Q: “Give an example of something lost for want of a proverbial ha’porth of tar?”A: “Top Trumps Pub Quiz”This is a potentially fun card-based quiz game from “Top Trumps”. 500 questions on 100 subject cards, with each card divided into five categories – Music, Film and TV, Sport, Science and History, and General Knowledge. Some real effort has gone into creating questions that really will appeal across ages (well, teens up maybe), questions that are not stupidly hard, or stupidly easy. Really good trivia questions, in other words. But having gone to all that effort it is apparent that – perhaps at the last minute – the publishers realised they had not written any rules,so it appears spent about two minutes knocking something out on the back of the proverbial cig packet. So, the rules that come with the game sort of work (but mainly sort of don’t), sort of make sense, (but mainly sort of don’t). What was the point of having five subject categories on each card if you are then told to ignore them and read from top to bottom (for example)?Top Tip – ignore the rules and maybe just play it like Top Trumps! Get player one to choose a category on the first card – if one of you gets it right and one gets it wrong then one of you wins the card, if it’s a tie choose another category. And so on until someone wins the card. Just like you used to when you were asking about maximum speeds and most goals and all the stuff you used to do when you were about 10 and Top Trumps was a big thing in your life.Or devise some other set of rules. Really you cannot do worse than the official ones. Its probably half the fun!Oh – and Top Tip 2. It does help if you read the carefully the card that shows through the box when it arrives. The one that tells you how to actually open the box. It’s not obvious how to do this and reading these instructions will avoid you looking a total idiot as you spend 10 minutes with a varied and growing pile of ever sharper implements (followed by yet more bandages and plasters) attempting to break in.

When my children were growing up I always had a pack of top trumps cards in my handbag. They were in a small enough box to keep in my handbag and kept them together and tidy and I knew that if I was in need of a distraction while waiting in a queue or at an appointment or on a long car journey I was able to quickly get them involved in a game, while also teaching them great facts, and while younger a great way to practice reading and numbers. When I saw this quiz game I knew it was going to be great. Again made by the company behind the fantastic top trumps card games it is a great subject for chidlren (and adults) to enjoy and a game that can be played anywhere.I don;t think that this is going to be as easy to drop into a handbag - although the case is well designed as it is designed to be put between two players and each player has a dispenser for the cards - the cards could be taken out of the box and taken out and about. There are 500 questions within the cards - Players from across the generations are included in the pack and each card has five questions and answers (on opposite sides of each card) about one player. The questions are easy enough for fans of any age to answer. The cards are great quality and will not damage too easily. There are footballers from the past and present and from across the world included in these cards. Each player has their own card. There are so many possibilities to how these cards can be used and I really think they are a great idea. Perfect to give as a gift to a child or Football loving adult alike. Great for those who enjoy setting quizes or for a family get together as there is something for all ages.I was also able to get a Disney Movies game set to review too - between the two sets there is something for everyone!

Star Wars and trivia equals a winner, all packaged in a neat little case. What more can you want? Well, you could want to know "Who stood to the right of Bobba Fett on the bridge of the super star destroyer?". The questions in this game go from stupidly hard to easy peasy or vice versa... "Fun it is" - Yoda (would say if he'd played the game of course). Between my group of friends, who are all super geeky, we really enjoyed the questions. There are 5 questions on each of the cards, which relate to the person or ship printed on the card. 1 is easy, up to 5 which is more obscure or tricky. The game is played with 2 players (or 2 teams for a group game)having 5 cards each and the aim is to take all the cards from the other player (or group). You start with question 1 on the card, asking your opponent the question, then they ask their question, until one of you answer incorrectly or cannot answer... the losing person then has to pass their card to the other player (or team). If you answer all 5 questions correctly, you both have to place both cards in the middle of the playing area, until one of you gets one wrong, then both cards are passed to the winning player, until one player has all the cards. For a longer game, you can just take extra cards from the deck. Oh and it is IG-88 for those who didn't know the answer to the question above :)

Very fun to play in two teams (the more the merrier per team), but it's not exactly like the 'old' Top Trumps that I used to play as a kid.The rules are still simple: Each teams selects five cards, and then asks questions to the opposing team. There's 5 questions per card and you always start with question 1. Team A asks Team B question 1, and vice versa. If both teams answer correctly, they move onto question 2, and so on... this keeps going until one teams loses a pair of questions (e.g. team A gets question 4 correct, but team B gets question 4 wrong. Team A wins that set). This process is repeated until one team wins three sets, and therefore wins the round. (You can then play a second round using the same cards, but they're reshuffled meaning you could lockout and use your short-term memory!)There's an abundance of cards so these game will last a while, and my friends and family and I have had a great time chilling at home playing this.As a minor grumble; the typography is a little tiny and hard to read, so wear your glasses. And note that the box if pretty big, so it's not as pocket-sized as the original style Trumps... consider it more one for the house or holidays.Definitely recommended, though!

We loved this new Top Trumps branded animals quiz, with two reservations - 1/ it isn't Top Trumps in any way that I'd recognise them, other than the branding and card size & 2/ the rules of the game itself weren't intuitive or easy to follow in a fun way.However. Taken for what it is, which is a double-deck of two-sided cards, with questions about different animals on one side and their respective answers on the other, this is a load of fun for a family to sit around playing, especially inquisitive young children. When used simply as a quiz to play between parents and kids, this is a great set. There are TONS of questions and facts here, and although some facts are more tenuous than other and not all particularly educational, the volume means that there's still loads to learn and talk about. For any families with children on the autistic spectrum particularly, you'll recognise a game here that certain children might respond really well to, learning facts by rote and reciting them at regular opportunities. And for me, personally, I found it a relief that this wasn't another traditional deck of Top Trumps cards, because that's a game I bore of playing with my children very quickly!

Firstly, this is very different to top trumps. It’s a quiz game with no element of the cards having scores or beating each other in different categories. My kids really love the scores and stats aspect of top trumps so seeing that lacking was disappointing for them and if you’re expecting something similar to traditional top trumps you may be disappointed, HOWEVER it is a nicely done quiz game. I really like the box format which is very compact. It’s double the size of a regular top trumps box and opens on both sides. There are rules included for a quiz game or the “twist” is a memory quiz game.I would say you / your kids need to be quite a dedicated wwe fan to know all the answers though. My boys are into it to the extent that we have wwe figures, and they know a few of the characters but not all, and they struggled with these questions, whereas they would have engaged more with the traditional top trumps format that would have allowed them to pick up more knowledge and get more familiar. For a bigger wwe fan though it would be ideal. I do like the format and will be checking to see if there are other versions like football, which my kids would manage better in the quiz

There's a lot of content in this small Top Trump sized box. Each side has fifty cards, each with five questions on. Each card covers trivia from an animated Disney film with a single card for the last popular films (e.g The Aristocats) and up to three cards for the most popular (and usually more recent films).Questions for the Pixar movies are included, however no live action films are, so when asking questions for Disney films remade in to live action ones (Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast etc), ensure everyone understands which film is featured in the quiz. There's a really good variety and although Disney buffs will feel the smuggest, anyone can play, even to learn some trivia about the films they might have seen many years ago (clearly I mean the parents/guardians).The case both protects and stores the cards which are glossy. The text is large enough, white on blue, better than some of the other Top Trumps products available right now.Overall, a good well thought out trivia game, bound to delight the Mouse fans and varied enough to cover all bases. Plus, it's quite timeless, even if the fun is short lived, it can come out time and time again.

First up - this is not the traditional top trumps - and doesn't have any stats on the cards. Imagine the questions from Trivial Pursuit if they did an "animal edition", but organised so all the questions on one card are for that given animal. And basically that's what you have. But without the game board or any major game mechanic. So it's probably a game to play in the car or something. It could get boring after a while, especially if you're a parent being forced to play it with a child. There'sI'm confused - "Top trumps quiz - with a twist", or is it, "Quiz, top trumps, with a twist". I'm not seeing a twist. I'm just seeing a quiz. The instructions say this: "round 2: the twist" and then go on to describe using the same cards you picked but shuffling them and asking the same questions again but seeing if anyone was paying attention. Really? How is that a twist? That's just repetition. Apparently you should "feel your mind twist and turn"...you're joking right? Who writes this stuff?Anyway bottom line is, you get a LOT of quiz cards in this set, so however you want to play, twist or not, it's quiz material for hours or days.

If you are a fan of trivial pursuit, pub quizzes at your local boozer or simply like general knowledge games, then Top Trumps Pub Quiz is definitely one to add to your collection. The game consists of a neatly designed-to-look-like-a-beer-glass plastic box with flap out sides that hold two packs of cards. These cards are printed with 500 questions in assorted genres from sport through history and many many more. The questions are printed on one side of the card and the answers are printed on the reverse.Herein lies my only complaint: due to squeezing so much printing onto each card you'll really need your glasses or a magnifying glass to read them!On the whole though the game is nicely made, the cards well printed and the whole thing nicely finished. Also at the price of under a tenner that, to my mind, is pretty good value. As for the rules, well like many quiz type games; they are almost up to you. There are some basic guidelines for playing the game and how you answer the questions but it's all down to you in the long run.Overall a pretty good brain teasing collection.

The questions on this top trump game are great and manage to cater for a wide range of interests and ages, though some questions are adult in nature, so this isn't one for the kids! The whole thing is packaged in a container that is supposed to resemble a pint glass and it's a novel idea. Both sides open out to show 100 cards, 50 on each side as well as a card with the rules on. You can keep the cards in the box and pull them out as necessary. Each card then has an overall theme on top and then 5 questions on a range of subjects from sports to TV and history to do with that theme, all shown with an icon to denote the subject. The rules are far too simple, though, and tell you to use the cards by reading the first question first and then going down the card. This means some questions may never be read out, so we like to mix it up by asking for a subject choice from the list. Once you get a set of rules sorted this is great fun to play through and easy to carry to other places and share.

This is well-designed, opening on two sides to allow each of two teams to access cards from their side. The questions (UK-based) are wide-ranging and, we thought, often quite tough. They suit all ages from teenage, we’d say, with everything from Harry Potter (I had no chance) to history. Teenagers might prefer to avoid the “Sex” questions during a game involving their parents! Take a look at the pictures in the listing for an idea of what to expect. You can play a game according to the rules (question master not required, everyone plays) but we enjoyed just appointing a question master and letting a roomful of people try and answer questions between them. That meant everyone could sit back comfortably. It triggered a lot of interesting debate and was quite educational. This is the sort of game you can pick up and play for 5 minutes, but you can also get serious with a much longer session. We like it and rate it pretty good value for the current £9.99.

The 100 cards are a nice format to have cards in; it's easier than with a quiz book to shuffle for variety, or put some separate to use for a quiz. Each card brings together five questions around a particular topic (a few examples: Politics, Reality TV, Currencies, Alcohol), although the topics are pretty loosely interpreted. (Currencies: "In which year did ABBA release 'Money, Money, Money'?"). The answers are of course on the reverse of each card. There is a card with detailed guidelines on how to run a quiz game - keeping score by putting pairs of cards to one side if one team answers more than the other. The plastic holder/dispenser seems to me pretty useless; it's actually a shade fiddlier than getting the cards in and out of a stout cardboard box, which would have done fine. It's not particularly suitable for a Pub Quiz in the traditional sense, but for a small group to play amongst themselves sat at a table in a pub it could work quite well.

This is a great present for anyone who loves World Wrestling Entertainment. This red plastic box contains at least twice as many cards as a traditional Top Trumps deck, with each side flapping out to reveal half the set of cards. If you try and use the box on an uneven surface, or on a train you're likely to find you drop cards. In terms of gameplay this bears little resemblance to a standard game of Top Trumps, and I think this is its biggest weakness. Top Trumps is a great game for people of all ages and you can quickly dive in and enjoy a game. This Quiz game is harder to dive into, it is all about learning the facts on the cards - hence the reason I think it would really appeal to someonewho loves WWE wrestling.Because this game rewards an investment of time and energy remembering the information it creates an opportunity for a parent to bond with their children - great if you can bring yourself to do it.

I've previously reviewed the Star Wars quiz game and I'm glad to say that this game has none of the (small) flaws of that set of quiz cards. Animals offer a fantastic opportunity to engage both adults and children alike. Each card has five questions, which are short, well phrased and vary between multiple choice and standard responses. Each card is specific to the picture and title, so the Giant Panda card has five questions about that animal.A card includes the quiz rules, although my children preferred (7,9) preferred that I host the quiz challenge. It's not really important which rules you follow or make up, the quiz is great fun either way.The box is a great way to keep the cards stored and in good condition, whilst also facilitating play for head to head games.A winner to pass the time both at home, on holiday or at rest stops whilst traveling. Recommended.
