PerformanceWhile I have yet to try any other Skylake based motherboards, I was still quite pleased with the performance on offer here. The MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon comes with loads of features to help user’s get the most from the board. Things such as the DDR4 Boost, Audio Boost 3 and Gaming Lan are must have essentials for any gamer. Overclocking was also nice and straightforward and a decent amount of extra performance was gained as we can see in the benchmarks when overclocking the 6700K. The MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon does a great job at grabbing that extra bit of performance from the CPU and utilizing it to give the end-user the best experience possible.DesignThere is no denying thatthis board is designed to be stylish while remaining elegant and offer a look that just says it performs well. The overall black theme is great and will go with most builds and the Carbon fibre on the heatsinks is a great touch. The inclusion of the RGB LEDs will further allow users to not only customize their build but will also allow them to match the colour scheme of the rest of their components in a neat and fun way. One thing I would have liked to of seen though is the inclusion of RGB LEDs for the audio trace, leaving it only being able to have red LEDs is quite a bit disappointing. MSI have also gone the extra mile to help protect the board and give as much longevity as possible. Reinforced PCIe expansion slots and the overall use of Military grade 5 components help showcase that this is not just another cheap board, but one you can have faith in.ValueOne of the areas where this board shines very brightly, the value. Coming it at around £121 at the time of review, this board offers some amazing features and performance for the price. The raw performance and overclock ability this board has to offer are amazing at this price point and it will surely be hard to find anything that will best this within the same price range. The MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon will be a great start to any Skylake build and is surely worth a look, especially if you are a bit budget conscious. Again, for the price you are getting a great performing board with some amazing features and software and the inclusion of the RGB LEDs will surely help to persuade some users into making the purchase.Disclaimer: I was sent this product for review and it was returned after testing.

I'd been looking into a new build for a few months and quickly decided on the Z170 Chipset but didn't know which board to choose. I was going to go with the MSI Krait initially but ended up choosing this one due to it having everything I wanted with some extras for future proofing but also because it looked slick. The quality and finish of the board is outstanding. It has a really cool matt black finish to the PCB that makes it look like a high end board and the heatsinks on key components have a cool carbon fibre effect to them as well.I do have issues with other aesthetics however. I wanted the black/white look so I could change the theme of my machine via RGB lighting. There's a really cool strip at the front of the board that allows for a myriad of colour schemes including a rainbow one and can even flash in time with your music. But there are a number of area's on the board (DIMM slots, Audio Chips, I/O header) where you can't customise it. It's just red, all the time. Which for me is annoying because it takes some of the customisation control away.Another point is that some of the higher end boards have some really sleek I/O shielding which really finishes off the design. I just feel like that addition would have been really good on this.In terms of hardware, this board has everything I need and works well for me. I'm hoping to make use of the m.2 slot in future. The SATA ports in my opinion are well placed though some people are not fond of the front ports being mounted at a 90degree angle, This works for me as I can direct the cables straight into the management holes.I'm yet to make use of the USB-C connector but I'm sure this will become useful in future. The system fan headers on the board are well placed as well. It's still early days but I definitely made the right decision with this board. It's got a lot of options at a good price!

My biggest gripe with this board wasn't the boards faut at all, but Intel's decision to remove usb support for Windows 7, if your installing 8 or above you'll be fine, but for W7 you will need an optical drive, which I haven't owned for years. The board looks great, as an ITX mini, it is ideal for portable gaming rigs, or even as a compact serving. The one issue I have is the location of the M.2 drive slot, being underneath means it has little or no cooling and as many M.2 chips get hot, especially if your running your OS off one, as I am, it will get a lot of use. I cannot think of a solution to this and will adjust my review of this creates any issue in the future. If I was gong to be very pickyI would also mention the short distance between WiFi antennas limiting the direction they can be pointed in, but that is a very minor point. Also be aware there is no DVI port, only HDMI and Display port. All in all, the Z170I is a pretty good board, cool design and includes some good features like Bluetooth and external clear CMOS botton.

bought this because my asus z170-a went pop and they didn't have any in stock to replace it. man i'm so glad it was out of stock! this board is alot nicer to look at love the carbon highlights on the heat sinks and the RGB is a nice touch too! after playing around overclocking my i5 6600k i was able to get the same overclock of 4.7Gz with 0.05v less then the asus board, i had no problem with turning on xmp memory profile and the uefi is alot nicer looking and better to use then the asus one. the only down side i have found is that the cpu fan headers need to be pwm (4pin) so they can speed up and slow down. 3pin dc fans just run full all the time and are not effected when you change settings in the uefi.but that is easy sorted with pwm fans. there are 6 sata port and a sata express port plus m.2 so loads of options for storage and overall great build quality.

A very good mini itx motherboard. Has a wide selection of ports and the colour scheme looks great. The bios is first class as well, makes changing the settings a breeze. The manual was a bit on the small side. It also doesn't seem to support installation of Windows via usb (even through the usb 2.0 ports) which is a bit of a pain. I had issues of Windows being unable to locate the correct drivers on my usb boot drive before installing so had to purchase a cheap internal DVD drive for that. The placement of ports is good and posed no issues during the build. You will need a splitter cable if you plan on having more than one case fan though, but it's a small board so I can't complain. The addition of the m.2 slot on the rear of the board is a good future proofing option. For an itx skylake build I would recommend this.

I got this Motherboard in October 2015 and I have been super happy with the product. It looks as amazing as it does in the pictures and just has a solid, well built feel to it. It is aesthetically pleasing and I have an MSI GTX970 as well so alltogether looks brilliant inside my NZXT Noctus 450. (Pictures Given). The build was my first and the only issue I had was how to setup the M_2 SSD and which SATA ports to use for my HDD and standar 2.5" SSD, which on consulting the manual was made very clear. The BIOS provided is robust and super simple for over clocking. The MOBO even tells you the temps using the LED whilst you have it on to which is useful when doing OC to make sure your not frying anything!I would say this board is worth paying the extra for it as all round it is a solid product.

Pros- Fantastic BIOS- Looks the business, and the red lights in the Ethernet ports look dead cool too.- Very nice build- Masses of features in a tiny package.- The sound quality is really good.- The Intel 802.11ac and 2x antennas is a very nice touch.- A really good deal for a gaming/overclocking mobo if you need/want its features.Cons- The M.2 slot on the bottom only officially supports the shorter less common standard of M.2 drives.Overall i do highly recommend this if you want a quality ITX board for a performance/overclocking build. It seems to be of very high quality, the BIOS is insanely good and if you intend to use it for its intended purpose it comes highly recommended.

This was the first msi product i have ever owned and it will surely not be the last the mother board comes equipped with all the features you will ever need features like audio boost, led, recent connection ports like usb 3.o and usb 3.1 with also multiple USB headers,ddr4 boost,sli/cross fire and also an excellent overclocker due to its excellent powerphase design, and also has a lot of software features like gaming app which helps you to customize things like your led, mouse, keyboard, screen and overclocking abilities and also nahimic audio which lets you further customize your sound experience. overall i think this motherboard excellent and is sure not to disappoint you.

25.11.2016

Pros:- Easy to use interface (easy and advanced modes)- Range of overclocking utilities for both your CPU and RAM- Striking black and white aestheticsCons:- Lack of customisable LEDs (if that's your thing).- Very strange size - the board is short of full ATX, but much larger than Mini - it will only fit in ATX. This means there is no direct support at the outer edge, increasing the risk of damaging the board when installing RAMRecommended?- Providing the current price point, I can recommend this board as I have had no issues whatsoeverMet expectations?- The board does what is asked of it and more. I cannot complain.

Great motherboard however the top pcie slot could have been placed slightly lower... some people use big coolers, I know I do and my GPU will not fit into the top pcie slot. this doesn't slow my performance, but my GTX 980TI gets to around 80 degrees when I benchmark on valley. In terms of gaming temps, GTAV hits 80-81C after 40 ish mins as the fans don't have enough space to pull in much air. I have 7 120mm fans in the case, front 3 pull air in, top 3 pull it out, and rear exhausts. I've seen other people getting 60-70C with this card. so I'm quite annoyed. I would rather be in the high 70's at max. but 80 is tedious.

Worked on first post. Blisteringly fast. Take care with DIMM placement (you always need to look at that). Also take care of SATA placement as you may not be able to use port 1 and 2 if you use the m2 slot. There's a table showing config options in the manual. Didn't try auto OC. 6700k runs fast enough as is right now. Hassle free build and board- would recommend.vs rog hero- better connectivity, probably power regulation, no back armour (gimmick IMO). Loss of resale value. Supposed better components in Asus.Giga gaming- google 'z170 audio problems gigabyte'

Good motherboard.Has been used for gaming and for mining cryptocurrencies and works well.Wouldn't really fault it with anything other than the price which you pay for it due to being a "premium" motherboard with LEDs on it. Not really necessary but hey, it looks cool.Bios features are quite extensive and let you customise the settings really well.Quite simple to assemble pc and has caused no problems this far.

Excellent motherboard. There are plenty of expansion slots which greatly enhance upgrade options. If you have a windowed case the motherboard is also aesthetically pleasing. As with most MSI products, the motherboard comes with plenty of additional software. Some are more useful than others. I recommend only installing the essential drivers and use the bios menu for overclocking.

Again, these are early days having only been in use for about two weeks. I wanted a PC with good graphics capability and enough power to drive a 4K monitor eventually. I did not want an absolute gaming machine so I opted for the M3 which would be a step up from an ordinary business PC.I shall report back in a year, or so, if there is anything (good or bad) to add.

bit let down by the lights. The RGB strip on the side is....ok, the LEDs themselves aren't very bright, even in a dark room with my light off the lights on my graphics are brighter (an gigabyte G1 gaming 1070), there is some backlighting on the motherboard itself, which are red, and unfortunately cannot be changed. Other than that it's nice though.
