The main beam is very nice -- stronger and wider than my Petzl Myo. The heavy battery pack seems like it will be good for delivering longer hours than the Myo, but it IS noticeably heavy. (I might opt more often for light Li batts.) The side-LEDs seem dumb. I've seen them reviewed as 'good floods.' --Not. Perhaps they are nice for giving a slightly wider (but dim) lighting area in a close space -- but not really usable for wide light beyond, like, 6 feet away or at a walking pace. The LEDs also are blue toned -- yuck. The main beam is nicely white.I bought this light to be a hopefully better light than the Myo for biking and skiing. I've used Petzls for maybe 10 yrs.(I also sometimes use a cheap Chinese superpower light, which is strong but too spotty and its head-mount is very sketchy.) So far the Apex comes out on top. Not a huge improvement, though. But probably significantly better than my beloved Myo. I use rechargeable batts and I keep using them for years, so they become wimpier over time. The Myo with 3 batts ends up having quite a short run-time -- maybe only an hour of going strong -- which is a concern during outings so I've been bringing extra batts with me. Hopefully the Apex will give more solid hours per set of 4 wimpy batts. At mtbiking distance the Apex main beam is about 6 feet diameter. Petzl is maybe 4 feet, and less bright. But w/ reg batts the PT weighs a LOT more than the Myo -- almost to the point of being a 'not what you want on your head' sort of weight, and the little side LEDs seem SO USELESS AS TO BE ANNOYING. Good gear should have nothing in excess. Lastly, the battery pack comes out with difficulty and there is no handle for it so you have to kind of torque it out by the wire-attachment: BAD. Hopefully it'll loosen over time.

This is brilliant, there's no other way to describe it. I wanted something very bright for cycling, but also dimmable for working outside at night and more diffuse for working in my dark laboratory at work. The brightness options on this head torch and the ability to switch between the diffuse and more focussed settings, mean that it is versatile enough to do all these things. The battery pack is quite large, but I welcome using four AA batteries rather than a custom made (and therefore expensive) battery pack. It doesn't feel as heavy as I expected and is very comfortable when worn. The price will put a lot of people off, but having used (and owned) several cheaper head torches,I can say that I don't begrudge paying this price.UPDATE: The 'side' LEDs stopped working sometime last year, which meant that only the central extremely bright light still worked - fine for outdoors, but when using it in place of an inspection lamp it was just too bright. However, even though I purchased through Amazon, Princeton honoured their lifetime warranty and replaced the faulty unit for me free of charge. I am extremely happy with their customer support and their product.

A beast of a headtorch! Superb output on the highest setting, although I note that the run-time won't be long if used on it. But that's to be expected. However, it throws a great beam, in reality too much for general use, but for route finding, it's superb on that setting. On the lowest setting, it's fine for general use. It seems well made, although I have noted some older reviews which suggest that some people have experienced cracks in the lamp unit. Hopefully this problem has been solved, but I've made a point of retaining the receipt. I don't like the buttons much - while they are nice and large, they require a hefty press - which does of course mean that the chances of it being accidentally turned on when in a rucsac or a drybag are low. With heavy gloves, it's almost impossible to turn on/off. It would be nice if it started on the lower settings - but this may be a personal thing. I like that it runs on AA batteries - which means I can use rechargeables. I've not had it long enough to comment on real-life battery life, or had the opportunity to run it on rechargeables yet.

This head torch is the muts nuts! I use mine for biking at night, where it easily competes with friends bike lights that cost 5 times as much. I have owned many headtorches in the past and this is easily the best one I've bought. It's definitely a heavy weight, compared to a lot of the gram scrimping ones available now, but they don't offer anywhere near the trillion candle power output that the apex offers. I use mine with rechargables which last for a couple of hours on full beam, but be warned, when they reach there regulated limit they do tend to die quite quickly. Advisable to keep a spare set of duracells handy! All in all,if you can deal with the weight then this is a powerful and very well made headtorch.

I got the Apex years ago when it first came out. It's brilliant! I use it mostly for cycling home at night - the peripheral LEDs are generally good enough for me, but the main spot LED has been excellent when cycling in fog/snow - it cuts through it!The only "downside" is that it's made of plastic, so it will break/crack if you don't treat it well. However, having said that, Princeton Tec will fix/replace it within reason and warranty - they have excellent customer service! I got the latest 200 lumen version as a replacement - fantastic!!!Highly recommended for cycling/camping!

Got my princeton tec apex, first impressions, good quality, looked nice, felt nice, but more importantly how did it perform?Threw in some batteries and i was away, went outside at night, went fishing, went rock climbing at night, went rambling and it just seemed to tick every box i asked it to tick. If your looking to spend just over 60 bucks on a headlight, look no more. The princeton tec is a seriously nice product if your looking for quality and performance!

I have had one of these before and finally the battery compartment broke and I had to replace it.The batteries last for a very long time and the light is very bright. We use this for walking the dogs on dark winter nights and for everyday jobs around the house, in the roof etc.It is quite pricey but well worth the expense and you will definitely be pleased with it if you buy one.The old saying "You get what you pay for" is certainly true in this case.

Excellent battery life, definitely waterproof, and it's held up perfectly to the rocks, mud, water, etc. while caving. On my helmet it gets regularly smacked into things with no problem.I'm very impressed with the battery life with 4 AAs.The light also includes a battery meter and some features to help you save power. There's more info in the manual here:http://princetontec.com/omi/apex_omi.pdf

Some times you really do get what you pay for, this head torch may be expensive but it is probably one of the brightest you'll find and the batteries last well. It seems well made and robust, i use it daily in work and also every night walking the dog and its never let me down, it also fits really well and doesn't move about when running, i would definately buy it again.

Light is very bright, which is good. My only complaint is I have a rather large head, and the headband is tight enough that it becomes bothersome after extended periods of wearing it. My old model of Princeton Tec headlamp, similar to this one, had a larger headband and consequently was much more comfortable for extended wear.

Purchased for our son to use in Africa, where electricity/power is spotty. Long battery life, compared to the amount of light produced. Produces super bright, clear light. Love that it uses regular, easy to find batteries, not specialty batteries. Sturdy construction. Good for heavy duty use. Highly recommend.

This light has good broad main beam and is pretty brite on LOW with a run-time of 12 hrs using Alkaline BATTS.On HIGH its good and bright, but not sure about run-time.There IS a blue spot in the center of beam, but its not noticable out-doors.The outer proximity lights work very well also.

I got three of this model (for me and two colleagues) and I can say this headlamp is sturdy and powerful, with a strong output and high quality construction. The only problem is that gets hot after a while and the battery life is not as promised, but is still better than other headlamps.

Slightly heavy on the head compared to other options but the beam/lighting blows them away. Super bright and comforting when you're 8 miles deep into Griz country. I'll take the added weight and brightness any day. I Love this headlamp.

I was hesitant to spend the money on a headlamp.. but I quickly found out its necessary. This thing works great and fits my giant head nk problem. It's comfortable for what it is. Glad I got it.
