You've played Monopoly, Cluedo and Risk. You may have played Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne. Each of these games are great in their own way and are great for families to play. The latter three games are the least divisive and have many different strategies available to win which make them games you want to play again and again.Dixit is a game unlike any of these games. In fact it is unlike any other game I have ever played before or since. Each time you play the game it becomes both easier and more difficult. It's a very subtle game that pulls on your creative thinking. Trying to work out what phrase (or mime etc.) for a particular picture will spark an equal response from some of your fellow players, but crucially not all, is what makes this game challenging. Too subtle and your friends miss the connection. Too obvious and you are penalised. Please do not to let this put you off. Dixit is a game that has intrigue in every round. Trying to guess the Storyteller's card is not straight forward. Each other player gives in a card that they think best represents the given phrase and they are shuffled before being revealed. With one card per player it can be difficult to distinguish the Storyteller's cards from the charlatans. The most recent time I played there were eight of us, aged between 28 and 60. There were only five takers for the game; the remaining three were seemingly more interested with their mobile phone or tablet devices and let the rest of us play. As soon as the cards were revealed in the first round they downed their electronics and were enthralled by the game. Each of them tried to guess at the Storyteller's card and even helped their partner during the game. Much like other reviewers have said, the scoring is not the most important aspect of this game. I have never once seen an argument playing this game, and I do not expect I will. I have even played with my family who cannot get through a game of Monopoly without at least two people storming off or the board being launched at the nearest wall.Should you buy this game? If you want a game that is relaxing yet though provoking, creative while lacking a need for strategic thought and a game without conflict then this is a great game to buy. There is no game like it so it will not be in direct competition with other titles you may have. The content in the box is more than enough to fully enjoy the game for a long time so there should be no need to add the expansions for a good while yet. I would stress that this is a game best played with either five or six players. A three player game does not have quite the same feel compared to a game with at least five players.I hope this review has been helpful. If you have any comments add them. If you have any questions about the game I am more than happy to answer them as best as I can.

If you've not heard of Dixit then briefly this is how it works: You each have a hand of 6 cards, of which there are 84 in the deck, and each contains a unique piece of beautiful surrealist/quirky art. The player who's turn it is has to select one of their cards and "say something about it", which could be a single word, a phrase or sentence, a quotation from a book or film or a line of poetry... almost anything really. Other players then select a card from their hand that they think fits the description. All cards go face down and are shuffled and then laid face up on the table so that everyone can see them and secretly vote which one they think is the original card.If the player has been too obvious (so everyone guesses correctly) or too ambiguous (so noone guesses correctly) then everyone else gets the points - if he's done an intelligently thought out clue that some people have guessed and others are left in the dark, then the player and those who voted correctly, will get mega-points. AND THAT'S IT!! ^_^It really is so simple that anyone can play, regardless of age or disposition towards board games, and it is something that everyone can, and WILL, enjoy. I'm constantly taking this game around with me to people's house and I've introduced it to all my friends; so far it has a 100% awesome response. Everyone loves this game!!Now, Dixit 2 (this product) is almost a stand-alone expansion, but not quite. Basically, the scoring board, voting tiles and little wooden bunnies (to keep track of the score) are included in the base game along with the original 84 card deck. This expansion is simply another 84 card deck to give you more variety. However, I picked up Dixit 2 first before I purchased the base game, and many people do this to see if they will enjoy the game or not. This is because the expansion pack is cheaper than the base game by about £10/15 and Libellud (the makers of the game) provide downloadable scoring tracks, rules and voting tiles on their website - in fact many people buy this set and use it as a sort of "travel Dixit" to take on holiday.I thoroughly recommend this product, whether you're looking to expand you base game of Dixit with more amazingly wonderful cards, or if you're interested in this game and want to take a less-expensive plunge and give it a go with your friends. It is comfortably for 4-6 players, but can be played with 3 (with a bit of jiggery pokery) and 8 by downloading the alternative rules from Libellud's website. *RECOMMENDED*

Dixit 2 is the expansion kit for the 2010 Spiel des Jahres winning game Dixit. We have several previous winning games (Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Carcasonne, Zooloretto etc) and they are all family favourites, continually providing an enjoyable playing experience over and over again. We couldn't wait to get our hands on this years winner, but being out of stock, we bought the expansion kit. This has 84 random cards you use as the basis for the storytelling. It does not have any scoring markers or voting cards, but I don't think we've missed out on any enjoyment. We simply use a paper and pencil for scoring, and vote using playing cards.(We've downloaded the rules from the Dixit website)The fun comes in the storytelling and trying to match cards to win more points. And what fun we've had. We all play (2 adults, 9 year old and 7 year old) and get equal enjoyment out of it. My wife and I were amazed the first few times we played it at how lateral and metaphorical our kids could be.The basic game is that you each have 6 cards with random pictures. One player, the storyteller, uses a phrase to "describe" one of his / her cards, and places this face down. All other players then choose a card in their hand that could also be described by that phrase, and pass the hand to the storyteller, who shuffles the cards and places them face up for all to see. Each player (except the storyteller) then votes, secretly so as not to influence others, for the card they think is the one. Scoring depends on whether everyone picks the storyteller's card or not, and who votes for different cards. The game is fast moving enough to not get boring, and takes about 20 - 30 minutes to play. The only drawback seems to be that scoring is fairly linear, so if someone pulls out a large lead early on, it is difficult to catch up. Many other Spiel des Jahres winners have a scoring mechanism where significant points are earned at the end of the game that can overturn apparently unassailable leads.Overall, I'd highly recommend this game. We've enjoyed playing with as just adults, as a family, across three generations, and each time everyone has enjoyed it, and wanted to play again.

Dixit is an absolutely beautiful game from top to bottom, featuring a large deck of big cards, saturated with colour and charm. It's an easy game to learn, plays very quickly and manages to be non-confrontational whilst still remaining competitive. It can be played by 3 to 6 players, although I think it works best with 5 or 6.Each turn, one person will play a card face down in the middle of the table and reveal some sort of cryptic clue about it. Everyone else around the table then picks a card from their hand that best matches the same clue. Once everyone has played their cards face down, they are shuffled and revealed face up. Players will then vote on which card they think was the original and score based on whether they get it right,or if if they manage to mislead the other voters to pick their own card. This leads to some really interesting exchanges between players. The scoring system works in a way in which you want some people in the room to guess your clue right, but not everyone, meaning your clues have to not be too easy or too difficult, or target individuals in the room. Whilst this might sound like two people who know each other very well will give an unfair advantage, the amount of clues that I've seen backfire in hilarious fashion is much more than I would have imagined. For example: I was playing with my girlfriend and a few friends. I played a card with a man full of post-it notes and said the clue "The Fridge" (referring to the fridge in our flat that's covered with notes). Thinking this was fairly obvious for my girlfriend to get, whilst unlikely for anyone else to guess, somebody revealed a card that ruined my whole plan: A cat looking into a fish bowl. The way that someone had interpreted my clue and flipped it on it's head due to some imaginative thinking was incredible.. and it happens quite a lot in this game. This is again an easy recommendation from me. I play lots of different board games and this is a great social one that works well with any audience, even if they're not really into games. It plays quick, is easy to teach and is a really pretty package overall. Add it to your collection ASAP!

I watched an online show of people playing this game before buying it for my girlfriend's birthday. Normally I play games like Ticket to Ride, Zombies and Seven Wonders, so this game was completely different, but so utterly engrossing. There were five of us playing it, and I think that's probably the least number of people you'd need. We had some cultural issues, with two players being English, two being Turkish, and one Colombian, and our various relationships meaning we could target our 'storytelling' to an individual. Mind you, that's half the fun.You really need to play this game with creative and intelligent people. It's also a bit disappointing that you can only really have one layer of removal between your clue and the picture, once you go beyond that then you're really overassuming what people are able to do. There'll also be the problem of when my girlfriend and I next play this with a different group, as I presume we'll automatically be aware of what strange clues of ours can trigger the answer in the other. But we'll wait and see.I'd probably also thoroughly recommend this game to families with children of 7 and up.. in fact, just give this game to a bunch of children and see how fascinating they are.The pictures are beautiful, but they should really provide you with more picture cards. We went through (revealed) about 85% of them in our first game.

Having been brought up with miserable games like Monopoly and Cluedo, I grew to dislike board games. Having discovered other great "Spiel des Jahres" winners like Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride, I thought I would give the latest winner Dixit a try. This is a truly inspired game. It ticks all the boxes for a great game i.e. fun, ease of play, clear straightforward rules, everyone remains in the game until the end, strategic, caters for players of different age and ability, limited element of chance (no dice to roll), repeat play interest, no two game plays the same, simple scoring, game ends when all cards have been used (so no nightmare game without end such as Monopoly, Uno, Top Trumps, etc).I won't bother explaining the rules, as the full details can be found on PDF at the manufacturer's website. However, I would like to mention the wonderful artistic cards that really make the game. As well as being great to look at, the cards are very cleverly done so that each one can have a multitude of meanings.Although we love games like Carcassonne, Dixit rewards imagination as much as strategy and cunning. A wonderful family game.In fact, we have played it so much that I have just bought the Dixit 2 extension to get double the cards.

I became a fan of this whole Dixit universe mainly due to the beautifulness of the pictures on the cards. The game itself isnt anything too special, but the sole images and amount of details on them - even the boxs, I might add - look overwhelming. For this reason, I decided to get closer to it and got all 3 sets of the game (Dixit, Dixit 2 and Odyssey), and just before opening my package I was extremely excited. However, something in particular immediatly got my attention. I got very curious when I didnt see "Dixit 2" as a small box containing the 84 cards - that I was expecting to find -, and saw in its place one major 17,5cm x 19,5cm x 12,5cm box. Upon opening this box,I noticed that inside of it there were not 1, but 12 smaller boxes, each of them containing the expected pack of 84 cards, that would make the Dixit 2 installment. Thats 12 times the same 84 cards, for a total of 1008 cards (repeated, but still) and for the price of just one.Now I can marvel enough at the amazingness of these games, since I wont be running short on cards anytime soon LOL.Not that Im complaining or anything, but thats obviously a minus to the seller. As for the item itself, "Thank you very much" to whoever gave it to the world.

A very fun, bluffing game for all the family.Everyone starts off with some fantastically drawn cards in their hands. The person who's starts is the Storyteller, who selects one of their cards, and places it face down. They also say a word, sentence or even a sound effect that is associated with that card. The rest of the players then choose a card from their hand that may also be associated with that word, sentence or sound effect. They then hand their card (hidden from all!) to the Storyteller, who shuffles all these cards, and places them face up, in a row, for all to see.Everyone knows which card THEY contributed, but they don't know which card is the Storyteller's - the idea is that all the cards that are on display could be a potential candidate.Points are scored depending on who guess what. If you've played Fibbage (by JackBox) then you will be very familiar with the mechanics of this game. The more you play, the better everyone will be at describing their images, and leading everyone astray. Also, the more players that are involved, the more enjoyable the game is. Four really is the minimum.Very enjoyable, very easy to get into, and loads of fun. Recommended.

For those people who love a good bluffing game, akin to Balderdash or Apples to Apples then this is the game for you!Essentially each player has 6 cards (from a pack of about 100), and each card is a beautifully drawn, mind melting picture (man eating handbag, chicken police squad, etc) which has so much detail it could be about anything! When it's your turn, your task is to make up a sentence/ phrase/ sound that best describes one of your chosen crazy picture cards. Each other player uses your sentence to help them pick one of their cards that could also describe one of their cards and places it in the middle. You then shuffle the cards each player has given then turn them over. You then all each guess which was the original card that the original sentence described. The aim is to not to be too obvious (if everyone guesses your card, you get 0 points, everyone else gets 3) or too obscure (if no-one gets it you, again, get 0 points and everyone gets 3). It's about getting that perfect balance. Other players also score if people choose their card - similar to Balderdash.Amazing game, encourages creative thinking. Perfect for Christmas family gatherings!!

We were introduced to Dixit by a friend and decided to buy our own copy as we’re a family who enjoy board games. The game itself is straightforward, but the scoring system can be a little cumbersome and has required a few re-reads of the scoring instructions. Each player is dealt a number of cards, the storyteller describes their card using a sentence, noise or a little story, everyone else chooses a card which closely matches the story told, all cards are handed to the storyteller who shuffles, places and then everyone needs to guess which card belonged to the storyteller. What we did find, was that playing together as a family (myself and my two daughters)is that we know eachother incredibly well so we always guessed the right card, which makes it a super straightforward game. When we introduce other people to the game, it’s much more fun since they have really different ideas - but it makes for a more competitive game with other players.Overall, we do love it and play it regularly. The illustrations are beautiful and often spin off conversations which make gameplay seem a lot longer, but, the family who communicates stay together, right?

We played the Dixit game with friends and really fell in love with it.Consequently we bought the game for ourselves and had hours and hours of joy playing it with different people. They all loved it ,too and bought us an extension card set for us,too. We have now bought the Original game and an extension set for friends because we are moving away, and they loved playing it so much ! It is one of these games where it doesn't matter if one wins- it's mostly about the fun playing it.It is played in the round,so everybody picks a card and tells a clue about it..then the Others try and find a card on their hand to match the clue and pass it on to the One whose turn it is.Then all the cards are laid out in the middle and the players guess which was the original card...The game challenges your fantasy, it brings you lots of fun,and the time passes far too quickly while you are having fun with your friends or family. We can both highly highly recommend it ! The delivery was very very quick, too.

A lovely board game for families and storytellers, Dixit presents itself as one of the best looking board games I own. The interior of the box itself is used as the board where you travel around its rim. The pieces are lovely wooden rabbits and the cards each present themselves as works of art. The only problem I have with this game is that once you have used all the cards a few times the game can get a bit boring. I will soon buy / make some more cards and have since found ways to make the gameplay more interesting. Our family now plays specific games where you can only play a piece of music or play a video clip that best represents the chosen picture. The way the game works is that you the storyteller tells a story, then every player hands the storyteller a card that best matches that story, then play continues clockwise. A well designed and creative game that is presented beautifully.5*s

It's nice to have a game that can be played with a larger number of players and the pictures on the cards are unique and interesting. There are so many different things on each of the cards that you inevitably miss something the first time you play. It works well with a variety of different ages of players and as long as you can find a word or phrase that is relevant but not too obvious or obscure to your card, it makes it an interesting and inspiring game to play.I am looking forward to getting expansion packs soon to have different cards to play with, but as long as you're not playing it solidly every night for a year with the same group of people, the original game won't become boring as you'll inevitably forget about certain cards in the original pack until you see them again, and everyone picks out different things from different cards to describe them.

I bought this for my family having read a positive review in The Guardian before Christmas. It turned out to be the "hit" present of the year. The game itself is remarkably simple and relies on an element of lateral thinking and creativity on the part of the "story teller", having to describe a picture so that some (and here's the clever bit!) but not all, players will guess the correct image. At first it seems quite an odd premise, but soon becomes tremendous fun and rather addictive. The cards themselves are delightful and the whole package both sturdy but quite unique. This game has proved a hit at dinner parties and can be played by older children and adults together.Very original - it is amazing how you can get a very different game out of the same images! I can certainly see why this game won awards.

This game is one exquisite piece of art in addition to its fun and brainstorming value. Great with both family & friends i always have a blast playing it. Cards may need some sleeving since they are huge and could bend bad and wear off quickly. Replay value comes with expansions as you can get up to 4x84=336 different cards and mix and match them as you like so a single card could hardly come twice in subsequent games. It never gets old as you can always try to create dozens of alternative descriptions for a single card as it pushes you to think, be creative and be logical with your associations. It works with all kinds of groups, with its 2 min explain the rules time its great gateway card game, superb party game and all in all if i have to give hint words they are "A picture can tell thousand stories".
