I had a Tefal Mini Compact VC130115 steamer before buying this. You are supposed to be able to put the tiers for the Mini Compact in the diswasher but the plastic degrades and develops cracks and eventually they fall apart. I only want to use one tier most of the time so we got this Russell Hobbs steamer because it is one of the few I could find where all the tier are the same size so I can dispose of a tier and use a different one instead to make it last longer. The Tefal Mini Compact is tapered so once the bottom tier breaks you've had it. The Russell Hobbs (and most other steamers) plastic tiers are however not supposed to be put in the dishwasher. This steamer differs from the Mini Compactin that it boils all the water in the base to create steam and does not have a tray under the tiers to catch the juices so these boil in the base too making cleaning a bit more difficult. The Mini Compact has a plastic ring round the element and so boils just a small quantity of water inside the ring rather than all the water you fill it with. This means the Mini Compact is steaming within a minute or so when filled with cold water, whereas the Russell Hobbs takes six minutes to create any steam and eight minutes to properly get boiling. You can fill the steamer with boiling water from your kettle to get it going quicker.Cooking times are similar to the mini compact once it has heated up. Things like vegetables taste great (flavour is lost if you boil them) and can be cooked in 30 minutes, or 20 if you like it slightly firm. Root vegetables like potatoes take 40 minutes or so so put them in first and let then cook whilst you chop cabbage or broccoli for example which you can add for the last 20-30 mins. If you are in a hurry, slice potatoes thin like dauphinois and it will cook in 25-30mins. Beware putting frozen peas in part way through as this will slow the cooking of anything in the same or lower tiers. The Mini Compact tiers have more evenly distributed steam holes which gives more even cooking than the Russell Hobbs where there is just a ring of holes near the middle only. Water boils into the bottom of the bottom tier of the Russell Hobbs as well, which is not ideal. The mechanical timer is OK. The Mini Compact had certain fill levels to set a certain time cooking and then it buzzes when the water has run out. The Mini Compact tiers are thicker and feel more robust and rigid than the thin and flimsy polycarbonate Russell Hobbs tiers. For cooking meat and fish with either steamer, use a little olive oil wiped in the tier before putting it in and this will help to stop it sticking. The elements for either steamer will grow scale in hard water areas unless you use filtered water. The wire ball descalers are quite a good and simple solution though, so you can put one in the bottom to reduce scale and it also seems to help existing scale go brittle and flake off.Overall this is a good steamer and I am happy with it. The Tefal Mini Compact was a bit easier to clean and cooked more evenly - it just didn't live up to the claim that it could be dishwashed.

I absolutely LOVE my steamer. Its small enough for one, and big enough for 2, which is exactly what I need. I do my whole meal in the steamer and love the results every time. The product is strong, easy to clean, and easy to use. And takes up hardly any space on the countertop. The only time it has ever boiled over is when doing frozen haddock, so I think it probably something in the haddock that does this. Everything else has cooked beautifully, with no problems at all. I would recommend it to anyone.

From the pictures you do not see the baskets placed into each other for ‘’easy storage’’.If you try to fit them into each other they will go put its very difficult to separate them so we don’t.One basket full of kale is sufficient quantity for two people (if you like Kale that is).We are happy with the product; we just have to make room for the baskets.Regards Glyn

This was bought as a gift because we already had one that was bought as a gift for us. It is excellent value for money, works efficiently, and is easy to keep clean. However the baskets for the food feel very flimsy, and feel that they might break when being cleaned. However they haven't yet.

When this steamer arrived I thought god it is going to be big but once I have unpacked it, it was lovely and small. Sit on my worktop fine without taking up too much room. This is ideal for a couple (possible one child aswell) but not a family due to the size.Really good product.

An excellent item, cheap, but does the job well, I only bought it as my cooker has broken and i cant afford a new one with hobs, so this works wonders for what i need it for, ( mostly cooking vegetables) I highly recommend this, its money well spent.

Good product that looks smart and works well. It is a little smaller than I imagined and compared to our old steamer, that said I cooked for 8 and managed to just about squeeze in enough veg for everyone so it should be sufficient for most families

the russel hobs steam cooker is neat, easy to use a little bit delicate to handle, cleans easily with warm soapy water,I use my steam cooker every day with a timer you don't worry about over cooking so evey thing comes out perfect every time.

Love this steam cooker, very simple and easy to use. The rice bowl looks small but holds a great size of rice and wouldn't be without it now. I now steam all my vegetables. Arrived very quickly and very impressed by the service. Many thanks.

the steamer works great at cooking but as this model doesnt have a drip catch the water drains directly into the base and this can sometimes cause the water to bubble into the first compartment makign a mess when you take it off

People have been complaining about this steamer and I was in two minds about buying it. I am so glad I did. My food cooks beautifully. You have to boil the water first and my salmon dinners are delicious. A very happy purchase.

I don't have a lot of spare work surface in my kitchen so when I needed a new steamer I chose this one because it is compact. It is super efficient and easy to use. Down side it-doesn't have a bell to signal end of steaming.

This is the second RH steamer that I have bought, the first one being used most days. The base unit works well and soon heats up, but I would like the transparent containers to be made of slightly thicker materials.

small so don't take up much work space. Basic and easy to use. Only downside is the baskets are the same size so don't sit inside each other when not in use. If they did then I would have given 5 stars.

A little smaller than expected but perfectly adiquate for two people , would require larger if cooking for more people. Have had a larger one before so would choose larger one on the future
