In the 70s, Hi-Tec created a trainer made specifically for playing squash. It was the first such shoe to be designed for the sport and, more that forty years later, it is still being sold. According to their website, Hi-Tec have sold over 17 million of these trainers, and still going strong.Hi-Tec is no longer a name that is synonymous with premium quality. They have the budget end of the market covered, but their marque is considered by many to be less than first-rate. However, when it comes to a good quality squash shoe, you can’t really get better than this simple, tried and tested design. The sole of the shoe is flat. Unlike a running a shoe, there is no arch support,no torsion bars and no anti-pronation devices. This is because, in the game of squash, you may want to quickly change direction. These additions to your typical sports shoe are likely to impede your ability to do so, and can even cause injury to a fast-moving raqueteer. The grip of these shoes is good. The gum rubber sole doesn’t provide too much grip, but gives just enough to stop you skidding around without stopping you from moving quickly from one part of the court to another.I have also used this shoe for fencing which, like squash, features a lot of lunging. Whereas specialist fencing shoes are very expensive, these are not. Because of the metal piste (playing area), a fencer can burn through trainers like anything, making these squash shoes a popular alternative.I wouldn’t wear these shoes out as they make a fairly poor fashion statement, but for playing squash they are great. As noted above and by many other reviewers, they are also excellent for a range of other sports, from badminton to cycling, making them an excellent, inexpensive and comfortable addition to many a sports bag.

As a beginner at squash I wanted something cheap and sturdy to play in until I felt ready to buy some more expensive equipment. I came across these shoes after seeing positive reviews and I can see why. They are comfortable and well built, supportive for quick turns and spins during matches and whilst not the most attractive trainer, they do look okay. They are a bit on the heavy side however and can take some getting used to.I’ve played around 20-25 matches in them so far and the only problem I have had with these shoes is that the glue holding down the fabric onto the soul of the shoe does not seem to be great, and after a few uses I had to remove the fabric completely, which makes the inside feel a bit ‘sticky’ – not a major issue but something to be aware of.I noticed quite a few of the people I had played against – even the more experienced - also wearing these trainers, so that must tell you something. All in all, a good value trainer which will be suitable for beginners just starting out playing squash which should last you quite a long time and support your squash development.

I purchased these sports shoes and they are exactly what I wanted. However I ordered the size I normally take but on arrival they were a very tight fit. I opted to change them and using the "Millets Sports" returns form I duly sent them back. I awaited the return of the goods but delivery was being held awaiting a phone call from me to pay additional postage. I had no problem with this as it was my error at the initial ordering stage. I then called the company to ask provide payment details only to be told this would not be necessary as the replacements had been dispatched. A week later they finally turned up and I suppose I should be grateful that no additional expense was incurred. However the "Millets Sports" website says one thing but a different action resulted. This time it was to my advantage (and I'm grateful) but what if it had been a different outcome. Perhaps this would have resulted in the customer being delayed delivery of his goods and incurring additional costs. would I use this company again..... I would think twice.

I can't remember when I bought the current pair. There was an interval of a few years in my squash playing, but I suspect it was over a decade ago. Now? There's a split on the outside of each shoe, about where the lip of the front part of the sole comes to an end, longer on the left (my left foot being slightly the larger, so the shoe is under slightly more stress). The fabric under the heel long ago wore through on both. The fabric at the back of the heel has now worn through in a couple of places on both, such that it's shifting around a bit, prompting me to buy a new pair. After, probably, 7-9 years of regular use.I might have bought a new pair before now, but I thought I'd be packing up playing,so it wouldn't be worth it (I can't fairly be described as young). Now though, I've concluded I'll probably be playing once & twice a week for another decade, so I ought to buy... Well, this will be the same pair as I had before, as far as I can tell. Comfortable? Yes. Effective? Yes. Value for money? Top notch!

A fabulous shoe that you just don't think about till you get home and marvel at how unnoticeable they are: light, strong, flexible, tough and lasting... superb. My feet are too wide for them so I slit them along the apparent seams in strategic places, which creates ventilation too but in no way compromises the inherent positive qualities. The sole criticism I could make would be the lack of support for the instep, which is only really noticeable after prolonged walking on pavement; but when charging about the countryside this is not a problem. There are wider-fitting mens' versions which are not advertised on this site, but they'll cost you another fiver or so at least. So a great buy,and one I'll repeat when the pair I have are finally retired - probably next spring, I'd guess. (My reason for not giving it 5-stars - which suggests perfection - is the minimal instep support and lack of width... a brilliant shoe, though, and at a brilliant price).

I have started to play pickleball (a bit like tennis, a bit like badminton...) and I wanted to get a proper court trainer and went with these. The positives are many. The grip is incredible - so much so that I nealy fell over the first time I played in them. My old trainer slid very slightly, and clearly I had got used to it. Stamp down in these and they grip like glue. The are also pretty comfortable. I am a wide 8.5, so I went for a size up (as you always do with sports shoes) and they were perfect. The uppers are also pretty substantial while remaining quite light. And these were also the cheapest.I was sort of hoping that they might help with my plantar faciitis and they do maybe a little, but not much - and you have to say that they make no claim in this regard. So - especially for the price - it is really had to find any fault with these.

I bought these because I play table tennis in a purpose-built centre with an expensive wooden floor and I don't want to mark it. Thus far I've found the shoes very comfortable and extremely grippy; they are also reasonably light which suits a fast-moving game very well. I'd recommend buying a half-size larger than your normal fit like I did, especially if you wear thick(er) socks when playing sports; the shoes are narrower than, for example, running shoes. I also recommend taking the laces out and re-threading them in a sensible pattern, the cross-thread pattern that Hi-Tec use makes it difficult to get the shoe open far enough to insert your foot - however it's a five-minute job to put that right.I'll update this review if I have any wear-and-tear problems down the line,I'm not expecting any though.

I needed to replace my worn out (after 15 years) badminton shoes and was unable to find what I wanted in my local sports shops as they only seemed to have trainers. I particularly wanted to buy the same product again as it is perfect for what I need. Fortunately, as with many other items, Amazon had them in stock and I was able to purchase my replacement shoes. They are very comfortable and grip well, although they needed to be 'run in' a bit as at first they did not grip as well as my worn out shoes, They are fine now though. The only other comment I have is that I needed to order a size larger than I would for ordinary shoes. This seems to be quite common with trainers and even walking boots or shoes.Anyway I am very satisfied with them and so glad that I could buy the same brand again.

This shoe is a long standing classic for those wanting an inexpensive piece of foot wear to play squash or badminton with. It has good arch support but not much cushioning for those of you who need to protect joints.(Cushioning would slow response times). Grip is good and non-marking. Looks are dated but it is for playing sport in and not a fashion accessory! It also comes in half sizes which is useful and I had to return my first pair for a half size up. Returns are free and a replacement item was dispatched immediately; my replacement pair arrived so quickly that I still hadn't posted the originals back! It definitely pays to learn different lacing configurations (a quick web search)as this will have a big effect on how the shoe feels on your foot. At this price it's a no-brainer.

This is a great shoe for exercising. It has a hard sole which translates into the shoe being a little hard on the feet if you wear it cassually. But it is well constructed and durable. I cannot fault it. If you want extra comfort add some insoles. It makes the walk softer. If you want years of service out of the then add shoe goo to the soles as it forms a lauer between the sole and road. Apply it liberally. If you want a shoe for absolute comfort buy the hi-tec silver shadow trainer. But again apply shoe goo. But i only buy hi-tec shoes as i know what quality i get. Yet adain this squash shoe is no different. On top of that the service i got was second to none. It arrived the next day.You just CANNOT go wrong with hi-tec.

These are great shoes and cost only £20, a price that hasn't changed for about 10 years. They are light and provide good support but the heel does not press on the Achilles tendon too much. This is my second pair; my first pair have become too soft and one seam is tearing after about 10 years of weekly badminton. They appear a bit hard and stiff during the first few games. I change the insole for one which provides more shock absorbance and is slightly thicker than the one supplied. I find this gives me a more comfortable fit and less strain from impact. I think that having my heel raised slightly also reduces pressure on the Achilles.A good shoe and you can get the same for four times the price!

Been wearing these trainers for all day use for at least the last 10 - 12 yrs. I usually wear wide fitting but these fit perfectly.A couple of pairs ago, they usually last approx 12 months with everyday wear, I thought the fit had changed as they felt shorter than usual and cramped my toes. I was about to return them when noticed when they were alongside my then current pair, that they were exactly the same length? Upon checking once more, I found they had started to push tissue paper right up the toe of the shoe in addition to the tissue inside. Once removed, they fitted perfectly again. Every pair since has been packed the same. Will obviously continue to buy

I had a pair of these way back in the 80's and they lasted me years. I used them for playing table tennis and then continued to use them for years after for country walks etc but after some 15yrs plus, inevitably they wore and the sole cracked but the uppers were still pretty good. Recently reviving my table tennis days I was delighted to see the same shoe for sale... no hesitation went directly ahead and bought them.. Needless to say they ARE the same I cannot find any difference between new ones the ones I had previous and I am expecting another good many years wear as I had before. Plus I like the style much better than these big chunky objects you get today

I'm in the same boat as others where I bought these for badminton rather than squash and being a typical Scotsman, the lower price swayed me.As a 15 stone fella who isn't the most light footed, I was a bit concerned that because these aren't gel soled like the other pair of shoes (Asics) I was looking at, that there would be a definite comfort issue but I couldn't be more wrong. Played 70 minutes of Badminton the other day and they were light and extremely comfortable throughout. They are a bit plain compared to other badmintoning/squashing shoewear, but who cares ! These are cheaper, they fit perfectly and made dancing about on court for over an hour a joy.

Nice trainer for the price. Don't think they will fall to bits too quickly and will stay looking smart longer than most at this price (£22.10). Not for squash just for messing about when wearing shorts. Hi-Tec think EU size 46 equates to UK 12 whereas most other manufacturers equate EU 47 as a UK 12 so had to send these back and get their size 13 (EU47). The front upper of the trainer is suede which will get dirty quicker than polished leather so will only get 4 star rating. Comfortable fit with or without socks. One very minor niggle - laces are very tight in the shoe lace holes so it is annoying when trying to loosen them to put them on!
