This game is a really good idea and my 2 and 4 year olds enjoy playing with it. I am disappointed with it for two reasons: firstly there's no lid to the box so storing it is a nightmare - it only has to slip and all the letters fall out. I can't understand why there isn't a lid on it, it just doesn't make sense to have it open the way it is. Secondly there aren't enough letters to spell certain common words "mummy" "daddy" etc, even though there aren't word boards for those, children inevitably want to spell words they use often. The word boards themselves are quite limited too, a lot of letters aren't required for any of the words "x" "z" "q" being the most obvious. And worse still,it's impossible to fill all of the letter boards at the same time due to the lack of letters so when your children want to do them all they can't. If they stuck a lid on the box, more letters in the box and an option to buy more word boards this would be an excellent game.

My 3 year old son had showed an interest in the alphabet so I searched the internet for a suitable toy to promote his learning. This was an excellent purchase. He has had it for about a year now and he still plays with it every single day. At first he used the tiles included to learn how to spell the words then he began to use the letters to spell the words without the tiles and now he uses them to spell everything! Every letter of the alphabet is included which is not the case with other toys we have bought for him. My son finds words on his posters and on products and uses the letters to spell the words he finds. He can now spell loads of different words outloud and it is all thanks to the presentation and quality of this wonderful toy.It is what I would describe as an 'heirloom' toy which I will keep when he is older to give to his own children who I am sure will love it just as much as he does.

Excellent learning resource!! My son loves letters and puzzles so when I saw this thought it is a perfect marriage of the two. This is fantastic. Sturdy, durable and attractive. I am really impressed and my son absolutely loves this! We use it for letter recognition and to link the visual image to the words. In this way I Ama able to introduce him to reading and the relationship between letters and words all whilst enjoying playing with his new puzzle! My only complaint is that there is no cover. It is beyond me why so many toy manufacturers fail to incorporate this into their toy design. My only other complaint isone of the letters were not printed properly .Nonetheless this is an excellent product which I know ei'll last my 2.5 year old for a long time!!

I've been buying Melissa and Doug toys for several years now and have always been impressed by their quality, durability and attractiveness. I bought these puzzle word boards because my son now recognises all his letters and is becoming interested in forming some short words. This set includes eight double-sided puzzle boards showing the picture and accompanying words for:bird, frog, duck, boat, cake, sock, hen, sun, pig, cow, cat, dog, car, bus, fish and bear. There are enough letters so eight boards can be completed without having to put them away after each word.As usual, I'd recommend this set although a lid on the storage box would have been helpful!

This puzzle is an excellent way of helping to learn phonics and reinforce letter sounds. Perfect for 2-5 year olds, will keep them entertained for quite some time. The double-sided word boards represent good value for money too. As with all Melissa & Doug puzzles, this is well made and durable. My only bug-bear with this item is that, unlike other M&D puzzles, it does not have a lid (although there is a flimsy plastic cover for the section that holds the letters); my very independent son gets it out from our big selection of puzzles and inevitably everything falls out! Would have been 5 stars if not for that but still, a product worth having

I love love love this beautiful set of first word puzzles! Beautiful colourful pictures, excellent choice of first words. Bought this for my 2 year old daughter, it's a great way to gently introduce letters to preschoolers in a fun way! Definitely not giving this toy away, it will be handed down generations! My only complaint was the lack of lid, so you do have to be extra careful not to loose the letters. But this is common with all Melissa and Doug puzzles, and thanks to other reviews, I was expecting the lack of lid - but the quality of the product far outweighs this very minor issue with packaging/storage of the puzzle.

As usual a beautifully made, educational toy from Melissa and Doug. My 3 1/2 year old couldn't wait for me to unwrap it for her. The quality is excellent, with lovely pictures, plenty of letters and a variety of words to complete. Very helpful when trying to encourage letter recognition, phonics and learning to associate letters with simple words. The only downside is the lovely storage 'box' is more a storage 'tray', it has no lid! Every time my daughter gets the box from it's shelf, she spills a few letters, despite her being exceptionally careful. It's a shame that something as simple as a lid has been missed.

Fantastic wooden Melissa and Doug spelling play set. There are eight double sided trays with a colourful picture illustrating a simple word to be spelled. There are good size, colourful, wooden letters to fit into the spaces on each tray. There are easy words for toddlers such as bus, dog, cat, hen, sun, car and some more difficult ones such as frog, bird, boat, sock and duck. Sadly, as with all Melissa and Doug toys, there is no lid, which is a great shame with this toy, as there is no way of keeping the letters safe. It is great for learning the alphabet, spelling and reading easy words,

I bought this toy for my two 3 year old grandaughters and they love to play with it. It is very educational as well as fun. My disappointment comes with one of the letters already losing part of its colour veneer and also once unwrapped the section for the letters does not have a lid!!! In fact for the price I would have liked the whole toy to have had a lid. The letters now have to live in an ice cream container to keep them all together. A slightly deeper wooden box with a sliding lid would work well. All that said I would recommend this toy for the fun and educational value.

I think that this activity is a really good value wooden product which seems to appeal to the children I have presented it to.The puzzles are a good starting point for introducing word building activities, for example fish can then lead to making the words dish and wish... car to far and jar etc.My only disappointment is that the letters do not seem to be colour coded in any way. I would have liked for example the vowels all to be the same colour. As other reviewers I also think that there should be a lid for the box.I would highly recommend this see and spell activity.

My 2 boys (aged 3 & 4) love playing with these jigsaws. There are not enough letters to do each plaque, they cant do one or two plaques, leave them and move onto the next, which my boys find abit mind blowing, they have to break up the plaques they have just done, to enable them to have enough letters for another one.I think this is a great educational toy, which my boys actually love playing with BONUS!A slight improvement I would suggest to the manufacturers is 'a lid' the box is very nice to keep everything in and tidy, but with no lid, it's not very practical.

I have found this great for our son who is 3 and tends to lose attention when we normally start going on about letters but he loves the pictures on this, and its genetral colourfullness. The words are just the right ones, i.e. common and short ones of things he likes, and he loves trying to find the right letters. It makes him focus on the shape of the letter in question without me having to actually tell him to look at the shape so he learns without realising, and he will spend quite some time going through them in any one session which is great.

I bought this as a birthday present for my 3 year old grandson and he finds it lots of fun.I am very pleased with the quality and sturdiness of the product. There are 8 double sided boards showing a picture and the spelling of the word is carved out so the letter shapes can be inserted. There are 50 wooden letters. It is a fun way to learn the alphabet and spelling of small words.I have bought several products of Melissa & Doug and have found them all to be excellent quality and value for money.

Easter is always a problem when grand kid is special needs and diary intolerant. This toy was excellent for him instead of an easter egg. He loves his school and this was a perfect toy to help with his letters and spelling. He also loved it as he is really getting into learning his letters, and can sign them very well. It is a very good toy for co ordination too. It is excellent to help recognise words. I would say all reception kids would benefit from this excellent toy making learning fun.

I love these, they are colourful, robust and solidly built, I know that they will be able to withstand the rigours of everyday use in my 4 year old's work box. I home educate and was at loss as to what to activities to place in my daughter's workbox to complement her learning when she is required to work independently...on the down -side, there isn't a solid lid to cover the box, so I keep the chunky wooden letters in a zip lock bag in the tray when not in use, so as not to loose them
