I came to this razor after using the Wilkinson Sword Classic DE for a month or so (the chrome one, not the "plastic fantastic"), and a long line of cartridge razors for thirty-odd years prior to that. The Merkur 23C is one of the cheaper options among the mid-priced mild DE razors offered by Edwin Jagger, Muhle and indeed Merkur. I agonised over the choices available, pouring over every review I could find. In the end my desire for a longer handle and 3-piece design (separate handle, base plate and cap) together with its huge popularity swung things in favour of the 23C.Blade loading is easy and I haven't experienced any alignment problems with the blades I've used (Shark, Derby, Wilkinson,Silver Star). I haven't missed the twist-to-open (TTO) convenience of the Wilkinson at all. Another thing I haven't missed is the neck irritation that I consistently experienced with cartridges and even the Wilkinson; that was gone with my first shave with the Merkur. Previously I'd assumed that my skin was sensitive and I needed smoother blades like the Shark and Derby Extra, but in the Merkur sharper just means more efficient and irritation is never a problem. Part of this is down to the head design, but I think the Merkur's long, slender handle plays its part too; it encourages a delicate, balanced grip which results in precise control. The knurling on the handle prevents slippage even with soapy fingers.Good points:- Very forgiving; you have to get really sloppy to cut yourself with this razor.- The long slender grippy handle and slimline head make for a razor that is very easy to manoeuvre, even under the nose.- Irritation-free shave at long last, regardless of blade!- No blade alignment issues.Bad points:- Very mild, maybe too mild. The Derby Extra and Shark Blades that I'd been using with my previous DE razor are now going unused and I've had to order more Silver Stars which are substantially sharper.- Like EJ and Muhle, Merkur makes its heads from rigid but brittle chrome-plated Zamak (zinc alloy). All these razors share the same weak point: the screw thread on the underside of the cap. If the razor is dropped, or the handle is over-tightened, or the chrome plating is compromised through heavy use, then screw thread is liable to break off the cap.

Read full review...

It feels good in the hand and on the face even with sensitive skin. I switched from Trac 2 cartridges (still a good choice for avoiding ingrown hairs) to a safety razor in an effort to be even more gentle to my skin. Mission accomplished. It does take 2 to 3 passes in order to get the same closeness but, that’s the point. You can control the amount of abuse your skin takes more with a single blade safety razor than with a multi blade cartridge. Plus, you get to lather up between each pass of the blade. The Merkur blade that comes with it is fine. I’ve taken to using mild Viking Blades available here on Amazon without any trouble. The sweet spot angle is easy to achieve. The razor is easy to control but I wear a goatee so I don’t have to deal with the upper lip. I’ve read that you can make the 23C more aggressive with sharper blades like feather but I’m not interested in that. I’ve also read that the screw that holds this 3 piece together could be a weak point over time but I’ve not come across any confirmation of that. Still, I’m careful not to drop it or put it away wet to avoid corrosion. I still travel with Trac 2 cartridges since DE blades are not allowed in carry on baggage. My focus is minimizing damage to my face. If your focus is on the closest shave imaginable, you may need an open comb design.

I've been using the Merkur 34C HD for a few months now and I've appreciated it. I just got the 23C yesterday and had my first shave with it earlier this morning. Just like I guessed, it is also a cracker jack of a razor and stands as a comparable companion razor to the 34C. Perfect shave. It shouldn't give the impression of being a "light" razor even though that is sometimes said, even by Merkur. It has good heft and balance, and feels right in the hand. It's the same on the aggressiveness scale since it has the same head. Mild to medium that is. Same great engineering, and more surgical feel compared to the more artistic Vikings Chieftain BC, or the more colorful Van Der Hagen long handle, both of which I have and use. The three piece design is intriguing like an older design cigarette lighter is, or a folding knife is. I think there is a little more finesse required with a Merkur closed comb. compared to other brands in terms of getting done what you need to do. I think that lends itself to making you a more adept and more precise shaver; It's therefore less of an industrial shave and more of a surgical shave for the guy who has the matching ability.

I bought this razor back in October 2018 and it held up perfectly until about a week ago (march 2021). Little bits of metal fell off, and now the screw won't hold it together. I bought this safety razor+ a 100-pack of razors for a combined cost of $40. I feel like I have a lifetime supply of razors. Even though it was an amazing product that I freaking loved, it is pretty disappointing that the Merkur razor fell apart after only a couple years. I thought it too would last a lifetime (or at least 10 years). I was about to repurchase it, but maybe there are other safety razors out there that would last longer.

It is light - 60 gr - with fairly long handle ~98 mm, which is my preference in a shaver.Blade exposure make it a mild shaver so it requires a few more passes to achieve smooth shaving but, you can pull it freely along your face with hardly any chance to cut yourself. I shave once with shaving gel and then, additional passes with only wet face.Very good quality product made in Solingen Germany. It is a three piece shaver so just a little less comfortable to remove and insert blade then twist-to-open type shaver.Modern traditional style double edge safety razor.

This is my first classic razor (T-shape). For about 15 years before I used Gillette Mach 3 razor. What can I say? This Mercur razor is very sturdy and well made. The quality is good. I used it for about 10 times and it is rather hard to shave correctly after Mach 3 razor. It takes longer to shave with classic razor, but I like it. It is something about man's ritual, when nobody disturbs you and you can reflect with yourself :) I also suggest you to order several different blades and try them, because they are all different.

I am trying to go plastic free and decided to buy a safety razor thinking I would have to compromise on the closeness of my shave. However, this razor combined with quality razor blades gives as close a shave as I have ever had. The biggest bonus is that over the year I have estimated that I will be at least £45 better off, and the years after that I will save a minimum of £80 a year and no plastic waste at all.

This razor is a great way to start traditional DE shaving. Excellent for those who have been DE shaving for a long time and those just starting out. DE shaving is more economical, environmentally friendly and just plain does a better job. When I graduated to a Merkur 33c and a Feather AS-DS my wife made a command decision and appropriated the 23c for her legs. It's unbelievable how much money we've saved!

I'd never used a safety razor before, so I was more than a bit nervous! However, I am 100% pleased with it. I get a better shave than with other women's razors and have only nicked myself once over the last month. I even use it to shave my underarms and bikini line. It is so much easier than I had anticipated. The razor itself is beautifully designed. I am very happy to have it in my shower.

+ Plastic-free+ Easy to install blade+ Safe - haven't cut myself yet, whereas I used to with disposables, actually wondered if it was doing anything first few timesFor legs and underarms could do with a longer handle, but appreciate it's designed for facesMerkur does a Lady's version with a longer handle, but it wasn't in stock anywhere when I got this

16.12.2020

Very good quality razor. I used one from the supermarket but this is far superior in quality. If I was happy with the initial Wilkinson I bought locally, it still was a bit fiddly and the aftershave left a burning sensation. With similar blades, the Merkur is a real treat! Close shave, no cuts and no burning. Why isn’t it more widely available???

7.2.2019

Simple, unimprovable, easy to clean, virtually impossible to cut yourself, good-looking, indestructible. This is my go-to razor. I don’t need an adjustable razor because I shave every day. I don’t need an aggressive shave because I’m not obsessed with being macho man! With my 23c I get a perfect shave every morning and my face looks great.

21.10.2019

Been shaving for a long long time but this Merkur 23c is the best double edge safety razor I've ever used...! Amazing, you'd have to work hard to cut yourself...! Clean shaves and no razor burn for the beginner and veteran alike...! Highly recommend... Get a Proraso pre shave and some Proraso or other quality shave cream and have at it..!

I already have 3 Merkurs. All are heavy so very little pressure required. Heavy handedness of my current Merkurs results in gashes so you learn very quickly.Wanted to try something lighter but this is perhaps too light for me.However the 23c is very easy to use compared with my heavyweight Futur so great for beginners in my opinion.
