Put on a couple of squirts of Dunhill Custom and you'd be forgiven for thinking that you'd bought Baldessarini's Ambre fragrance by mistake, so similar are they. In fact, until the dry-down, the two fragrances smell virtually identically to each other, except that Ambre is much, much stronger.The box Custom comes in rather helpfully has the notes written on the side - base notes of cedarwood and precious incense, heart notes of spicy black pepper, and top notes of crisp English apple. I can't say that the incense is particularly strong or particularly noticeable, nor is the black pepper, but better noses that mine might get a sniff of them.It's the apple and cedarwood that are the overriding smells here,which is unsurprising, given that Custom and Ambre smell so similar and apple and wood are the main constituents of both. They mix to produce a very sweet, quite thick, scent that's most definitely better for the winter months than for the summer, although you could probably get away with wearing this on a night out in August if you're careful.After the dry-down, what you're left with is a very sweet, slightly powdery aroma that reminds me of bubblegum and candy canes. That would probably put off a lot of men, but sweet smells are quite popular these days - you just have to see how well Paco Rabanne's Million is doing to realise that - and to me sweet scents are a nice a counter-balance to the insipid citrus smells that seem to be everywhere.I love Ambre and so it goes that I love this, or I would do if it wasn't for one, fatal flaw. I mentioned that Ambre is a much stronger scent, and this is where Custom falls down, as it's one of the weakest fragrances I've ever experienced, on my skin at least. Whereas I can smell Ambre for a good few hours after spraying, Custom is barely detectable after half an hour. Projection is equally bad, requiring a phenomenal number of squirts from the bottle to get anything like a good whiff of what's in the bottle. It's a shame, because at its heart Custom is definitely something worth buying.Custom is so like Ambre that it's probably not worth buying one if you have the other, unless you like blind-buying or you have a better nose than me; and, of course, there's that matter of the longevity and projection to consider. Each person's skin is different and the fragrance may react to yours better than it did to mine, and given how nice it is I still think it's worth a try if you can pick up a bottle at a good price.
