I've been using this lens on my Sony A7RII for the past 6 months, having made a big decision to ditch my Canon 6D using the 135mm F2 back in December last year. It has taken me some time to get used to the Sony A7RII as it's a much more advanced camera with many more settings to configure. I had been tempted to go back to Canon on a few occasions, but the small, lightweight profile of this camera and lenses made me stick with it and I'm happy I did.I did a lot of research on what lenses to buy on a budget and wanted something similar to the Canon 135mm F2 which had been a great lens, giving similar results to the unaffordable Canon 85mm F1.2. A Sony G lens would be nice of course, but that is also unaffordable. My preferred focus settings are Lock-on AF: Center with continuous AF which means I can focus and recompose each shot without losing focus on the subject (most of the time). I also have face detect on and set eye AF using the button on the side of the lens, which is very useful. I must say, focussing on the Sony is light-years ahead of the Canon 6D, but it does take some time to fully understand the numerous focus settings. The performance of this lens for the price is unbelievably good. It has impressive sharpness wide open, shallow DOF and gives a very pleasing bokeh - more of a Cat's Eye bokeh in some situations but this is not a problem for me. Chromatic aberration is insignificant and easily removed in Lightroom. I shoot almost entirely at F1.8 but tested this at F22 and the results are again extremely good with excellent edge to edge and corner sharpness.I've added one of my favourite shots of a squirrel (shot through a glass window) [1/320 sec - F2 - ISO 100] Note: Photo quality will be lower due to Amazon reducing the quality. The build quality of the lens is better than I had anticipated - It's all metal and feels like a premium lens. It's not weather sealed which is the only disappointment, however, I used it for 4 days in Lapland, where it snowed every day with a temperature between -7 and -15. It survived coatings of snow and still works fine (I took plenty of Silica Gel sachets and kept them in my bag to soak up any moisture). One of the main reasons for leaving Canon was to reduce gear weight and size, and this lens is both compact and lightweight - I can leave it attached to my Sony A7RII (with lens hood attached) and it fits perfectly in my Think Tank Turnstyle 10 v2 sling bag with room for my Sony 28mm F2, Manfrotto Pixi Mini Tripod, Godox TT350S Flash and other small accessories.I've got nothing but praise for this lens and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great value portrait lens that gives professional results.

This lens is an excellent performer and represents a good compromise compared to the premium f1.4 GM lens and third party alternatives. The key strengths of this lens for me are- the autofocus is quick and accurate, meeting my needs for portraits - both human and feline.- it features a customisable button and autofocus switch on the lens for convenient control/usability.- build quality is very good - it feels good in the hand without being heavy.- the image quality is excellent and sharp. The aperture of f1.8 is more than usable as I frequently stop the lens down to ensure both eyes and the face is in focus and I like to include some of the background for context. On an A7iii the lowlight performance means that f1.8 is usable in lowlight situations and experience has backed it up. On a higher resolution body such as the A7RIII or A7RIV, noise may be an issue but that is subjective.I came to this after using my venerable Canon EF85mm f1.8 via an MC-11 adapter by Sigma. The Sony 85mm f1.8 is a definite upgrade in every way from build quality to image quality. It’s moderate size and weight means it is always in my camera bag and I have used it in street, landscape, casual and portrait settings without issue. There are cheaper options available but you compromise on build quality and features (control switches and custom button) and there are premium alternatives which offer potentially higher performance. The 85mm f1.8 represents a balanced alternative, priced very competitively with strong performance.

Sony have done it. They've finally released a more affordable lens than the 85mm 1.4 G Master. This is literally my favourite lens EVER. And I own the Sigma 85mm 1.4 ART for my Nikon cameras! It's as sharp as nails. Focussing is quick and effortless. The size is convenient too.I did manage to do a VERY quick and unscientific test with the 85mm 1.4 GMaster. I was very surprised to find focus speed was slower on the G Master. It also seemed to hunt more than the 1.8. Using the same subject in low light, the 1.8 locked on with no issues. The 1.4 G Master hunted. So for me. I would literally get this lens and simply forget about its more expensive big brother. My only issue is that its so good that my wife & I are fighting over who gets to use it (we're professional photographer/videographers).It seems the only solution is to buy another! Except Amazon have no stock at the time of writing :(

I have recently moved over to the Sony platform.I own a Sony A7R ii and was on the look out for a 85mm portrait lens. I already own a Zeiss Batis 25mm and was looking at buying the Zeiss Batis 85mm to add to the family. However, Sony recently launched the FE 85mm f1.8 which was price less that the Zeiss. Although the Sony is still a premium priced product compared to equivalent lens from Canon, Nikon, Pentax etc... It is just as good as the Zeiss Batis in my option. Yes, the bokeh on some of the shots maybe a little rugby ball shaped but I am not a professional and nor am I making money out of my photos. I am an enthusiast photographer....I really liked the focus button on the lens, definitely prefer using this for Eye Auto Focus than the back button.Overall, really happy with the purchase and glad I picked the Sony over the Zeiss and saved some money for future additions.

for the past 30 years or so I have shot using Canon L glass- I am indeed a lens snob. I purchased the Sony A7rii and have been using my own glass via an adaptor but thought I needed to try a native lens. I have to admit that I was very reluctant to get a 'cheap consumer' grade lens but the write ups assured me that this was a good lens..I have used the G Master version of this lens and was not impressed, the focus was slow and the lens itself is heavy. This 'cheap' lens is fast and accurate to focus. The images are sharp, in images of very high contrast you may see some colour fringing (although to be honest you would see this with most lens!),lightroom removes this quickly and efficiently. For the cost point this lens is definitely worth the investment

Love this little lens. It's much smaller than my Sony G Master 1.4 however, it is much quieter and a third of the price! The image quality is almost identical to it however, the bokeh is a little bit more cat-eye shaped. It surprisingly focused better during video than the G Master, and I'm guessing that's because Sony slowed down the focus of the G Master to avoid the noisy motor sound. So comparing this to the G Master, value wise it's definitely better, however if you want the best bokeh quality and better performance in high backlighting go for the G master. Have a look at some images I took with this lens and the A7s/A6300. These photos can also be seen on my instagram @muinphotography

I bought this lens 3months ago after playing with it at the photography show and what can i say? The lens hasn't left my camera since buying it. it is incredibly sharp and the auto-focus is on point, even in low light situations. I couldn't be happier!Pros:Super sharp even wide open.a nice size on the a7iiifocus hold button (i've assigned this to eye auto focus)build is greatCons:None really!minor issue is in the design of the focus hold button, I would like to see it on the lens twice so when using the camera in a vertical position you can still use your thumb.overall:excellent value for money for a fast super sharp prime lens. Well done Sony!

This is an absolutely fantastic lens which fits Sony 6000 series cameras as well as Sony mirrorless full frame. We bought this for our A6400 and are delighted with the image quality. The lens is superb for portraits, giving beautiful background blurring/ bokeh. The fixed 85mm length makes you use your feet rather than a zoom to frame the photograph, and we have found this to be a really effective distance for framing photographs of people. The performance in low light is amazing, due to the F1.8 aperture available. The lens is lightweight, is an easily manageable size, and gives pin sharp images. The autofocus is lightning fast, and this is just a joy to use.

As Sony system owners we're used to paying over the odds for lenses. However, this lens is one of the few exceptions. In my opinion it offers the finest price/performance ratio of any native Sony FE lens - third party providers included. It naturally lends itself to portrait photography, but it's capable of so much more. It's become one of my favourite landscape lenses - although do note that it isn't weather-sealed. Go for the Zeiss Batis if you require weather sealing, otherwise this is more than adequate. Don't even think of the expensive f1.4 unless you have very specific requirements.I couldn't be more impressed by this lens. Highly recommended.

Having bought a A7 III, after changing from Nikon, I was looking for a prime lens that I didn't have even taking into account using a Nikon-Sony adapter. The 85 F1.8 has given me impressive image results at an affordable cost. The very fast auto focus and great low light capabilities of the camera meant I didn't need to look at the more expensive 1.4 option. Previous reviews also convinced me that the 1.8 was a very capable lens, this has been confirmed to me also. I shoot small circuit motor sport events, where I can get close to the action, I can see me using this lens on a regular basis based on the three races I've covered with it so far.

I tend to focus on portrait shooting, so when I moved to full frame with the A7ii, I needed a fast, prime 85mm and Sony had just released this.Of the 3 main lenses at this focal length for the Sony, the others being the Batis and F1.4GM, this qualifies as the cheapest. It certainly doesn't earn the title of cheap and cheerful. Wide open, eye af nailing focus, there's a nice fall off into clean bokeh. Where the focus is, the detail is amazing. Certainly better than a lens at this level is expected to perform. In conclusion, I understand now why the Artisans raved about it - so glad I got mine prior to general release.

85mm F1.8 compared to FE 85mm F1.4 you're not gonna find much difference, but a little. The lens is well built and it's got a little bit of weight to it, which I really love. The images that you can get from this lens is just so great, if you shoot in Manual like I do you're gonna love the results. If you're a serious photographer and you don't have one of this bad boys in your bag, you've gotta get one. The FE 85mm F1.8 is much cheaper than the FE 85mm F1.4They both perform great, so if you've got deep pockets get the FE 85mm F1.4If not, go for the FE 85mm F1.8 and you WON'T regret it.

Since this is the first lens i have purchased since the purchase of my A7r 111 this lens has been tested in depth over the last few weeks. The build quality is solid and feels like a very good quality lens, having come from Canon where i only used L lens this lens has the same feel although it is not weather sealed. So far i have had good results with this lens from portrait to Landscape.I bought this from an online retailer and paid what i concider a reasonible price for the product.

Superb lens!Very sharp from 1.8 to 8. 1.8 has a very scary narrow depth of field naturally. I usually use it a couple of stops down. Bokeh is great, if thats what you crave. For the size its light and easy to carry. I find it very useful for isolating subjects at 5.6 and above. Little bit pricey for what it is, but far better value than the 1.4 with equal quality. Who needs 1.4 and for that matter, who needs 1.8, 2.8 would have been fine!Great lens!If portraits are your thing, buy it!!!

After doing much research for a portrait lens I stumbled across reviews for this particular lens. Every review i read and saw had glowing reviews about this lenses quality, sharpness, and overall value for buck. Well i just got mine today and I can honsetly say with hand on heart, the rumours are more than true. What an AWESOME lens. I dont care what youve used or what you have to do, but for all Sony users, this is a MUST HAVE lens. If you see it, just buy it. Thank you Sony.
