I've been riding these on my front and back wheels for about four months now. They are pretty good and inspire a bit of confidence in slushy snow, fresh powder, and ice sheets generated by melting and freezing snow. I probably would not have biked as much this winter without them.A few things to know beforehand:1) They can be pretty difficult to put on. Between the wire bead and perhaps the tire sizing itself, I was fighting to get them onto my wheels. I found it difficult to get them on without pinching the inner tube, and even when I thought I had it right I walked out the next morning to a flat tire. The second time around was easier--so I'm more than willing to chalk this up to a beginner's learning curve. However, make sure you have sturdy tire levers, perhaps a bit of soapy water, and check out a few YouTube videos to get a general strategy worked out before installing (and make sure you have easy access to some spare tubes).2) They require a break-in period of 25 miles (or 40km) on dry pavement taking it easy on acceleration and braking. Pick them up and install before you need them!My commute is about six miles on various surfaces, mainly chip seal roads (where the extra traction afforded by the studs can really come in handy) but also non-trivial stretches of recently paved asphalt and both concrete roads and sidewalks. You do notice the greater rolling resistance--especially on windy days. They are also fairly loud and can induce a rumbling feeling while riding during the break-in period, but it does settle down after that. Though, you still won't be sneaking up on many people.I've found that they do seem to have a greater propensity for being sucked into road ruts, whether that's packed snow and ice or normal interfaces between an asphalt road and concrete gutter or control/expansion joints on concrete sidewalks. I also did manage to lose four studs on my back tire in an emergency braking situation well after the break-in period, though it doesn't seem to be any less effective on ice.Despite the effort involved in getting them on the wheels and keeping those wheels spinning through the added rolling resistance, they are well worth it. It's easy being extra cautious while turning or going over glare ice in sunlit conditions, but they definitely have saved my bacon on at least one occasion when I encountered an unexpected patch of black ice at a stoplight while braking.

I cannot recommend these enough. If you, like myself have to commute whatever the weather these are a must for the winter. I work shifts that alternately fall on a 5am ride to work. I used to look out the window on a freezing winter morning and dread seeing ice on the roads because the first 3miles of my commute doesn't get gritted and I've often walked instead of riding for fear of coming off for the umpteenth time on black ice. With these I have no problem. In some respects I look forward to it.I think some of the negative reviews on here are highly unrealistic. You will never be able to ride like you would on slicks on a scorching day. Common sense should prevail. Take it easy cornering, give yourself a little extra time and just be confident you are not going to bin it on the ice.I've ridden conservatively on these for 100miles plus and not lost a spike and so what if you do? Just replace them. I'd much rather loose a fail safe stud in heavy breaking than damage the actual tyre if it were a fixed spike. They are noisy but I quite enjoy that. Going over different road surfaces often gives some funny results. One long section of raised wooded footpath makes them hum like a Lancaster bomber! Makes me smile every time.Pros:Grip and Confidence on Icy/light Snow roads.Reflective tyre wall gives great side visibility for cars at junctions.Joe public hears you a mile off and moves out the way on tow paths. Some times sounding like a tank or a Lancaster bomber!!!Cons:A little costly but see them as an investment. You may lose a spike or two but replacements are available. If you don't like tanks or Lancaster bombers you may not like these.

I have a 4-mile commute each way, mostly on a bike path that is plowed with a 1-day lag and that remains ice-coated in many places. My bike slid out from under me on ice last winter. I was lucky not to break a hip when I hit the ground, and don't want to try my luck again.I installed these tires six weeks ago, and have been riding mostly in snowy and icy conditions since then. The tires have noticeably--but not overwhelmingly--higher drag on dry road than my general use tires (low-end road-touring tires) have. The opportunity cost of their relative efficiency is that, without a deep snow tread, they do not get traction (given my riding style, at least) on a steep hill with more than 1/2" of fresh snow. But I can ride on flat terrain in 1--2" of fresh snow, and am secure on ice at moderate speed. The tires do not have studs far up the side (as Schwalbe Marathon winter tires do), but I do not need to ride in rutted ice, and I would not lean far enough into a turn on flat ice that those side studs would encounter the road, so they would be useless for me.These tires seem to be identical to the Schwalbe Marathon studded tires, except for lacking side studs. Those tires have over 20 Amazon reviews. One problem noted by several reviewers is that some of their studs have fallen out. So far, I have not lost any studs in my tires.

There are really two types of ice out there on the roads. One type is where the ice has formed from melting water, making a thin, perfectly level film on the ground. These tires rock for this kind of ice, provided you don't inflate them fully, of course - low pressures are best since they result in the best surface contact area between the tire and the road. On flat ice, I can cycle as if it was ordinary pavement. Naturally, I take a speed hit on this, since you need to pedal a little bit harder to get the studded tyres to move.Uneven ice, caused by a mixture of rain, ice and snow freezing and thawing over and over again results is much more difficult to handle, and while these tyres do provide some level of safety, they really do not prevent the back tire from going out of alignment any time it hits an accidental bump or - worse - a frozen trail left by another car or bicycle. The studs do help to some degree, and in most cases your front wheel goes where you need to - because you can see it. As for the back wheel, I suggest you take it slow - stop pedaling and reduce speed.Overall I'm happy with these tyres, though I think the slightly spikier tyres (Ice Spiker Pro or similar) would have been better for MTBs since they have more grip on non-icy roads in addition to frozen ones.

I bought these tires as part of a motorized bike build, and have used them for several months, now, for commuting in northern New Hampshire. I work at a ski area, and I have to ride up a three-mile, 10% grade, and then through a snowy, sometimes unplowed, access road to get to my job. I have never felt nervous with these tires. on packed snow or glaze-ice, they grip nearly as well as pavement. One day, I had to ride to work during a snowstorm, when there was about half an inch of untracked snow on the main road. These tires handled this condition flawlessly, hardly ever losing traction, even on the steepest part of the climb (over 20% for about 1,000 feet). In light snow, on pavement, they tend to cut through to dry ground, as opposed to wider tires that ride on top of the slick snow. About the only condition these tires do not like is fresh, or lightly packed, snow over three inches deep. If you plan to be doing a lot of off-road riding, I would buy a set of studded fat tires. I have even had decent luck with standard mountain bike tires, as long as you aren't riding steep, technical trails. As an aside, these tires and an 80cc motor will turn your bike into an excellent cheap winter commuting vehicle, even in rural and mountainous areas like where I live.

Wow. You can ride on pavement, dirt, snow, slush, ice, it really doesn't matter. On pavement, there is a noise from the studs that sounds like sizzling bacon, and there is definitely a noticeable increase in rolling resistance from my 32C cyclocross semi-slicks. On dirt, it's like riding on suction cups. You can go along a 45 degree bank, with the bike vertical, no problem. On snow, as long as you don't hit ice ruts or giant piles, it's just like riding on dirt. The wheel can slip front-to-back a bit on ice (like, spin the rear wheel), but it won't fall over or drift side-to-side.I should also note, the studs are tungsten carbide, and will scratch the heck out of your floors if they're wood/tile/concrete/anything-but-carpet.Be careful when bringing the bike inside.I bought the 700x35C size, and due to the studs they're a tiny bit too big for my 35C max fender, and they ended up slicing a channel in it until I removed it.The reflective strip looks fantastic, and is highly noticeable in car headlights.

These tyres are a bit odd, firstly, they're very heavy, quite difficult to get on and you have to run them in for 25 miles, even with careful running, you will lose a few studs, a quick email to Schwalbe and some replacements arrived gratis. Riding them on tarmac is odd, they make a crackling noise like you're riding on bubble wrap, grip on wet hard surfaces is not brilliant either, one particular corner that is no problem even on CX tyres made the Winters begin to slide.Of course extreme conditions are where these tyre are able to shine, the first inclination you get that you are on ice is that the tyres go quiet as the studs dig in and grip, great for ungritted cycle paths. On snow, things are not as rosy, the treads cannot cope with any more than a skim and the tyre just lets go, not as bad as a normal treaded urban tyre, but nowhere near as good as the knobbles on my MTB, if you live in snowy areas, you'd be better off with a CX tyre or an MTB on Ice Spikers.

Low rolling resistance makes this deck is ideal for those who commute to work as I do. Barmark: Works well, a bit higher resistance, which can be expected but it does not jump and studs seems to be sitting where they should be. Ice: Very good grip, even with quite hard tires. Snow: Snow is no problem but it gets some when it formed and frozen together again. But it will probably all tires more or less. Mud: This tire's weakness is half frozen slush as low tread depth can not manage to throw away. Straight ahead, that's fine, but take it easy in the turns. Overall, I am very pleased with the tire.It has guaranteed saved me from several somersaults in the past month and delivers absolutely what it promises.

Bought a set of these for use in icy conditions. Only had a week of riding on sheet ice & frost and another couple of weeks in the damp. I rode on a half mile section of quiet road which was sheet ice (and downhill), on any of my other tyres, slick road, treaded road I would not have been able to stay upright... with these I managed to stay in control fine every time. They do make a huge difference on ice (even black ice) They seem to be pretty tough too. On the downsides are they're heavy, noisy, quite expensive and drag more than a mountain bike tyre... so in normal conditions can be hard work. Great for ice though!

I've only had these tires on for one real snowstorm so far, but they made it so I was able to commute by bike on a day that all of my colleagues in cars suffered through terrible traffic and witnessed (or participated in) several accidents. Most of my colleagues in cars saw a 100-400% increase in their morning commute time; with these tires, I was able to cut through the 2 inches of snow and have comfortable, confident traction on packed snow and ice, so my morning commute time was only increased by about 5%. I was the fastest one on the roads that morning, thanks to these tires.

I ride every day all year round and this tire is my second. The first thing I bought for approx. 6 years ago (I only have studded tires). These tires are superb. I read about a guy who had gotten rid of two studs after half an hour, my guess is that he is either one of them who refuses to put his foot down at red lights and keeps his balance by turning the handlebars back and forth or he got a "monday copy". My experience is that they last longer than the life you usually talk about, 2-3 years, in addition, I do not have to worry about slipping. A really good (and cheap) tire.

This is one tough tire! I rode for a whole winter on them (mostly dry pavement ~1500 miles) and there is hardly any ware on the rubber and the studs look almost new. I used this to replace an older 45 North studded tire and the difference is night and day!The performance of this tire actually convinced me to purchase a set to Schwalbe summer tires; which are also working well. One note: if you are doing mostly pavement riding it may be better to get the ones with only two rows of studs instead of the 4 row version. The 4 row is overkill for what I'm doing.

Riding over pavement, ice, snow, slush, what have you in a mountain town half the time before sunrise, I only slip when there is 2.5 to 4 inches of a not hard layer on the road. As the tire cuts through different layers and briefly moves around among different ice/slush/powder I start to skid, usually in the front. With just one on the back, I was falling off the bike. But with one in front and one in back, I've yet to fall yet. Probably ridden 140 miles or so.Also, passing slow fat bikers on these skinny tires on a single speed road bike. Just saying.

These are great and really work in winter. They will slow you down alot and makes some noise but will keep you going in ice and snow. I tend to get two seasons out of a pair. Eventually the studs work through to the inner tubes and have to be replaced.Love them. A few cautions, They will slide a little on a metal surface if you are turning the metal on metal is not a good grip. They also won't help against invisible buried obstacles. Not that I fell of my bike due to a buried obstacle, ... I am just saying.

Great tires. They role smooth and fast. The studs on these are smaller than you will find on a studded mountain bike tire and the tread is smaller as well. That's okay because they are two completely different types of tires. These role sooooo much easier than my studded mountain bike tire and for side walk commuting on slippery surfaces they do their job very well. They installed easily, provide ample traction, and I really like the reflector side walls for added safety. I would buy these again.
