This has to be the best purchase I’ve made in a while since my purchase of my Shimano Baitrunner reel. I was looking for a lever drag reel that was left hand retrieve, I have an older Penn 330Gti and a grouper I caught recently actually was peeling line off of that reel with the drag cranked all the way down. But I couldn’t really find a good lever drag reel that I was happy with as I prefer LH retrieves, then a buddy on the Tampa Bay Fishing Club recommended this beauty to me. So glad I took his advice, the day I received it, I removed my Penn Rival 20 from its Rival 7’ rod and put this reel on it. Put some mono backing and 65 lb Power Pro braid on, went out and tested it. Love the casting and reeling with it,I wish they had level wind but oh well I’ll get adjusted to it quickly. Now I just need to break that new reel curse and catch something on it.This reel is very smooth reeling, love the 2 speeds of it and how well it fits on my rod.I did use the back mounting plate from my Penn Rival instead of the included one, only because the one from the Rival has a hook holder built into it.Be sure that if you purchase this reel, that you 1. Know how to cast a bait caster style reel, but keep in mind these spools are much larger and spin more freely. 2. Be prepared for backlash/birds nests. 3. You know that these do not have levelwind and you have to guide the line manually to spool it level.

Penn 25 N Fathom 2 Speed lever drag is a Giant Slayer. It was loaded with about 285 yards of 100lb braid which was about 15-20 yards short of the proclaimed yardage First trip out I caught a 111" fork length White Sturgeon from the wild Fraser River in Chilliwack, British Columbia Canada, minutes from my house. This fish demanded all the drag this reel could produce. The reel was set to Sunset and hang on 2 Friends and I were very impressed with the smooth amazingly strong drag. Three of took turns on the rod as we tired and subdued this monster in about 1 hour, after 3 water clearing jumps/somersaults.I tried the lower gear which worked well I also used this lower gear to spool it under heavydrag This reel worked flawlessly during the fight against a true giant.I have also cast this reel from shore and it free spools nicely To get out to where the sturgeon live .......year one update, reel has been a workhorse boat sturgeon reel I do not cast with it from shore as I have the fathom 2 star drag now that casts more reliable with casting control . I Have used the lever drag Fathom 2 speed for Large ling cod and rock fish in BC The second gear really shines in this fishery Reeling in Jigs and bait rigs of up to 2lbs . As well as the ability to pull strong fish from the structure this the lower gear and 33lbs of drag. I highly recommend this reel

I am reviewing the 60 sizeI will update review once I put the reel to work on some big fish this summer.First impressions are amazing, the reel feels rock solid. I tend to gravitate towards Daiwa reels however in this class of reel the Penn seemed the better choice. In fact, as far as I know, there are no other companies making a reel in this class for this price with these features.I spooled it up with 100# braid, and I will mostly be topping it with 80# mono or flouro for tuna. I felt 100# was the better choice because it gives me the ability to top it with 100# without a complete respool. Also it holds so much line that using 100 still gives me more line than I should ever need for west coast bluefin.Held 500Yds of 100# power pro, with room for 50 to 100yds of 80# top shot.I made a few practice casts into the harbor with it, feels great, casts smooth, reels smooth.I paired the reel up with a Cousins 60-80# 6' rod (also my first try with cousins).I included pictures to show size.

This is a great reel for the money, and should handle pretty much anything from striped bass to small tuna. There is a little bit of play in the handle, but it's only about 1mm, and the button used to switch the cranking power isn't as nice as some higher priced reels, but it works well. One major thing to be aware of is that Penn's own website lists the capacity at 395 yards of 65lb braid. I just had mine filled at a very respected pro shop with 65lb Diawa J Braid metered braid (.016 inch/0.41mm diameter) and it was full to the top of the spool at 300 yards. In the answered question on this pagel, ricardo hill states his holds 300 of 65 and 75 yards of 40lb mono.Either his reel was filled past the spool diameter or it's wound VERY tight. Even so, 300yds of 65lb is plenty of line for everything but large gamefish. Can't wait to get it wet!

Amazing reel, especially for the price. It's not quite as smooth as the regular Penn Fathom (expected because it's a lever drag, and the star drag/one speed Penn Fathom is the smoothest large conventional reel on the planet), but it is an amazing reel. Caught amberjacks up to 40 pounds this week with it, and they didn't stand a chance. I never cranked the drag up to "Sunset" (40 pounds), but on full drag (I adjusted/tested to make sure it was on 28 pounds) the drag was smooth as silk when the big jacks ran. The reel did not flex at all, and easy to crank big grouper off the bottom on low gear (something that was hard to do with the one speed fathom). I highly recommend! It's a game changer in the two speed reel market.

To get a left-handed reel, I usually buy Avets. For less than 1/2 the price the Penn Fathom 30 (FTH30LD2LH) is a great value. You can adjust the drag similar to other lever drag reels. Max drag rating, Strike=23 lbs, Full=28 lbs, Sunset=33 lbs. It's a 2-speed reel where you change gears by either pushing or twisting gear set button. Gear ratios are 5.5:1/2.5:1. Bearings for spool are very smooth; good for fly-lining. Similar in size to an Avet MXL Raptor, the main difference is the Avet body is stronger since Avets are machined from an aluminum block. Overall the Penn Fathom is a very nice reel at a lower cost. Wish they made the left-handed Penn Fathom reels in other larger models.

This is my Go-To reel for yellowtail fishing. Anyone who caught yellowtail know they fight like hell. This reel allowed me to bring in a 23 pound YT easily enough. It's lever drag and clicker worked beautifully. Ramping up the drag during the fight was very smoothly handled. Switching to and from low gear was flawless even during the heat of battle.I kinda want to buy another.... But I have yet to justify a second.Beautiful and well crafted reel. For its capability, it is fairly compact and light weight. Similar reels are bulkier and heavier with questionable performance.Mount it on a good quality rod and you are all set! Just need to get out there and hook up!

Great reel for the price. Used for offshore So. Cal fishing. Excellent free spool, smooth drags, and easy to use 2 speed. This is the 2 speed model and is fairly light weight when compare to expensive higher end 2 speed reels. The reel is smooth and quiet, easy to cast live bait or jigging, or just dropper loop for deep water rock fish. Deep spool can handle ample amount of mono line or 50 to 65lb spectra. Narrow profile allows for comfortable fishing all day. I have 2 of these reels, 30lbs and 40lbs setups.

really nice reel. i have other 2 speeds for tuna but i like this one the best. the reel has very little excessive looseness when cranked and under load. i like the balance of the reel, not too narrow or wide. i can purchase two of these reels for one of the others i own. the drain holes for cleanup with water are well engineered. you can spend twice as much and functionally you will NOT get a better reel for fishing. yes, the reels that cost twice as much are gold or silver anodized.

Since I started sea fishing I have been buying reels, many reels (fixed and multiplier) to try and find something that was reliable and performed as I expected. I started out cheap (£20), worked my way up to £100+ (still wasn't getting it) , then borrowed a mates old Penn reel. I liked it so I bought this fathom15 to try, then I bought another, then my mate bought 3 more... It does what it's suposed to, load it up with some quality power pro line and you'll never look back.

VERY nice reel. Purchased to use with my Beastmaster 20/30 travel rod and has proven to be a great combination. Don’t think it would handle a 200lb class Tuna with the line capacity, but maybe with a good captain willing to chase it down a bit. As for Dorado and Wahoo, the reel has preformed outstanding. Really wish Penn would make this reel in a 60 class left hand. I had to step to the Squall for that, but would Jump at a 60 class Fathom in a heartbeat.

Very nice reel. It's good to see Penn is in the front running with the evolving new equipment.I would recommend highly and I will be looking at another size to add to my arsenal , soon.In less than a year the biggest fish landed after a two hour fight was a thresher shark that weighed in at 175 pounds.Ready for more battles with marlin and sailfish season just around the corner...I will buy another!

Had the 25N 2 speed for over a year now. Also bought the 40N, but rarely have used it as the 25 is super powerful for its size. Have caught some pretty big fish on the 25 (see below for an example). I don't buy high end reels, so this is the upper end of what I spend, but it is worth every penny for bottom fishing - slow speed for when a large fish is hooked, but high speed when reeling up normally.

Amazing reel at an affordable price. I commercial striped bass tag rod and reel for a good chunk of the season. This reel has pulled in quite a few 40lbers with ease. I jig with it, most don't like lever drag for this but I feel there more versatile once you get used to them. Very smooth, not too heavy, durable and has handled spray and water no problems.

Now this is one's stout reel aluminum outside has plenty of drag and holds enough line for a 500 lbs blue Marlin or big yellowfin the drag is silky smooth just be sure to oil it every couple trips because of the open drag but I've been using them for years and no prob very light easy to fish with all day bottom fishing arrived on time as well
