Excellent GPS: quick acquisition. The software for configuring it is POOR (I wrote software for a living for 40+ years) with no help file, but you should only need to use it ONCE. Further, on the Garmin web page for this device, the "FAQ" link is broken. The Garmin web site is a DISASTER in terms of organization; it's easier to find stuff on the site by doing a general Google search and finding the link to the Garmin site. This is what happens when you let marketing people control the web site.Three months before buying the 16x-HVS, I bought the Garmin 18x-PC. The two units are functionally identical. As reported by another buyer, the GPS18x requires 5v power,so there is a voltage converter inside the cigarette power adapter to reduce the voltage from vehicle levels to the 5v required. After a while, the length of the cables and the size of the cigarette power adapter with the 18x began to annoy me. Even though they were tucked away in the vehicle's side panels, they got in the way when I made other vehicle wiring changes. So, I bought this Garmin 16x-HVS to replace it. The 16x-HVS is the only Garmin model that takes 8-40vDC (has a voltage converter INSIDE the puck).However, I should have checked the sizes of the 16x versus the 18x. The small 18x puck slides easily between the rear deck upholstery and the vehicle metal frame. The 16x is MUCH bigger, and it's a VERY tight fit in the same location. I had to make a cable adapter for the 16x, but I knew that before the purchase, and the result is a more compact installation: The convenience of not having the external voltage converter is worth it. I also bought the add-on magnetic plate for the 16x, but did not need it (but am keeping it). So, for the time being, I'm also keeping the 18x as a spare.

Needed it extremely quickly for a race in Nevada. Amazon came through with one-day shipping to my motel in the mountains. But then, when I wired it into my specialty racing computer, it didn't work! What to do?!? It wouldn't even produce a PPS timing signal even when separated from my circuitry! Then I decided to read the online manual very carefully (no documentation ships with the product itself). Turns out, the yellow wire is a remote power switch line - if it's left floating, the power is off to the unit. YOU HAVE TO GROUND THE YELLOW WIRE! Then the unit worked fine. Only one more day to the race, so I hope it stays working as well as in my bench testing in the motel room.

NMEA output is sent a few seconds after being powered, no fuss! Very useful at a reasonable price.
