So, I bought one of these back in March 2012 and today (15th Dec) it broke. I have used it since then so it has survived 287 days (9 months 12 days). In its final moments I got a bit fed up of the plastic casing falling apart so I took it off completely and exposed the PCB. Eventually the solder to the USB connector snapped but I'm kind of to blame for that :P Anyway, this worked perfectly fine on Windows 7, Ubuntu 11.04 and Fedora 17. There is an annoying brief click/pop at startup when it powers up. The price is excellent and it's a great solution for someone who just busted their laptop (motherboard soldered) headphone line-out and can't go a day without audio.I received this in good time (2 days if I remember correctly). I didn't ever use the line-in port so I can't say how well that worked. Perfectly adequate for my speakers and headphones though. This product is for people who don't have a sound card or ruined their built-in one and are looking for a cheap (and portable) fix (and have a spare USB port not in use). The sound quality is just as good as I had when I was using the built in headphone socket.NOTE: there seem to be variants of this card on Amazon. I got this one, but you may be able to find an even cheaper one.RECOMMENDATION: To prevent the plastic falling apart (might happen after a month or so of plugging/unplugging) turn up the volume buttons and turn off mute, then remove the buttons and wrap the thing in insulation tape. Alternatively, you could super glue the top and bottom halves together but you might find the buttons slip inside the case and mute it so maybe don't do that. If you're using a desktop, set it up where it won't be knocked and it should last you much longer. If using a laptop, it is a little wide but does not totally restrict usage of adjacent USB ports. Don't put too much bending force on it or you may find that the case becomes fragile or the USB connector breaks off.Again, great little lifesaver and worth every penny!!!

My Dell Laptop headphone socket has come loose inside & no longer works, although the main speakers still work OK. I looked on the net for a fix and it appears Dell say a new motherboard is needed. I didn't want to pull the laptop apart to try and fix it myself in case I damaged something and made things worse. Fleabay has poor reviews with USB Sound Cards (hiss & over heating) but I decided to take a chance with THT Trade on Amazon (1226 7.1 Channel USB External Sound Card Audio Mic Adapter USB £[]). I ordered the card Sunday & the item was delivered two days later. I plugged it into the USB port and the drivers were automatically installed (Win XP Pro).I played a music file and the onboard speakers were automatically disabled and my headphones worked brilliantly - no hiss, crackle or distortion. This USB card has a volume control built in but it's not needed because the speaker icon near the clock on my desktop works the USB card volume when it's plugged in, and it works the onboard speakers when the USB card is pulled out. If you disconnect this USB card part way through playing a Youtube video file the onboard speakers do not automatically come on, you have to start the music/video file again (but this is no problem). THT Trade give a 12 month warranty (which I hope I will not need). The card has a microphone socket which I have not tested, but I don't need either. I have not tested the card with external speakers - I only wanted a fix for the headphone socket and this card does that perfectly!UPDATE - nearly 4 years later (Jan 2015 now) and this USB card still works perfectly - it's used at least 6 days a week with Youtube & my mp3's on the laptop.

like many people, on my old lap top the headphone jack was the first thing to go. I previously purchased the dynamode version of this which is about half the price and wasn't impressed at all. I started looking for something better and saw some good reviews on this. While sceptical, at only an extra couple of quid it's still very cheap so I gave it a go.It plugs and plays and produces sound. On speakers there is a slight background hum, but nothing too annoying and you only notice it when the music isn't on, with headphones I had no problems. I've known many speakers that produce worse hum anyway, so that hum isn't enough to bother me. Sound quality otherwise all OK.The microphone jack also works and I can't tell any difference in quality to the built in mic jack point. The buttons all work fine, and while I won't be using them as they are awkward to get hold of, it all works as advertised.Compared to the dynamode one we are looking at a 1000% improvement for twice the price, so well worth the extra couple of quid. Time will tell on reliability, but if you too a have dodgy headphone jack and need some sound, you can do a lot worse than this and at the price , well worth a 5 stars.

I was in two minds about ordering this device as several of the existing reviewers comment about the poor construction and way that the cover falls apart. This was to replace the on-board sound card on my PC which Linux doesn't love, so I figured I'd be safe. I'd plug it in and leave it attached 24x7 - so there should be little wear and tear.I plugged the device in, attached my speakers, and suddenly Debian Squeeze started to produce music. All is good. Quality seems fine, certainly no PSU-related hiss or similar. The only warning I'd add to the others is that the device is wide. If you have two USB-sockets close together then chances are you won't be able to fit it if you're using the other.I solved that problem with a small USB extension cable. As others noted when the device is playing there is a flashing LED which you might find distracting. Given that mine is attached at the back of my PC, as a permanent replacement for the on-board sound, I neither see this nor are bothered by it.

Arrived early as most Amazon orders seem to do.I could'nt get it to work at first (input was fine but output did not) and a replacement was issued by the trader within 24 hours of notification. It turned out that I had messed up the sound settings of my OS (kubuntu 11.04) and clearing the settings sorted it so it was nothing to do with the equipment so as both worked I have decided to keep them both - they're cheap enough.Very good sound quality for the money both input and output. Normally connecting the headphone socket of a low-end laptop to an external amp produces a lot of interference - I believe from the HDD.Using this it's crystal clear. The equipment is to be recommended - 5 stars and the seller equally for all the help they gave me

Like most of the reviewers here, I had a little accident with my laptop's headphone socket making listening to music quite literally a balancing act. I was sceptical about how well this would work for such a low price, but it does the job very well indeed. I can't say I can really hear the '7.1 virtual surround' this is supposed to provide, but that is neither here nor there. If you have damaged your headphone socket on your PC or laptop then get one of these, it's exactly what you need.

Excellent value for money - fairly small in size. If your USB ports are very close together you may have an issue plugging anything into the next port.Plugged into my ubuntu 10.04 64bit server and worked straight away - nothing required, no setup etc.Sounds ok - perfect for task.

Considering H.P.wanted £200 to replace the internal sound card on my PC, this is an excellent product, just a bit of crackling when I turn the machine on, but superb sound.

3.11.2012

Excellent. Did the job for a very good price. My speakers stopped working and I could not get sound card working and this was the solution.

11.12.2011
