I must confess, while I waited for this product to be delivered I did find myself questioning my own motives for actually purchasing it. The intended recipients were my two little home-educated relatives, aged seven and four, for whom I had already shelled out serious hard-earned for several of the other different versions of this game. No sooner had the 'Order Acknowledgement' appeared did I begin to wonder just how pretentious I myself might appear while standing on their doorstep clutching this product. More to the point, was my rather pathetic 'C' grade in my French O'Level a hundred and fifty years ago going to be enough to see me taking on the somewhat Pied-Piper-like persona that wouldbe needed to lead my two little friends through this box?These games work by having double-sided cards. The information, in this case 'Animaux', that is supposed to be memorised is on one side and the questions relating to those data are on the other. From previous experience, we have always worked through the cards in a non-competitive way, since the very nature of there only being ten seconds in which to remember all this stuff seems to throw the children into a complete tizzy. And that's nothing compared to the moods we get if an answer is ever (God forbid) 'wrong'. We work in a much more relaxed way, allowing our rather diminutive but expert witness to have the card visible to her as the inquisitor gets to work.In this case, I was really rather glad that we DO do it like that for, while the information relating to les 'Animaux' themselves is reasonably straightforward, the questions on the back were totally beyond me. Oh, I had the Charles Aznavour accent alright... but appearances were totally deceptive. Thankfully, my two little colleagues were able to prise each card from my hand before the shock and embarrassment completely overwhelmed me and rigor mortis set in and only then did I feel in some way vindicated for the purchase of this game. Without my help (which was minimal to say the least... and even that's being generous) the two girls began to ask their OWN questions of each other with regard to each creature. In English, admittedly, but I think in some ways that is even more impressive, since the answers they were looking for were still all in French. In the same way that we adults have adapted the rules of the game in order to make it more 'user-friendly', so the kids themselves managed to hit upon a fantastic game which was way beyond anything any of us could ever have thought up. Not only that, but a new language has been introduced into their lives in a very innocuous yet extremely entertaining way. Personally speaking, I think they were rather taking the mickey out of my own French accent. But if I sound even half as good as they do, who cares?
