We wasn't sure about purchasing this toy because it seemed expensive (at the time of purchase in Feb 2010) we are VERY glad we did though! As another reviewer mentioned you can see where the money has been spent. Well made, all brass fixtures and hinges and robust too. The board is BIGGER than we thought it would be (45cm x 30cm). Each latch has a different colour background (to help teach colours) as well as a number of different animals to aid learning to count (there is a small insert with the board's instructions for ideas what games to play). Our son is 21 months and can open and close all the latches except one that he is still trying to master! This is not a toy that they are going to play with all day every day,but something you bring out to play and help them learn. We actually bought a separate padlock with keys to use with one of the latches which works brilliantly (our boy loves keys and locks which is why we bought the latches board originally). Great fun to use once-twice a week and help your child's hand and eye co-ordination as well as counting and colours. Comes highly recommended by my little lad!

Melissa & Doug wooden puzzles are always generally what I would consider on the expensive side, but you truly do get what you pay for!Firstly, this is of quite a substantial size - it was a lot bigger than I was expecting it to be! (Really should have reviewed all the pictures!) But I think the size just adds to the quality of it. It's not overly heavy, so my little one can still slide/cart it around the lounge/her bedroom. It has a number of animals hiding behind the doors, so your child can begin counting how many animals, can work on their memory abilities and can fiddle and learn how to lock and unlock all the latches. My daughter was 2 when she received this and 6 months later,is still playing with it and gets just as excited when I get involved with her playing with it.(It is worth noting that we went through a month of her getting incredibly frustrated over the number 6 latch getting caught against the chain on number 5 when opening it, but again it was a learning curve for her).Would highly recommend this to any parent or anyone looking to purchase a gift for a little one!

I've wanted this the moment I saw it months ago.Pros:Baby loves it! And I love that it keeps her thinking. The pictures behind the doors are lovely, it's clever that the more animals there are, the smaller they become (1 horse, 2 dogs, 3 cats, 4 rabbits, 5 frogs, 6 fish...)Cons:The edges of the doors and door frames are rough, so a little sanding wouldn't hurt. Also door no.3 is bent slightly, so it's hard to open. There was what looked like glue at the bottom of the toy, which won't come off :/Edges are 'wavy' and bumpy, like the wood underneath the picture layer is frayed. There's also quite a few scratchs on the wood, but they're underneath the metal locks so they were during production, not during delivery.I would have given it 3 out of 5 stars, but I still love the product and so does baby :). The idea is amazing and I can't find anything like this elsewhere.

Bought as a Christmas present for my 13 month old after he played with one at a toddler group and it was the most played with present on the day. He LOVES opening and closing the doors which I have unlocked, and shouting "gone!". In the future I'm sure he can start to figure out the locks for himself. The numbers, colours, buildings, and animals will be a language prompt in the future too. My 7 year old also enjoyed figuring out how it worked. Don't be put off by the age 3+ recommendation. This is for "elf and safety" reasons. This toy contains small parts which in the unlikely event that it comes apart could cause a choking hazard, along with obvious hazards like if it gets trodden on by small bare feet.Definitely a toy to play WITH an adult, but aimed more at the under 3s than over. This is an occasional toy so the younger you buy it the more value it will be.

I came across this latch board on a blog with various Montessori inspired gift ideas for little ones and decided to buy it for my daughter (17 months old) for Christmas. I am very impressed with the quality - a nice thick wooden board with quality brass latches, bright and colourful designs printed on top.The gift was a hit with my daughter and she has already spent quite a bit of time playing with it - no ignoring toys in favour of cardboard boxes in this house! The only criticism I would give is that 5 out of the 6 latches are a bit too easy for her to open, so I'm not sure how long this gift will entertain her for.Perhaps it would have been a more appropriate gift around the 14 month old mark (even though the product states it's suitable for 3yrs and up - I think developmentally children would be way past this type of toy by then).

One of absolute best purchases - 1 year on, and our daughter STILL loves to play with it!We bought it for her first birthday, and she was even keen to play with it then (quite surprising, as it's not easy to keep the attention of a 1 year old). Of course, she needed to be supervised throughout play. She was a confident sitter at age 1, but still not steady on her feet. So I made sure that she played with the toy on the floor, whilst seated - in case she fell forwards, if she was standing. The toy does have some sharp corners and parts that stick-out:- it's important to keep this in mind if purchasing for a young child.Really well made, and a high quality product!Would definitely recommend to other parents.

I bought this toy for my 2 year old as he loves playing with latches on gates, fences etc so I thought this would help him learn how to operate latches safely. It has 6 different types of latch - some of them are more complex to open and it took him a few weeks to work out the more difficult ones, which kept him challenged. Each latch opens a door with a number behind it, and animals in various colours, so there are lots of learning points in addition to simply playing with the latches. The packaging comes with helpful tips for different ways to play with the toy too.All things considered this is a great toy which has kept my son's interest for several months & will probably last until he'solder too.

I was concerned by the other reviews about the quality issues but decided to buy it anyway and was glad I did. The jigsaw is well made with no rough edges and all the doors and locks work perfectly. I bought this for a one year old who constantly goes to it and can open all of the doors independently. Good for fine motor control of the locks and the different ways to open the doors, only slight disappointment is that 2 of the pictures, behind the doors, are of characters, fish and rabbits, that don’t make a noise. As she’s learning to make her animal noises we get a bit stuck particularly with the fish.Would recommend this jigsaw and feel it was good value for money.

I first came across this item at a preschool/school meeting - staff brought in various items they have in their particular setting that would be relevant to physical literacy. I saw this latches board, and (pardon the pun) I was hooked! Not only is it great for little fingers to develop hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills, but it enhances the imagination. I ordered one for my setting, and also one for my home for my children and grandchildren to enjoy. It is used daily by many children, and stands the test of time - not to mention abuse! What a brilliant, colourful, hands-on puzzle. You (and your children, if they get a look in) won't be disappointed!

This is a lovely, solid and well-made toy. Bought a while ago for my two year old son who loves to fiddle. It's not the kind of toy they will play with endlessly, but of you leave it visible you may find your child returning to it again and again. My lad is now 3.5 and still pulls this out to play with fairly regularly, and is getting more from it the older he gets - colours, shapes, numbers, as well as continuing fun with the latches themselves. You may want to buy a small padlock to use with one of the latches - they have great fun with clicking this closed and then using the key to unlock it as dexterity improves. Can definitely recommend this toy.

My boy starts to play it soon when I opened the package, he is 1yr and half but he manage to open all locks already, the toy says suitable above 3yrs old, but I think it is safe enough for younger baby. There is no damages on the product, exactly same as the picture, very good finished product, actually it is bigger than I though which is a bonus, there was once my son dropped some water on it and I thought it will leave water mark on the board after I dried it, but it looks prefectly fine after ward. I have recommended it to my friends too, now my son is trying to figure how to lock them up after he opens them all.

I ordered this for my two year old, as he has become bored by supposedly age-appropriate toys. It is really well made and durable, well designed and he really likes messing about with it. My only issue is that I thought it would take him a while to figure out and he had all the latches open and closed in twenty minutes. Don't get me wrong, he still plays with it and his dexterity has improved a lot in terms of how skilful he is at operating all the latches, but I would query whether a three year old would be kept occupied for a particularly long time.

This is a great resource, very well made and really good value for money as it would a great deal more for something similiar from an educational supplier. It only arrived this morning and is already a great hit. 1 child who loves connecting things and locks has come back to this throughout the day. Another child who is not so engrossed saw it at face value and counted the animals inside and recognised the numbers on the outside of the houses.Just going to order a little brass padlock to extend the learning for door 6

I've got this toy for my child 2nd BD. I had big expectations on it because it's very well thought and perfect for children who always try to open/close/lock/unlock every possible door in the house. However it came out that is not that interesting for her as I thought, probably because she managed to open everything really fast. No matter this - having in mind the lockers/color/number game options it is still a great toy.I would recommend it for 1,6 years old children in order to keep them busy much longer.

Good trainer for kid's fine motor and reasoning skills. My 2 and a half years old likes it but doesn't play with it much - there was an initial wow factor to it but it only lasted for a few minutes. Once she cracked the locks open she lost interest. Occasionally she gets back to it even 4 months after we introduced it to her so, it has its value as both: a learning experience and a fun toy.NOTE: The toy is heavier than I expected which kind of makes me nervous every time my kid tries to carry it around.
