Pros:Very heavy and therefore presumably as strong and secure as it looks.7/10 (70/100)/ Sold Secure Gold security level means it should be good at keeping you bike secure.Mount prevents lock shaking and rattling when riding over bumpy surfaces, but overall design could be better (see cons).Comes with a 1.2m steel cable (not security rated). Some people have commented that is too short but it seems to be a standard length for all locks that come with them I have seen. If you are trying to put both eyes onto the lock then it is too short (by a lock without a cable and a 2m cable), however if you thread one eye through the other around one wheel and pull it through it is just long enough to thread through the other wheel (necessary if both are quick release)and put the other end into the lock (see image) although a slightly longer 1.5m cable would make it a little easier.Cons:The following assumes that my bike is a typical size and shape for an adult medium hybrid…This size lock is both too short and narrow to go around the frame a post and through a wheel, limiting me to securing around the top bar only. Some locks have an insert and rotate (either lock or collar) 90 degree method of attaching the lock to the mount, this one slides in. Because of this the only place it would mount leaving just enough room to avoid the frame both after insertion and to remove it with my hand around the lock was the underside of the top bar (see images), even then there was barely enough room so it was just as well I did not get a bigger one. This may be a pariticular issue with the size/shape of my frame, however I do suggest the manufacture look at a non sliding method of attaching the lock to the bike, if the lock was any bigger or the inside of the frame any smaller I would never have been able to mount it on the bike and I suspect that I may not be the only person to encounter this.

This is a solid bike lock and I really like it. The thing is as sturdy as a Mac truck. Although, if someone really want to compromise it they will. No lock is perfect. However, there are a couple issues that I would like to address. The first of which resides with the bike mount. It is a complex two component rig made of soft plastic that peels away when you try to tighten it down. It never worked on any part of my bike frame. The plastic on the bottom of the mount just peeled away as I tightened it. My wife purchased a cheaper knock off of this lock that has a simple frame mount that makes sense. It uses a two piece design that wraps around the frame and locks it in place with a simple screw. It actually tightens itself onto the frame. The one for this lock is......a frame mount for a lock mount that is mounted on the frame mount. It is absolutely ridiculous and kind of sad for such a high priced lock. The other problem is that the lock is way too big to be mounted on most of the bike frames on the market. I don't think that can be helped though. My bike has a thick frame and the lock barely fits through it on most bike racks around town. We have to carry our locks in our backpacks. Not a big issue, just an annoyance. The last thing is that the lock can be picked very very easily, which means that the core is a simple straight pin lock. So if anyone knows how to pick locks, then you can kiss your bike goodbye. Again, no lock is perfect and if a thief wants your bike, they are going to find away around every lock that they come up against. Regardless of these slight issues, I would rather have this lock than a cheaper model.

This is an excellent medium-high security bike lock solution. I bought one for myself and for my wife, as we both ride regularly as commuters. The mini U is large enough to lock my bike to most bike racks, street signs, and parking meters. However, I cannot fit it around my frame, the rack, and a wheel. Because it is a smaller U lock shackle, you really must rely on the cable to secure your wheels to the bike. I do not live in a major metropolitan area or on a sizable University campus, so this is plenty secure for my regular needs. The bike frame mount is secure enough, but noisy. It rattles a lot. So I took it off and now keep the U lock on my belt or in a bag.Not a big deal but if you really mind rattling and road noise, I doubt you will like the frame mount solution. If you will be using larger rack structures to secure your bike, or need to fit a wheel in there, maybe go with a bigger U. But I have really enjoyed using this lock, and it is a convenient size for lugging around.I have used it almost daily for more than 2 months now, even biking and locking outside in the rain. The lock action is still smooth.

Very impressed - the U lock feels very sturdy and locks/unlocks easily. The supplied mount is secure although I was sceptical at first after seeing that the hex bolt is used to tighten around the strap and lock it in place I am confident (and have been out riding to test) that it won't fall off. It's nice to have the mount there if I don't want to put it in a bag.The cable for securing the back wheel (U lock goes around frame, front wheel and immovable anchor point) is long enough for my (and I should imagine pretty much any) bike - just remember it's not intended to go between both the front and back wheels, only between the back wheel and the Ulock. It is heavy enough to feel substantial but not as heavy as some locks I looked at which is a bonus in terms of carrying it but anyone that gets through the Ulock was having the bike no matter what. Make sure you don't tie the cable around the bike and to an immovable object to secure it as this isn't covered by the warranty and most insurance policies, and will likely result in you finding a cable that's been cut with bolt cutters and no bike when you return.

This bike lock is heavy duty, I'll admit that. You'd be hard pressed to find another lock that is as strong as this one and as easy to bring on your bike. I use this in downtown Chicago and I've never been afraid to leave my bike locked up somewhere. The Bike loop cable is just enough to fit around both my wheels and the u-lock.Biggest downside however is the limited range that you have as a result of the lock being so small. It makes sense from a safety standpoint, the tighter and smaller the lock, the more difficult it is to break open. But if you are unable to find a decent bike rack to lock it up, you won't be able to lock it at all.Technically you could lock it by using the bike cable to wrap around something but that makes it much easier for thieves to steal your bike.If you are using this lock in an area with numerous bike racks and places to lock it up easily (city, college campus, bike-friendly neighborhoods) you will love this lock and it will keep your bike safe, but any place where you must lock your bike unconventionally, you might want to look for a sturdy chain or cable lock.

I consider this a great lock. It has a really good price to value ratio. The lock is safe since it will require some pretty heavy machinery to cut it off.The bike carry ad-on makes it really easy to transport it around. The included flex cable is useful to secure other parts of the bike like the wheels. The ends are in O, which mean you can loop it and use it in all it's length. It also comes with a velcro so you can tie it to the Ulock while in transit. It comes with three keys, one of each has a built in led light so you can spot the keyhole in the dark.It also offers one year insurance for your bike, the only catch is that they only pay if the lock is violated, the flex cable is not covered. You can also extend the insurance beyond the included 1 year for a fee.Downsides so far are the rubbery rings that serve as cushion on the locking mechanism sometimes may come out when jiggling the lock on a pole. The key sometimes doesn't turn immediately and you have to jiggle it ever so slightly to turn.Do recommend.

I knew this was a "mini" one when I ordered it but it is maybe just a bit ... too... mini.I cycle to the station to go to work, and I put my bike either against a railing, or in the two-tier bike racks. The lock is fine if I lock it to a railing but it's not long enough to fit on the two-tier bike racks and these are pretty much standard across UK train stations now. So if there's a free railing / fence / post then it's great but I can't use the racks with it because it's just a little bit too short. The key is a bit fiddly, you have to really push it into the lock and make sure it's 100% in otherwise you cannot engage the lock. The first time I used it, the key was in and would rotate, but wouldn't lock. I thought it was broken, but then I remembered reading about pushing the key in further and it worked.I'm going to keep it because it's strong, well rated , and most of all it doesn't weigh 10 tons like my last one did. But be warned it might not fit bike racks.

Edit given various items -krytonite evolution series 4Writing this after my bike got stolen but still give it 5 stars having watched the CCTV. The thieves had several attempts over a few days and eventually cut the wall bracket with an 18v angle grinder as the lock was too tough, they damaged the bike and had to carry the bike away. The lock cost more than the bike but when thieves are desperate they are desperate. I'm in the UK and despite clear CCTV capturing the faces of the thieves given my area, the police were not at all interested. The lock actually lasted 2 bikes and 15 years of use, the mechanism got stiff a couple of times sorted out with WD40 and then using pencil to coat/colour the keys and mechanism.Only annoyance was the LED keyfob where the batteries would go and can be fiddly to change the battery and find the right type. Still its a solid lock which works.

I have had one of these locks for several years now. New bike, New lock needed. The key replacement system is excellent, no hassle and keys arrived within a week. The cable is very useful for securing wheels etc.The key thing to remember, and this appears to have caused the one star ratings, is the cable is an “add on”, you can’t expect it be as secure as the lock. It’s useful but not the security feature! The lock needs to go around as much of your bike as possible (ie wheel and frame) AND an immovable object. Or your frame and an immovable object and use the cable to cover the wheels. You can replace wheels, they’re cheap compared to the frame etc. Also remember to try and fill as much of the lock as possible to prevent them getting a spreader in there to pop the lock open.

No bike locks can survice angle grinders and bolt cutters however this is a reasonable mid-price lock for reasonable security. It's better than how most other bikes are secured in my area, so a thief is likely to choose a different bike to steal. The U lock is large enough to secure a bike directly to posts and bike stands. The cable is a little thinner than it appears in the picture so a determined thief with a bolt cutter could easily cut it, but the lock mechanism is better than the competitors at this price point. Tip: For extra length, e.g. to easily secure both wheels on a larger frame or two bikes: rather than creating a loop using the security cable, push the cable end throughthe week and black through its own loop/hitch end.

I had my bike stolen so opted for a bike lock with some insurance. The lock feels well made, has a clever but fiddly bracket to attach to frame, and comes with a cable to secure your front/back wheels. The 2 reasons I cannot give the product 5 stars is because it is not actually wide enough to lock my seatpost and backwheel at the same time (as Kryptonite specify on their website). The second is that there is no obviously convenient way of strapping the cable to the lock, when not in use. The cable does have a single velcro strap, but without a second, the coiled cable readily comes loose.Overall, it is a good lock with insurance, although do note, you need proof of purchase or an appraisal certificate for the insurance!!

Recently got a bicycle for the first time in my adult life, so I researched a bunch which locks seemed to be the best. Kryptonite seemed to be a highly popular for its effectiveness. The Ulock is easy enough to use, getting the cable and u-lock to work together takes some practice but otherwise its easy. and the ulock has a mount that attaches easily to the bike wherever is comfortable. The only problem I have is the city I live in doesn't have bike stands anywhere. And the u-lock is quite short so I am having difficulty finding places to effectively lock up the bike. I wish I had paid closer attention to the dimensions of the u-lock,I would have got the longer one so I could lock it in more places more frequently.

I use this locally in outer suburbia for my 300 euro fixed speed bike. I find the cable useful as many local stands are poor (the wheel only type) and generally I wouldn't be leaving it for more than 1 hour in an area fairly well monitored. It does the job quite well considering. But I wouldn't use this for my 5x priced e-bike - for that I use 2x fahgetabboudit locks and a seatsaver for the seat post. Its good but not perfect. Its great, however, if you are locking up a bike in the sub 400 euro range that won't attract too much attention. Cable locks are still very common around here so d-locks in themselves act as a deterrent.I wouldn't put it on anything over 500 euro or in the city though.

Update:Kryptonite quickly replaced the faulty lock. The new lock looks identical, but is noticeably smoother in both the key operation and the shackle operation. It even slides into the holder more smoothly.Previous review below:The whole lock seems very sturdy, and doesn't weigh too much for what it does. But... if only the cylinder worked reliably. There have been more times than not that I have had to spend a minute or more fiddling with the key to lock or unlock. I had an On Guard Bulldog Mini that seized up that led to buy the Kryptonite. The (less expensive) Bulldog lasted 6.5 years - the grass is not greener... The Kryptonite started acting up within months. A headache. Avoid.
