It's great that Amazon offers so many choices within almost any category of interest. I wanted a birding scope for field scanning and good magnification on target, understanding that this would require the use of a stable tripod. Scanning at 20X was great for distance (I estimate perhaps a quarter mile in this case) though not practicable within a close field. Full zoom to 60X magnifies atmospheric interference correspondingly and I could not get a really sharp image at such a distance even on a crisp September day.Specifically, a very patient bald eagle, perched on the chimney of an abandoned building (Manana Island, off Monhegan, midcoast Maine) was barely visible to the naked eye but easy to find at 20X.Zooming to 60X was difficult and disappointing: yes, the eagle stayed put and occupied more of the field of view but the zoom control grip was extremely stiff and the fine focus adjustment did not improve resolution. On the other hand, once you've got it stabilized and looking at stuff larger and slower than a bird, it's a great instrument.I have returned this scope because for my purposes it is too cumbersome for convenient use (16 inches and five pounds?). Coarse and fine focussing knobs are properly related but you'll have to teach your hand how to find them while manipulating your view and you'll also have to buy a wrench to shift the zoom grip.Amazon was prompt in accepting this return for full credit minus about $10 for customer dissatisfaction postage, a bargain for the experience.

I took delivery of this spotting scope just a few days ago, so I have not had the opportunity to field test it properly yet. I have done a little local viewing and everything looks great. Colours are very true with no ringing or colour banding. Focusing is very smooth. Zoom is a little stiff but I'm sure it will loosen up a little. Will go to Olango bird sanctuary just outside Cebu, Philippines in a couple of weeks to try it out thoroughly, then it's off to Mai Po reserve in Hong Kong to give it a good work out. It came with a hard case that is a bit bulky so have ordered a soft case that will be easier to lug around.Decided to buy a decent all metal tripod soon (Giottos MTL9271B 3 Section Aluminium Professional Tripod with SLIK SH707E Head). One thing I have noticed and this is VERY important is the fact that my one at least is focusing down to 12 feet and not the 35 feet that is described in the listing. This is very good news. I am so pleased that I purchased this scope.Update (28-08-2011): Field tested the scope at Olango Bird Sanctuary and it carried itself impeccably. I was able to easily make out all the intricate markings on an adult Asiatic Dowitcher. The image was bright, even at 60X magnification. I was even able to follow a Gull Billed Tern in flight with no problems.

Real nice ED lens Spotting Scope for a reasonable price of around $400. Rubber coated and has ED glass objective lens for sharp details with less distortion than regular optical glass lenses. Has non-interchangeable zoom lens that goes from 20 to 60x. Has good eye relief and scope feels well made. Light gathering of 80mm objective lens is excellent. Looked at full moon on cloudless night and details were sharp and there was none to little color distortion of moon's rim. Has an attached movable rubberized lens hood and stacked adjustment knobs which provide excellent general & fine tune focus adjustments. Comes with a nice semi-hard case. Great scope and all you will need for terrestrial viewing and Moon as well as making out the inner planets. For a more detailed viewing of the planets you will need a telescope with more magnification power and better light gathering ability of at least a 90mm ED objective lens. The Televue 85mm telescope however is able to give you decent views of the inner planets as well as good views of the huge gas giants Jupiter & Saturn but will cost you around $2500 complete. The Bushnell Legend 80mm for the money is just one nice premium scope.

Most of the reviews for this product were from firing range users, and I wanted to put my 2 cents in as an avid birder. For the price, you can't beat this scope. I considered buying a Kowa scope which would have been $500 more, but I cannot imagine the quality would be much better for any other scope in this price range without shelling out $2k for a Swarovski. I was a little tentative since Bushnell binocular optics are not super sharp as far as I am concerned (I have Zeiss binos which are awesome!), but the image quality on this scope is fantastic. It weighs 5lbs so YOU NEED A STURDY TRIPOD... But any serious photographer would already have one, and any serious birder should consider photography (at least for accurate identification).Zoom ring works great and does not shake or change what you are looking at IF YOU HAVE A STURDY TRIPOD or just know how to use optics. I even zoomed into a seabird burrow 1/2 mile offshore using the hood of my car as a balance no problem just to test it out. If you want a scope for birds and don't want to shell out for Swarovski, this is the way to go.

I just received this and will put this to use in both birding and on the rifle range. Quick note that it DOES NOT COME with a tripod. The 60mm version apparently does. I will update this with more after I put it through the paces. Now, I need a tripod...UPDATE: 7/25/2011I purchased the Alpen Micro Adjustable Tripod: [...] to go with this scope. I will have a separate review on that tripod. I have attached it and it seems great.I have found, after purchasing the Alpen tripod, that Alpen makes a remarkably similar scope (if not identical) and I am wondering how much branding I am paying for. I understand you also get the company behind the scope and I think you should look into this scope as analternate to this one as you research: [...]Perhaps a reader of this review could chime in with a comment as to the differences. I will have more detail on this scope as I put it through its paces.

I use this for target shooting with a variety of calibers and ranges. Prior to making this purchase I bought several "cheap" branded spotting scopes (Barska, Simmons, and returned them all - beyond 40x or so they were useless. I couldn't see .22 caliber holes in paper even at 50 yards. The glass on this scope is quite good. It's bright and clear even in bad light. The view at max magnification is bright and clear. I do most of my shooting at 100-200 yards, and I can clearly see holes in plain white paper at 200 yards no problem with this scope.Overall I would say this is a super value for the money. It performs like the more expensive brands. Maybe it doesn't look as cool as a high-end Vortex or Leupold, but that doesn't concern me. The ability to see holes in paper at a distance does, and this scope does it well.

We bought this scope because we couldn't afford the better ones, so we were anxious about its quality. Now we are shocked that we got so much for the money. We use our scope for birding. It is great to see the birds at 2,3,or 4 times the magnification of the binoculars. The image is clean and bright. As with any scope, the higher the magnification the smaller the image so we use it in the 20 to 40 x range and find it exceeds our expectations. It comes with a tripod and carrying case which the product info did not lead us to expect: 2 more big pluses. There is nothing else on the market that compares in quality with this spotting scope for this money.(We ordered from the discount supplier which undercut the Amazon price by $70 and received the product in 4 days).

I got this spotting scope after almos 2 month of research and nine years of experience with scopes, I whent all the way from spotting scope to telescope, and the goal was to spot a .223 or 5.56 bullet at 500 yards, and this scope does tha job with no problems and with the most sharp image you could see. For $400.00 includding delivery this is the best deal out there. You can just compare this quality with Leica or Swarovski but almost $1,200.00 less than those. So I will recomend you to don't waist more time looking around and get this one, you won't be desapointed.

Really pleased with this product, I use this at the range at 1-3 hundred yards shooting 243-308 rds, & with the proper lighting behind target I have no problems seeing the holes. I find that if your backer has an area cut out just large enough to allow the target to be stapled over it this really helps in seeing those holes at say 2-3 hundred yards. I have owned a few other brand scopes that have claimed to be what this scope is but they weren't even close to the clarity of this bushnell for the money.Glad I gave it a try!

This scope is so good i cant explain it. Where to begin.......lets start with the fine focusing knob, so that when your digiscoping you can get the fine detail in there. HOW ABOUT THE 80MM LENS SO THAT LOTS OF LIGHT COMES IN FOR A OUTSTANDING VIEW. Who wants to pay $1000 or more just to have a fancy scope? This scope is just as good so dont waste your time and money and get this great scope, you wont be disappointed.

Really enjoying this. With some long range viewing of mountain topis and the like, it's hard to tell if I should get a crisper focus, but works well. It could be my slightly out of focus eyesight. I took a photo by placing my Samsung Galaxy 5 over the eyepiece and it was okay. Not great, but okay. A little clumsy for sure. Still, for viewing within a couple hundred yards, great clarity.

This superb spotting scope has made my wildlife viewing so much more interesting and rewarding. For example, I watched 6 wolves (3 pups and 3 yearlings) from a distance of about 800 to 1000 yards through the scope - and was able to see what they were doing. The scopes relatively heavy weight works to the advantage of the user since it is less likely to shake when there is wind.

I bought it for long range shooting to see my .308Win holes at 300m. And it works fine. Of course, identifying bullet holes (on black targets) at a that distance in 300m is quite heavy (or nearly impossible) but in combination with splatter targets it is working great!!! I think there is no scope in that price range which could deal with that scope.

I am so satisfied with this spotting scope. It's main use will be whale watching as I on the pacific coast of Ecuador. I have been using it on passing ships and find I can see clearly. The season starts in late May or June I am told and this spotting scope will get many hours of use.

It should have A very stout tripod advertised with it. It is so high powered it is very hard to find A tripod to go with this product. I was thinking of A tripod that survey people use but I do not know if the adaptor would work. If anybody has any tips I would sure like to know.
