This is a medium weight game where each players is trying to send 2 climbers up K2 and down again safely. The game last 18 turns. In that time, players use choices about which cards from their hand to play to use actions like movement, putting up tents and acclimatising (increasing health). The higher up a single climber goes, the more points he is worth at the end of the game. But the higher altitudes are also more risky, and a dead climber means you will lose all of their hard earned points! So do you play it safe or go for the peak? One of my favourite mechanics is that each player has the same set of cards for their deck, and you will all be using all of your cards (even the not-so-good ones)at least twice each game, so hand management is about when you will play a card, not whether you will play it or not.Further details of gameplay and rules can easily be found online. The game is rated high as a family game by others, and I agree. There is no information overload anywhere (e.g. the cards just have a number and a pretty picture, the board spaces have at most 2 numbers on them) the trick is keeping track of lots of little bits of information. There is a "family variant" where each player has the option to "save" one of their climbers from death once per game in case this would be too upsetting. How does the game feel?- The tension build is interesting - everything seems so easy at base camp, but it takes everyone by surprise how difficult it gets when you are all crowding together half way up the mountain, blocking each other and praying for oxygen!- Fun - you really feel like you are fighting nature to overcome the harsh conditions, and the player interaction consists of other climbers getting in your way rather than attacking you in any sense- Challenging - you can see numbers all over the place (though the game never feels mathy) to try and work out your best optionsOther plus points are that the art is good on everything, and there are lots of different ways to change the difficulty setting.

The K2 board game was designed by Polish mountaineer Adam Kaluza. It already has an expansion, called "K2 - Broad Peaks".Every single person to whom I introduced this game enjoyed it. Through apaprently simple mechanics, the game makes you feel in a despairing position to reach the peak of K2-or die trying. The game uses uses cards to make for movement points and oxigen points. It covers a period of eighteen days, and each player has a team of two climbers. You add the height each one of them reached during the game, and that's your final score. However, if one (or both) of your climbers die, you get only one point for each. As a matter of fact, if only one of them dies, you still will most certainly be out of contention for first place.Managing the scarce resources you have in your hands (cards) is pivotal. Also, there is not enough room for everybody as the peak comes closer. You may place tents to help diminish the atrocious weather effects. But, beware: a climber can place only one tent by game, and this tent can not be moved after it is placed firmly into the iced ground.K2 is tense, exciting and reasonably fast to play. It allows up to five players. No game will be the same as the other, and it's not always the one who climbs higher who will win. One must find the right balance between climbing the most high possible, but staying alive at the same time.

The concept is simple - a race between mountaineers to the top of K2. That helps to make it easy to teach the game, since everyone understands easily what they have to do. The mechanics of the game are also quick to teach - a small hand of cards allows one or both of your mountaineers to move or to gain acclimatisation. Each step up the mountain is more or less difficult, and remaining at a given place at the end of your turn may have an impact on the fitness of your climbers. Tents provide shelter, and you have to be aware of the weather, which can quickly drain your capacity for endurance. Near the top, the space available to bivouac becomes smaller, and not every mountaineer who wants to can share the limited space. The game is simple in concept but highly tactical, with good interaction between the players. The theme is so well expressed in the game that you can almost feel the temperature drop in the room as you approach the summit, almost hear the wind rattling the fabric of the tent...

K2 (the second highest mountain after Everest) is a very good board game. It requires a bit of thought as you can't just race up the mountain. You have to look after your climbers or they will die if they fail to acclimatise. The game is very easy to set up and after your first couple of games, you realise what a very good game it is. The components are very well made and I cannot think of anything against it. One of the best things is you can play this as a solo game with a few little rule changes. There are 2 expansion games for this (Everest & Broad Peak) which I hope to get hold of soon. Great game, very highly recommended.

Ideal for adults and kids. The whole point of the game is not just to get to the top of the mountain but to survive a climb! To do this one must balance energy (oxygen), the tent and keep an eye on the weather forecast too. Fast to conclude (45-60 minutes) with interactive route blocking all the way up, summer or winter. Two boards, two scenarios and heaps of repeat gameplay was the reason this was reprinted and been around for a generation, unlike 6000 other board games.

Great little game for solo players as well as co-op.The rules and illustrations are very easy to follow.Needless to say, this is not an easy game to play because it is not just a race to get to the top of K2. You have to take care of your climbers and be aware of the weather and etc.The board has two sides and you can play it on easy or hard level. Believe it or not, the easy level is not that easy !!!!Congratulations to the designer....Great idea.

Bought for Christmas. Played the easy game and once the rules were understood it was a good game for a mixed age group. Plenty of opportunities for different strategies plus an element of luck to keep the outcome in the balance. Looking forward to exploring the game in more detail and trying the more difficult version. Overall a really clever game, especially for those with mountaineering interests.

A deceptively easy game to learn where everyone has the same set of cards, where movement & action are quite straightforward. But its the choices you have to make on which cards to play, while keeping your eye on the weather & the other players. It can get a bit tight near the summit & you do not want to lose a climber!Excellent fun, played in 1hr - 1hr 30mins.
