One word - avoid. We were left stranded last weekend on the way back from the alps. They do not work on an incline with an inch of wet snow on the road. Only chains or winter tyres will do - and having watched several cars crash around us, chains need to be on all 4 wheels otherwise you'll fish tail going down hill and end up sideways and off the road. Add a bit of camber to the road on a down hill section and you are doomed. Rear wheel drive cars were particularly scary, even with chains on their rear wheels - zero grip on the front so no braking or steering - on a mountain road. Yikes!
