Considering this design has been around for nearly 30 years, it's surprising that the cost is still so high. There must be a warehouse full of these! The design has certainly stood the test of time - it's sturdy and has a convenient low profile.For clarification, this is NOT the much more popular Manfrotto 030-14 with the huge finger-screw underneath. This is the Manfrotto 130-14 "Hexagonal Quick Release Mounting Plate 1/4-20-Inch Thread with Flush Mounting Screw". Sadly Amazon has missed half of the description and failed to provide a much more useful photograph of the underside.This Manfrotto 130-14 has a screw that sits flush with the underside of the plate. Nothing sticks out.

I ordered this to retro fit an existing tripod that had lost its plate, it works perfectly and I an very happy with the quality of the item.
