Original review below but read on in CAPS for subsequent experience:-WORE JEANS FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND THEN WASHED THEM SEPARATELY ON A GENTLE, 30 DEGREEE WASH. ON CHECKING THEM AFTER WASHING THE SEAM ON THE RIGHT LEG HAD SPLIT AND THERE WAS A ONE INCH GAP. I RETURNED THIS PAIR AND AMAZON REPLACED THEM WITHIN 36HRS...WELL DONE.THE REPLACEMENT PAIR WERE LABELLED THE SAME 32W/32L BUT WHEN I PUT THEM ON THE FIT WAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AND THEY WERE AN INCH LONGER THAN PREVIOUS PAIR. (MEASURED AGAINST AN OLD PAIR OF 501s). SO I RETURNED THIS PAIR BUT HAD TO OPT FOR A REFUND AS REPLACEMENT WASN'T AN OPTION, PRESUMABLY AS THE FIRST PAIR WHICH I RETURNED HADN'T BEEN FULLY PROCESSED?I THEN ORDERED A NEW PAIR (AGAIN 32W/32L)WHICH ARRIVED TODAY AND FIT PERFECTLY, JUST LIKE THE FIRST PAIR. UNFORTUNATELY, THE PRICE OF THESE HAD GONE UP SO I ENDED UP PAYING AN EXTRA £6 DUE TO LEVI'S QUALITY ISSUES ... SUCH A SHAME.I'VE BEEN WEARING LEVI'S FOR OVER 40 YEARS. MY FIRST PAIR WERE SHRINK TO FIT .. STILL REMEMBER SITTING IN THE BATH WITH THEM ON AND THE WATER TURNING BLUE WITH THE DYE.Original review below ...Good fit and quality at a genuinely discounted price.I was concerned about the red tab having a capital E not a lower case e, having read that the capital E was not used after 1971 and anything new having this would be a fake! However, on checking with Levi's directly I found that both the "E" and "e" are currently used on the tabs along with a third version, on a small proportion of jeans, which just have the copyright symbol. (to signify that Levi's own the copyright to the tab not just the writing on it ..) There is quite a market for vintage jeans with the "E" with some fetching very high prices ... this could be where the idea that anything with this which is new is a fake. This in NOT true. Here's what Levi's said themselves:--Ayşe (Levi's)2 Dec 2020, 16:36 CETDear Bob,Thank you for your reply. Also, please note that capital E can be found on some of our products from the current collection. This is a matter of design and it means that these specific items are made with premium fabric. Also, Amazon is one of our authorized sellers if you purchase from them directly, however, if you purchase from another seller on Amazon, we are not able to guarantee the authenticity of the item.Should you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.Kind regards,AyşeLevi’s® Consumer Relations DepartmentTel. I bought 2 pairs of 501 STF black 33x36. These are the first shrink-to-fit 501's I've bought since I was a kid, so wasn't sure what to expect. I haven't worn them yet; only briefly tried them on before and after the first wash. My plan is to wash them 2 or 3 times before wearing.Washing - I marked one pair by trimming corners off the label; those will be my dress jeans that I will always wash inside out - and hope to rarely (if ever) have to wash them. The other pair I will wear several times a week and expect to have to wash them a lot (and I won't turn them inside out to wash as I want the washed look on these). I ride horses daily and they'll get filled with dirt and sweat quickly. It will be interesting to see how the wear compares over the years.Size - I normally wear 32x32 (non STF), which fit on me a bit short and a bit tight. So I ordered 33x36 as per the Levis guidelines. I tried them on un-washed, and indeed they were large on the waist and very long. I washed them in warm water, heavy-duty wash with regular soil settings on my washer, and then dried on hot. Tried them on again and they had shrunk a LOT. Pretty much perfect; hope they don't shrink much more. I am washing them the second time now; not sure if I'll do a 3rd.Color - A nice dark black, I like it, although it isn't a super deep pitch black...at some angles it almost looks a deep dark dark blue. It has a slight washed look even before the first wash (I can see light/white threads, which I like).Material - Softer than I expected even before washing; I like it although based on some of the reviews I was expecting them to be heavier and stiffer.I will update after I've worn them a few times - very happy so far though.

So, these are the closest thing you'll find to vintage levi's without forking over hundreds on a pair of LVC's. If you're interested in trying out the raw denim craze without going all in on a pair of selvedge jeans, this is the place to start. This was my second pair of 501 STF's, and I love them.I'm gonna start out with the review for people who know what they are about to buy. Some people have said that buying on amazon you aren't sure exactly what quality you're getting. This could be true for other jeans (some manufactured in egypt, mexico, indonesia, etc) but I've had two identical pairs, same quality, ordered 3 months apart. I trust amazon. If you aren't a return 501 STF customer, don't rely on me to convince you. There's a few blogs that have detailed info on why they love this pair of jeans, look for one on Primer and one by Thighs Bigger Than Your Head, both on the 501 STF. Then there are places like RawrDenim and 501xxinfo that show you what they end up looking like after a few years of wear, and they range from cool to awesome. They'll give you the sizing info they prefer, in general, if you want a slim fit, don't size up in the waist, and size up 2-3" in the length (it's safer to be long than short). I went both routes (levi's suggested method and blogger suggested method) and got two different but still good pairs of jeans. the levi's way gives you a little baggier fit (i'm used to the levi 511 and gap skinny, myself, but i'm converting over to 501) that seems to be more like "dad jeans" but if you want fade and comfort, then the levi's suggested route is the way to go.To conclude, buy these jeans, and wear the hell out of them. You won't regret it.

My first ever pair of 501's, always wore Wrangler as a youngster but now aged 55 I decided to try out some new jeans. Well the High Street outlets were awful with nobody stocking the type of fit and style that I loved in the 80's, all the jeans I tried on were slim fit and/or tapered leg, ok I am not a slim chap but some of them I could barely get my feet through never mind past my knees !Every shop I went into stocked the same style and fit of jeans, they all seemed to be very thin material too with a horrible leg fit not suitable for a man of my age.My son told me to try Amazon for a pair of 501's and bingo he was right. The style, the shape, the quality of material (very thick, unlike the high street brands I tried) and the size (waist 42 leg 32 - believe it or not I am not fat merely tall at 6ft 2inch) was perfect. These are genuine items, amazing quality and a very good mid/late 80,s style, not too loose not too slim fit, you know what I mean if you lived through those times.I have recently been watching some DVD's of both The Smiths, Tears For Fears and Simple Minds and their jeans must have been 501's , well that is what mine are like, stone washed, really thick material with button fly - sure, not the easiest of ways especially if in a rush to go to the loo but they will ease off in time. These are genuine Levi 501 jeans, bought directly from Amazon, not third party sellers ( please note these may also be genuine items but from looking at the various photos posted up of the "leather" rear patch, there is one big difference that shows them to be fakes). So buy in confidence from Amazon and wear a piece of history.

I've worn 501s most of my life. I just love the button fly. Plus they give me a butt where other brands don't. But Levi's are getting so much harder to find anymore. Around here, Wranglers reign supreme. I'd lost enough weight that the size 32s had beco,e rather baggy for me to wear. I saw these on Amazon and the price was great. They normally sell for $79 at Penny's or Macy's. Plus, the size that I need are even more difficult to find. I guess it's the proof you'd need to see that America has gotten fatter. The 32" inseam is just too short. Even the 34" inseam is kinda short than I like. So how difficult is it to find size 29" waist with 36" inseam? Very difficult it turns out.Apparently Levi doesn't make a 29"/36" jean anymore. So I ordered a size 29" waist with 34" inseam. They fit great, though the length I fear is gonna come up a tad short. Fearing this, I also ordered a size 30" waist with 36" inseam. They are a tad baggy. The length was perfect though. So frustrating. I'm gonna keep them just in case I do gain a bit of weight though. I'll just have to be happy with the 34" inseam for the 29" waist. On the jeans themselves. It seems the denim they are using is a bit thinner than what they used to use. My old 32"s that I've had for well over 10 years and been wearing them day in and day out, putting them thru hell and back, have worn down and becoming thread bare, yet it still seems to be a thicker denim. I just hope these Levi 501s will stand up to the abuse that I'm used to for a pair of denim jeans.

Update: I just replaced these after over 4 years. I’d say that’s a great ROI. The only wear that concerns me is where the four main seams meet below the seat of the pants, between the legs. The fabric here has worn through, but I’m a big guy and I’m sure that’s a factor. I’m happy with the usable lifespan, and the worn pair can now be very conformtable “dirty job” pants. The length never shrank dramatically. My suspicion is the “big and tall” denim isn’t the same as the standard sizing and shrinks less. I have a pair one size smaller that’s NOT big and tall, and those are labeled as Cone Mills denim. The big and tall have no such label.- - -The jeans are nice. Deep indigo blue, nice stitching, button fly seems sturdy. Overall, probably the best way to buy Levis. The recommended sizing was to go up one size (2") in the waist, and up 3" in length. A 30" length is about right in my 559s, so I figured a 34" would shrink to 31" and give me a little to cuff. I ordered them sized this way, and swam in them after soaking for an hour and drying.Ordering my actual waist size and a 34" length was a lot better. The waist was a tad snug after shrinking, but after a couple of wears, it was perfect. The length didn't shrink as much as I had imagined, maybe more like 2", but that might shrink after I wear them again later. The fit is relaxed and straight, which is good if you actually have legs and a butt.tl;dr - Don't upsize the waist, upsize the length a little, pretty nice jeans.

About a year ago I was in San Francisco and bought a couple of pairs of Levi 501's from the Levi store. I used to wear 501's when I was a kid and liked them a lot and so was delighted with my purchase. After a year or so of continual wear I thought it was time to add to the collection so after a quick search on Amazon I ordered 2 pairs of these jeans in the same size as my US ones. When they showed up my initial reaction was disappointment. Compared to the US jeans there were several differences - the denim seemed less substantial for a start, buttons a different colour, no red selvedge in the seams... Further reference to the Levi's website showed just how many different pairs of 501's they make,so I was just naive and these did indeed seem to be a genuine pair, just not the exact model I thought I had ordered. Fair enough. Next surprise was when I got home and tried them on.. although I had ordered the same size as the US ones (and these are shrink-to-fit so should have been a bit loose until the first wash) the new (unwashed) jeans were really quite tight, certainly likely to be a bit too tight once shrunk. Curiously, both the US pairs I have and this new pair were made in Mexico so the size difference seems a bit odd. I'm contacting the seller to request an exchange as I still want these jeans, I do think they are good value, just a bit frustrating about the size difference...

My wardrobe is 501's. I fashion all my accoutrements around them. When I have to dress up I can use black 501's for the opera or kaki with a white shirt for the office. However I have always chosen my work environment for its fashion taste in stone washed 501's. Do not tell anyone but I take mine to the cleaners and have them dry-cleaned and pressed (no starch), just crisp and casual at the same time; it is an old habit from my military days. Come to think of it the military used button fly's also.I can see the problem of purchasing online vs. store bought is that they use obscure words as "rigid" in place of gage (or oz.)Not one did they mention the tab color which is Levi's way of sorting the Mercedes quality version from their Yugo (lighter weight but still from Levi) version. And yes they are subject to globalization which in this day and age is a "no no"; and there is no way to tell without looking at the label. Well enough of this negative stuff. An advantage of on line is getting those obscure colors and exact size (saving a tad in tailoring). Also saving gasoline (sort of an expensive commodity now days) and time. Not to mention there is some sort of psychological thrill in placing and receiving the order. It is sort of a mini-Christmas.

I have tried all types of jeans throughout my years but always go back to 501's. I like the fit, the button fly can't break like a zipper and they have a classic look. One of the things that is different from the ones I wore 30 years ago is all of the colors available now and what seems to me like different types of cotton for each color. Some seem more like a woven cotton and some like a knit. And the more like a knit that they are the more they stretch out when you wear them. You can wash and dry them and they fit fine but after an hour of wear, (sit down stand up bend and kneel) the butt is all baggy and stretched out and the legs as well but I guess this is the case with most jeans. When you wear a belt with them, the belt seems to ride up and cause a weird situation where it is above the waistline of the jeans and into your boxers. This is made worse with thin belts. I think a couple of more belt loops would help with this.. I never liked the big brown "leather?" size tag on the back either. It always looked like something that should be ripped off after purchase but of course it is not meant to be and is stitched on tight. I can live with that and as for the stretching out, I will by a size smaller next time.

Yes the description says that these have been pre-washed etc etc, but they are not the Levi 501 which I first purchased, whatever the description states, that said, they are comfortable and much smoother than the Levi's of my youth. Interesting that it was quite fashionable in my youth to take your Levi's to a tailor and have them make a turnup and the one really distinctive point that identified it as Levis and not Wrangler or Lee, was the tab from seam - this is not evident on more modern variants.Overall though still 5 stars for this item. Levi's do last for years. I still have two denim jackets which I bought in the 1990's and despite my best efforts, both are still in one piece and look fine.Hope these jeans lasts as long.Update======Just bought another pair and arrived today £8.00 more than when I first wrote the review 5 years ago on the same item. That pair is still going strong. A bit frayed at the bottom of the leg where periodically they have dropped too low or my shoes have had insufficient heel, but despite regular that wear, the jeans whilst a bit faded, still look in reasonable condition.I hope this new pair last as long.......but still not true originals.

Wow! I've never reviewed a pair of jeans before. This is EXCITING!!! When I think of the trouserless masses waiting in suspen-ders to hear my judgement. Hooo-Ah!!My 15 minutes start right now...Ooooh-kay...H'mmm...Well...These are jeans. Definitely jeans. No other word for them. Their basic jeanishness sticks out proudly. For all to see. Yeah. They are also, apparently, Levi's. His mum even sewed a label above the back pocket, presumably to make sure he didn't lose them.Apparently it didn't work.Still. Never mind. He's still got 500 to choose from.Sorry, yes, that's another thing. It says '501' on the label but you only actually get one. I'm assuming the '1' as a unit, counts for a pair.Otherwise there'd be 502.Now. I don't know what people have been saying, but whatever you might have heard, I'm in no position to testify that these are Straight Men's Jeans. We all wear the same things nowadays. You need a transexual. Or Edna Everage.DAME Edna Everage. My apologies.I can't say they feel particularly light when being worn either. They must be referring to the colour.Or the name of the man who Broke Them In.They're not bad, anyway...

Not all jeans that are sold as Levi's Original are the real thing. These were. You can tell by the familiar weight and strength of the material and the traditional cut that fits most physiques. Anyone who has owned genuine Levi's can tell the difference. This particular model has the 4-button fly closure (plus the waistline one) which is a little fiddly but eliminates the future frustration of an inoperative zip, when one of the teeth goes awry. Given the legendary longevity of these jeans, this is a very real possibility. The cut is straight, so they are narrow without being skinny and allow for comfortable movement for all the activities that jeans were designed for. The fit is true to size,so you don't end up with silly, short legs, and they stand up to frequent washing. The one-wash model is quite a dark blue and after more than one year of use, they don't seem to be getting much lighter, so something to consider if you want a more washed-out look. For my husband, these are the jeans of choice and we were happy to find them at a reasonable price minus the seasonal discount that Amazon offered at the time. Very happy with this item and will buy again.

These Levi's Men's 501 Jeans, are definately Dad jeans and a cheap alternative to the funny denim offerings from the crappy discount stores and the mall's high dollar offering. These may not be exactly origional 501s once offered, but after all these years since my first pair, button fly jeans will not do for everyone as the do for me, as some just won't appreciate the effort to exercise your fingers each time you turn away from the urinal. Myself, I like the reminder of my youth, when zippers were not that dependable and young guys liked the security of the four buttons there to sheild your bulge, even if you left one undone occasionally. Young girls would notice that and you might get a sly look and a smile. But, I digress, my love of button fly Levis will go on, past when I will need to comb my hair back on the way out of the bathroom, or even tuck in my teeshirt or worry the fade has gone on to some legit wear holes, earned from many wearings and washings. Too much info? I just can't pay over 60$ for a pair of jeans. Even young guys could afford a pair in the 60's and 70's, but that just economics talk and inflation regret. Still love my jenos.

These jeans have got it all: color, style, and fit. It's no wonder they are a classic. They give an extremely sleek definition to the legs while being very comfortable at the same time. I have a pair of Levi's 505 straight-leg jeans, and I would recommend the 501s over those. While they are similar in look, I find the 505s to be very constricting in the thigh and crotch area; it took me a wash before those fit tolerably well, whereas the 501s fit amazingly right from the start––a perfect mix of snugness and openness. This is my first pair of 501s and I bought them mainly to wear with cowboy boots and they look amazing; buy them in a dark wash (I recommend Clean Rigid, the darkest blue wash available and the color I bought them in) and pair them with some black or dark brown cowboy boots and a slick dress shirt, and you've got an effortless, put-together look with a country charm.I love these jeans and will likely buy another, shorter pair soon to wear with dress shoes. I'll update this review if I have anything to add then.Oh, and if you're concerned about the button fly, don't worry; it will feel perfectly natural after wearing it for a day.

Still breaking these in, but I'll probably get another pair. Good jeans, historically. I like the fit. They're not the body-conscious, skinny-jeans type fit that you see almost everywhere today, but they're not baggy either. I would say if you're looking to fit your booty but not ostentatiously, this may be the way to go. Maybe size down one in the waist if you want a more body-conscious butt fit (some of us are more posterior-impaired than others). I wear a 31/32 in khakis, but not worn around the waist, and that's a slim-fit, great on the rear. For jeans I wanted something a little more comfortable. I think these will shrink a bit to fit.Update: I have bought four pairs of these jeans now.Except for one of them, the colors were all true to the website image. One, "cascade wonderland," looks like a flat cobalt or lapis blue on the website. What was sent to me looked like black jeans that had aged badly, just ugly in a thrifting kind of way (and I usually like thrift store things, but sometimes...). Sent them back. The replacement, in lodestone, is great. It's kind of khaki-colored, but really more of a gold. Great fall color.
