If you are looking for an articulating photographic support the Manfrotto Magic Arm is probably on your shortlist and it's a good one. Strong and robust with a realistic weight handling performance. I'm reviewing the one with the quick release platform and variable friction joint. The quick-release camera platform is Manfrotto's well-known 1/4 unc system, good for the biggest pro dslr cameras and lens collars. Other magic arms feature the ubiquitous studio lighting spigot, but this is more flexible for me. It is easy to fix a standard spigot to the QR plate if lighting is your goal and the light head can be easily fixed and removed. Spigots are cheaply and easily obtainable.I have used the earlier Magic Arm for a while, which features a lever to release and engage the joint in one movement. The Variable Friction is identified by the large round knob instead of the large lever. The lever system works well when it is all tensioned correctly but it can become loose with frequent use and require resetting. Manfrotto point this out in the manual and tell you how to. It's a bit fiddly, needing two allen keys. The thing works by virtue of ball bearings and they can jump out of their grooves. The arm does not lock at all then, and you must take the thing apart, replace the ball(s) in their grooves and reset the thing. This is really fiddly, and they are greased. I'm liking the Variable Friction Magic Arm better, I must admit. In summary, it's a well made bit of kit, well up to pro weight gear and usage levels. The Super Clamps are a well known studio 'must have' and the arm fits into them a treat, as you might expect, with no additional adapters etc. I have had large flash heads and Nikon D2 and D3 cameras on my older arm. The V.Friction model is a great idea made even better in my opinion, and though not exactly cheap, it's worth the money.Read full review...

very positive location when locked - variable friction works well for precise location of objects
