I wanted a letter sorting peg puzzle for my little girl's 3rd birthday. She loves puzzles, but is still too rough to treat cardboard jigsaw puzzles with the care that they require, so I still prefer wooden puzzles. She loves sorting out the letters to fit into the wooden tray, some of the pieces are very similar in shape, but they are different enough for her to realise when she's not quite got it right, which is great. Under each letter is a picture - e.g. under a is a picture of an apple, which reinforces the connection between the letters and the words that they begin. Each of the letter pieces has a little plastic peg, which makes them easy to take in and out (unless you just tip them out,as is my daughter's preferred method) and it also makes them easier to turn. I have had problems with similar shape puzzles in the past without the pegs and it has cause my daughter frustration as she finds them fiddly. This is a good quality puzzle and for what it is, I think it is excellent value. I haven't been disappointed by any of the Melissa and Doug products that I have purchased for my children and this is no exception. The only criticism I might have is the the holes are slightly bigger than the pieces, which whilst good for a beginner, who is struggling with co-ordination, is slightly less aesthetically pleasing when finished - although that is from my perspective - my children don't care at all!

My son was bought one of the 6 piece animal peg puzzles for his first birthday and he's been able to do it without thinking for quite some time now so for Christmas we thought we'd look for something as the 'next step up' - This seemed perfect. We expected it would take him quite some time to show any recognition with any of the letters but thought it'd be a nice way to start the learning process.Within a couple of days of receiving the gift my 20 month old boy could put over half of the pieces back and today, after having it for two weeks, I can say 'Where is O for octopus' and he picks up the right piece. He can't do that with all of the pieces yet but he's really starting to recognise the letters and the pictures beneath at a much quicker pace than I'd have expected.Very very impressed. It's sturdy, well made and the pictures are fun. A few of them weren't the sort of pictures I was expecting (C for carrots for example) but they'll all get him to the same place once he's ready for those words!

See Attached Picture.I bought this as a Christmas gift. On seeing what is shown in the first photo, rather than wrap this present up, I reported it as defective to amazon. Amazon refunded my money and indicated that I did not need to return the item.I opened the item intending to repair it in time for Christmas and discovered what is shown in the second photo. The item is not actually defective - it is just poor packaging design.Item review: The graphics are a little basic and lacking appreciation of how shadowing should be done, but for a small child it is on first inspection most satisfactory and acceptable quality for a small child. A few bits of wood will require some sanding though. My first draft of this review was rejected,I think due to the 1 star I gave it for visability, generally speaking the product is perfect so far.

I bought this as it was one of the few lower case alphabet puzzles around, and was definitely the cheapest i could find in the shops.plus points- the pictures under the letters all follow the phonics - i've seen some where 'i' is ice cream rather than 'insect' like this one which suipports how kids learn their letter sounds- easy to pick up pieces and the handles on each piece are pretty secure so suitable for little ones who like still like to chew- nice vivid colours on the pieces and the picturesdown sides- some of the letters fit in more than one space making it confusing sometimes for mylittle one especially L & i,its not so much an issue for d & p and n & u as these can still look similar upside down. This said i would still recommend it as others available are double the price for only slightly better quality.

Bought this for me two year old to help him to become familiar with the alphabet. To be honest, I thought it would be a bit old for him yet and didn't expect him to be that keen. He's got quite a few picture puzzles already so couldn't see him showing much interest in this. However, he seems to love it! It seems to be his favourite puzzle at the moment and is definitely helping him to learn the alphabet. It is well made and the pieces are standing up to being thrown around the house regularly. My only criticism is that some of the pieces can be placed in the wrong position, e.g. the 'i' and the 'l', the 'c' and the 'e' and the 'n' and the the 'u'. And even I have difficulty working out which is the 'd'and which is the 'p'!!

My daughter has had this board around since before she was a year old and now, at 20 months old, she can recognise all the letters and complete the puzzle unaided - which she often does on a daily basis, and this also transfers, we use the picture words from this board to prompt her to recognise letters elsewhere, so I can say "Where's an 'n' - like in 'nest'?" and she can recognise an 'n'.I had to come and review this product as I primarily credit it, along with a couple of Android apps and a couple of sets of magnetic letters, as giving her an interest in the alphabet and teaching it to her at such a young age. Priceless, really. Great price too, I will be buying it for my friends'children.

I bought this for my 2 year old to help him with letters and the alphabet.....The pieces fit together very well and the pictures underneath are a lovely bonus. The pegs for picking up the letters are just right for little fingers.A couple of negative comments and the reason for 4 stars is, if you have a child who still puts everything in their mouth, the wood retains moisture and the paper printing starts to come off. Also, the pieces are quite small and I found my little one with the 'o' completely in his mouth!!I do recommend this product, but if you want it to stay perfect, keep it away from your little one's mouth and supervise them....

This puzzle is well made and bright and colourful. The design means that the child can't put the letters in the wrong place (unless forced) and the pictures that are in each place for the letters are sensible everyday things that help your child's vocabulary. We have noticed our little boy relating the letters to the pictures so it seems to be teaching him not just the alphabet but also which words start with that letter. He enjoys playing it over and over and doesn't seem to be getting bored with it like he does with some of the other similar puzzles that use only shapes or cars.

This is far too complicated for my 2 year old autistic son, but I bought it hoping that one day he'd have a go and maybe learn something, if not, it's a great looking toy to have around the place. Each letter has a lovely picture- piano on p, apples on a. They are all done so well. I hate when childrens puzzles have cartoon like pictures of things, very unrealistic, pink elephants blue cows and that sort of thing, it really bugs me, but with this one, everything is as it should be. I think it'd be a lovely gift/ toy for a young child. I hope that one day my son enjoys it too.

my 2 and a half year old loves this puzzle, she has mastered where all the pieces fit and is slowly learning the letters, she loves the pictues as they are bright, colourful and not the typical pictures you would find under most letters (we also rate the 123 version)i thought they were slightly overpriced but im glad i brought them as they are well used! the pieces are chunky with a nice sized peg (much better than non-pegged letter puzzles)so easy for little fingers to manage, the letters maybe could have fitted slightly better but that bothers me much more than my daughter x

Great toy for a toddler learning letters. Lightweight but solid. My only gripe is that letters with rotational symmetry e.g. p/d, o, s and others won't fit if rotated which can bring frustration to a toddler if it doesn't fit where it looks like it should. There's vertical lines on the backing with different colours so you can see which way letters should go. But try telling that to a toddler who has tipped the letters out and they aren't the correct orientation.

My daughter loved this from about 1.5 years. It's not the most elegant jigsaw ever made, but she spends HOURS taking out the pieces and putting them back in. She's now almost 2 and she recognises all the letters and knows words that begin with each letter. Definitely thanks to this jigsaw! I would definitely recommend.N.B we bought it when she was 1 and the letters were too small for her then - she kept eating them. So maybe suggest 1.5 years upwards.

Purchased for my just 2 year old to help with letter recognition and sounds. The added bonus with the pictures underneath help him with words too. He can copy when I say the letter but isn't recognising them yet but he's still really young. I really like that these are all lowercase letters as the majority are all capitals. The bright colours are great as each letter is clearly visible. The pegs are perfect size and easy to lift out, great quality.

brilliant puzzle would highly recommend. my 2,4 and 5 year old sons all love it. its bright and the pieces are easy to put in and pull out with the little pegs on great for younger children and for older children is great for learning the alphabet, recognising the individual letters and as each letter has a picture under each one beginning with that letter it helps with their sounds when learning words. my boys all love it so great value for money.

I bought this as it was on the Black Griday deals and thought it was a great stocking filler for my daughter. Well I had no idea she would love it so much! My daughter is 2 and has quickly picked up and new words (such as x-ray) and has started to saying what letters they begin with.I am so pleaded I bought this and think it’s really going to help her learn the alphabet. It’s great quality wood and can see it lasting a long time.
