a bite valve or straw).

Bought this for my very active 4 year old who loves it. It's easy for him to carry (by the handle) and he takes it everywhere. The volume is a good size for him so we don't have to refill to often but not too much so that it's too heavy. The OTF top has an opening just small enough for his mouth and beveled to allow for drinking while on the move (which he always is) with minimal spilling. It can also be opened using one hand which is great for my busy body. The top is hard to snap for him so he uses the metal locking latch to close. We haven't had any issues with leaks when the lid is closed. The plastic bottle did eventually crack after a year of dropping it several times a week. But I felt like we got our money's worth because he was able to stay hydrated during the hot and humid months and his school does not have air conditioning. And we got another one to replace it.

Finally a good, but not perfect, leak-proof water bottle for my three year old. One star fell off the rating due to two design oversights:1) The depressions on the side of the bottle, I believe, are on the wrong side. You can't really use them to hold the bottle for more support. If they were rotated 90 degrees it would allow my child to use her thumb and index finger to hold the bottle with more confidence. Not a huge deal but.. something I noticed.2) The metal locking ring is a bit too hard to open. The good thing is that there are two closing mechanisms.. one that requires you to press down with a click and the other is the locking ring.I give the bottle to my daughter with the ring unlocked and luckily the initial closing mechanism is fine to keep it closed during her day in pre-school.It's easy to clean also, but then again we use it only for water.

I bought two of these a few years ago, one for each of my kids to take their drinks to school in their lunch each day. They hold a decent amount (more than most juice boxes) but are small enough to fit in a lunch box and don't have those annoying straws that are a pain to take apart, wash, dry, and put back together. After school the kids open and unscrew the lids and put the bottle and lid right in the dishwasher to be ready for the next morning. I want them to have real juice, not a "juice drink" and 100% juice boxes are fairly expensive. This way I can buy juice by the jug which results in plenty of savings to quickly make up for the cost of the bottle and results in a lot less waste. After about 2.5 years of daily use one of the lids wasn't sealing as well but these have worked out so well that I bought another just like it to replace it.

This water bottle fit perfectly in my child's lunch bag (7.25 inches tall x 3 inches around). When closed properly we have had no leaks. It is a little hard to close because the rubber seal that prevents the leaks requires you to push down with more pressure than a child may be used to, and there is not a real audible "click" to know it's snapped shut. The latch is a small piece of plastic that looks like it could wear out over time, but there is also a wire bail to help secure the lid tight. A 5 year old can manage closing the lid but a 3 year old can not. Much easier to clean than a bottle with a straw. Also very durable with no cracks or leaks after lots of drops.I took off one star because I think the latch should have been made with a better "snap" for kids to know they've gotten closed it tight. Overall I'm very happy with the bottle.

My husband gets mad at me because I keep buying water bottles for our kid. That's because all of the water bottles I've seen out there has some sort of flaw. Some leak, some are too hard to open for the child. I can't buy the glass ones because I'm afraid my 6-year-old would drop it. I like to be able to see through the bottle to know the height of the liquid so I can't buy the Kanteen ones. I feel this newly designed bottle from Nalgene ends that search. The screw-on top makes it easy for parents to pour the liquid into the bottle, and the child does not have to unscrew the bottle to drink out of it. The child just has to push the button and the lid flips open. The lid also snaps close, and there is a handy metal lock to ensure closure. Nalgene really put some thought into this design. Well done Nalgene!

I bought this leakproof bottle to send with my 4-year-old son's lunch for preschool. It fits nicely in his lunchbox. He has been using it for the last few days, and it works great. He can easily flip down the metal ring and push the button to open the lid and drink. He has no trouble pushing the lid shut and clipping it with the ring, which then allows him to carry it by the lid's "loop." The only slight flaw is that when the bottle is empty and the lid is flipped open, the bottle is a bit top heavy and tips. But if the bottle is empty, then it's not really a problem, I guess! I can see this lasting much longer than my daughter's CamelBak Kid's bottle, which will need a one-piece straw replacement for half the cost of the bottle. This Nalgene will not need any replacement anything, which I really like.
