I use my 96 oz. Nalgene Cantenes to make ice blocks for my very high quality family sized soft-sided cooler that I purchased as a member of a well-known national outdoor product co-op. Standard coolers are bulky to store vs. my cooler which collapses nicely when not in use. While you can freeze the cantenes with the water at the "fill line", they seem to work better if you have a bit less in them, esp. if you want them to be largely flat so no room is wasted in the cooler (be sure to freeze them on their sides). They've effectively lasted for 4 day/3 night camping trips in mid 70's weather in my soft-sided cooler (with care taken to keep it out of the sun),but if it's really hot out or if I go on longer camping trips I need more ice. I purchase a bag of ice, give it a few good whacks with my rubber mallet and then put large chunks into the cantenes since putting a bag of ice in a soft-sided cooler would be a disaster. I'd never be able to use a soft-sided cooler for a week long camping trip if I didn't have these wide mouth cantenes to use in this manner. Not necessarily customary use of the product, but it works well for my purposes.Drying them out takes quite some time though, but that's something that happens with any product of this type. The method I use is to take a large beer mug, invert some plastic kitchen utensil spoons in them and then put the cantenes on them. It takes a few days to dry, but this is definitely a product you want completely bone dry before storing.

I love this bottle. I'm a thirsty guy, work in the desert, and drink at least a gallon of water a day. My office does not have a reliable source of clean water, so I was lugging gallon jugs in a cloth grocery bag, my 100oz insulated bucket full of ice in my hand, and all my other gear in a backpack. It was a handful of ugly BPA laden plastics. Then I found this bottle.I can stuff these BPA free bottles in my backpack, and now I have one less bag to carry. When I'm done, it rolls up really nice. What really makes me happy, though, is that it's American Made, and Nalgene stands behind their products. The description says it is guaranteed leakproof. After two months of use, mine leaked from a corner, but luckily it was in the waterproof compartment of my backpack (which also leaked, but that's another story). I called Nalgene, and they offered to send me a replacement fairly easily. The new one is holding up so far, and once my backpack replacement arrives (another standup American company), my day to day hydration will once again be a breeze. So if you're thirsty, need a flexible hydration device, and are an American...buy this bottle and support American businesses.

I have been using these Nalgene Canteens for years. I like it because it has a small footprint taking up only the space that the water takes, and compressing to a small size as it empties. It has a lid that is foolproof - never leaks. I also like the study handle making it easy to pick up & carry.I work outside & carry my drinking water with me. Although I use this as my main source of water when I'm outside, I also carry a smaller water bottle or sometimes a hydration pack such as Platypus that I refill from this large capacity Nalgene Canteen. When I take it to work or on a dayhike, I fill the lower quarter of the canteen with water and freeze it. Then I fill it up with water, slip it into my daypack, and have cool water all day!I also take this canteen on backpack & kayak expeditions. On a backpack, it's nice because it conforms into the space you put it into & you can carry 2 empties to fill when you're in camp but then collapse the next day. On a kayak, it lies flat on the bottom of the boat & that keeps it cooler as it's next to the water. Another big factor is this canteen doesn't add any taste to the water.

Any of you who have followed my reviews of various water bottles either here on Amazon or on my website, Yackman.com, know how frustrated I have been trying to find the perfect water carrier for camping in my sea kayak. This Nalgene bottle may be as close to perfect as I will get. First, like the Platypus bottles I have been using, it is made of a tough plastic that leaves no bad taste in the water. More importantly, it has that familiar Nalgene wide mouth screw top. This makes both filling and using the bottle easy. More importantly, and this is where the Nalgene has a big advantage over the Platypus bottle, it is much easier to clean and dry out after use. The Nalgene's size is right for stowing in a sea kayak hatch. At 96 oz. (3/4 gallon) they even fit in my day hatch and easily take the curve of the hull, saving space, while some hard water containers do not. I still use the smaller 70 ounce Platypus bags as well. They take up even less room than the Nalgenes. On a recent five day trip in the Everglades I packed three of the Nalgenes and five of the Platypus bags.

2010/11/12/15 - Big Bend, 2010/11/12/19 - Grand Canyon, 2017 - Yellowstone, 2017 - Sawtooth Mountains, 2012/13/14 - Guadalupe Mountains, 2011/13 - Rocky Mountain National Park.Has absolutely worked every time, thus saving my life all the time. An must for Big Bend & Guadalupe Mountains where you carry all your water. The wide mouth opening makes it easy to fill from waterfalls & creeks. The ergonomics make it easy to pour into another container. When it's empty, it's day 3-4, you are tired from 30-40 rugged miles at 7-8-12,000 feet & it's time to go back to civilization...it is very light weight (2 ounces) and smashes down small. Also great for sunny day photo/video shoots. With the center hook on my tripod,I hang the bladder to add weight, then drink or rinse off after the hot day of shooting.I purchased a 3rd Wide Mouth Cantene for when I am not hiking solo.

As long as you are careful about the way you fold and pack this, it is a wonderful addition to your backpacking or camping setup. I weighed it some time back, and I think it was under 2 ounces, maybe it was 2 point something. At any rate, the widemouth opening works with most backpacking filters (I use the MSR Miniworks and the MSR Hyperflow), along with a gazillion other widemouth attachments like lids, spouts, etc. I pack it empty, then fill it up when I make camp, giving me enough water to make dinner, hydrate back up while in camp, and then make breakfast the next morning. Most of the negative reviews I've seen centered around it leaking where the bag meets the opening.I believe that improper folding and packing accelerates the problem, but I've been using mine for several years, and I would happily replace it with the same thing when it starts to leak.

Nalgene canteens are perfect for travel. We fill them up with the filtered water at home and take them on the road with us. We use them up before we end up buying bottled water at our destination. This is especially great if we are driving all day and get to a hotel late. We then at least have lots of good water to drink and use to make coffee in the morning, if needed. These containers hold a lot and don’t take up a ton of space. They are then obviously really small and compact once you are done using them. We have two and use them on all of our trips. We have never put alcoholic beverages in them for a trip be we have friends who have. They work great, but you’ll need to use them exclusively for one type of alcohol in the future. You don’t want gin flavored water or gin flavored vodka.Excellent price and shipping on Amazon!

Bottom Line: Terrific for what I want in a backpack camping large capacity water container. Selected this over a Platypus Water Tank because simpler is better - the Platypus large zip closure is an additional place to leak. Maybe not now, but maybe later. The Nalgene is great.Pros (for me):1. Stands upright when full / partly full2. Collapses pretty small when empty3. Wide mouth easy to fill and dispense4. Easy to pour using grommet hole5. Tough and doesn't leak (yet)6. Cap tethered to cantene - can't lose it7. Compatible with 3rd-party water filter systems8. Good priceCons1. Some interior nooks and crannies are more difficult to dry out than a typical rigid container2.Difficult to drink directly from mouth (I personally don't care - who drinks directly from a 3 liter container?)

First off, accurate specs are hard to come by on the 96 oz. bottle. Mine weighs in at exactly 2.9 ounces. For comparison, a conventional 1 quart (32 oz) Nalgene bottle weighs 6.2 ounces. So this bottle carries 3 times the water for less than half the weight. Impressive. So far, I have found these bags to be tough and reliable. I love the wide mouth setup and the fact that the bottle collapses as needed. The 96 ounce size is probably overkill for the average hiker, but I like having the capability to carry a large quantity of water without having to carry a heavy container. It's also handy for filling up in the evenings for camp use. At some point I'll probably pick up the 48 oz. bottle too,for shorter excursions. At any rate, it's a good product. Recommended.

If I didn't love Platypus Soft Bottles so much, I would probably love this one. This bottle is great because the wide mouth allows you to place ice in it, refill it with water at amusement parks and is very easy to clean with a brush. My purpose in getting soft bottles, though is to have a foldable bottle I can stow away when we are done drinking the water, an impossibility with our stainless steel water bottles. The wide mouth bottle, in spite of its benefits, makes it difficult to compactly fold this bottle after use. I find myself exercising extra care not to break the wide mouth when folding and storing it. We are keeping this bottle for all its benefit. But our go to bottles will continue to be the compact Platypus Soft Bottle.

For holding water on a hike, I use Platypus bottles. They're as light as can be, and when empty they fold down to almost nothing. This Nalgene bottle can't do that because of the wide lid, but the wide lid is why I bought it. It's the bottle I use to scoop up water from streams while backpacking. I put a piece of cheesecloth over the mouth and can fill the bottle by drawing it through even a shallow stream. That can't be done with the small-mouthed Platypus bottles. If I'm hiking where I expect to find plenty of water deeper than, say, a foot, I leave the Nalgene behind and just take the Platypus bottles, which can be filled if held vertically in the water.

I use this for my overnight backpacking trips and it has served me very well. It holds enough water to stay hydrated and cook a few freeze dried meals with enough leftover for the inevitable spills and unprepared friends. Completely full it adds approximately 6 pounds to my backpack, but I gladly pay the price because I don't have to worry about finding a water source, boiling, and filtering. Needless to say I am not into ultralight hiking. From my experience it is almost completely indestructible and the fact that it's not rigid makes it very easy to pack in tight spaces. It folds down very small when empty and is very easy to clean when the trip is over.

I have had both the 48 and 96 oz canteens for just over a year. The 96 has been babied, the 48 was abused. I have filled and frozen both to use as ice packs, and they did well as long as you use the fill line. The 48 oz finally sprung a dripping leak (about 1 drip per second) after I lent it to a friend and she clipped it to her pack on the way down a rock scramble. It was abraded by some rock, which led to the leak. I had previously dropped it from chest height several times, and it didn't break. That said, these are super light solutions to carry large quantities of water when you need it, and they collapse to be small and light when not needed.

The best of two worlds, it has a wide mouth like the original nalgene, but once emptied it folds easily and with a better carabiner. I tried it to melt snow and no problem using boiling water, moreover, being soft is the perfect glove for the high mountain. It has not been punctured (which was my main concern) with the murras or shin, but still I take care of it. The only but is that it does not have to measure volume such as rigid and the paint goes easy, beyond that it is perfect and does not leave bruises when carried hanging from the backpack or even fits in the hardshell pocket to melt snow on the way to the top

From the makers of the most popular hiking water bottles, this collapsible 3 liter canteen weighs close to nothing at all, and has the same cap/threads as the wide-mouth hard-sided bottles so screws right onto my First Need Water Filter. It is very durable. The first one I bought many years ago and it stood up to ALOT of use before finally springing a leak on a seam. I expect that the replacement one I bought will serve me well. It's a small but satisfying plus to be able to filter this much water at one time when you plan on staying longer than one day at a given campsite when backpacking.
