I've been a bass player for a long time. Owned higher end Fenders and Rickenbacker, then took a long hiatus from music due to work and school. I do electronics and light luthier work on my instruments to keep them in tip top shape. It came time for me to buy a new bass and all of the used ones I came across the sellers prices were ridiculous for what they had. I looked into Squier because I've been a Fender bass fan since I started as a teenager. I really wanted to know what the differences were between this Affinity Squier and the entry level Fender Player series.I found out that the bodies are both made of alder, same fretboard radius, string spacing, the only difference is that this model uses an Indian Laurel fingerboard, and the Fender uses rosewood. The only major difference is the pickups, as the Fender uses Alnico 5 pickups and this model uses standard jazz pickups. Out of the box the bass needed a setup. Fender has a great page with information to set your bass up. Mine needed a truss rod adjustment pretty bad, then setting the action, pickup height, and intonation. After I did all of this the bass played excellent.I plugged into my amp and was really surprised by the sound and tone of the instrument after the setup. I wasn't expecting much from the pickups, but they really sound great! I was planning on switching them out for some Dimarzios down the road, but I don't think I'm going to. There wasn't significant hum from the pickups, and I was able to get a wide variety of tones from it. I'll put on some flat wound strings in the future, but for now I'll run the stock round wounds until they start to lose their sound. Also I want to add in that the low B string sounds superb! I read some other reviews of people complaining about how they couldn't get a good sound from the lower notes on the B, but I didn't have this problem at all. I want to stress that getting this setup as soon as you get it is key to getting the right sound from this instrument. That way you can dial in everything and get your pickup height right bringing you a great tone.I'm really happy with my purchase and feel like I'll keep this bass for years. The actual body itself is made from the same wood as the fender, the electronics are slightly different but super easy to change out. I just couldn't justify paying more money for practically the same instrument. I think this is a solid buy, and so much value for the money you spend. You really can't go wrong with this bass. Squier has become a really great brand over the years, and this is an exceptional instrument.

The guitar looks and feels awesome out of the box. Bought Used-Like New, with package damage listed as only issue, actually had small chip on back of body. Not an issue, as the price was still very fair for such a small bit of damage ($100 off or so), but I mention for other buyers. That’s on Amazon anyway, not Squier. As far as the guitar, I am taking a star for the action height, but otherwise it’s perfect for my needs (learning to play 5 strings). I know 5 string basses need a little more room, but even at the lowest saddle setting, with them flat against the bridge plate, the action is still at least twice as high as spec. Truss rod appears correct, and I’ve used a capo to remove the nut+tuning posts as a factor in measurement.I’ve ordered an alternate bridge and saddles, which may or may not correct this. Since I still need to intonate as well, I’ve put off all but making sure the pickups work, so I can’t comment extensively on the sound. It sounds like a J bass, enough that I don’t regret my purchase. I’ve played 4 strings for years, just wanted to fiddle around with a 5 string, and I really wanted a J bass (an American Fender has been my dream bass almost since I started playing). So this seems almost perfect so far.

My main bass is a Sadowsky jazz bass. If you can afford one and find one in stock, then a Sadiwsky a dream come true. I wanted a second bass to loan out to the other bassists at my church, and I wanted quality and affordability. This Squire jazz bass stands out in quality from all of the other basses at this price point. It even surpasses the quality of basses at twice the price. This cost 10% of what I paid for my Sadowsky and has 75% of the quality of my Sadowsky. Be sure to get it set up properly. Adjust the truss rod properly, set the intonation, and get the action where you want it. The adjustments will make it sound 20% better.

I absolutely love this bass. Once I found out that the only differences between this and its mainline Fender equivalent were the wood used for the fretboard and the pickups (which are changeable anyways, provided you can solder). Such a great value for what you get. I did have to set this bass up once it got here, but thats part of getting a new instrument.
