Its a gps that works in conjuction with a separate map or chart. Works on us satellites and european system.Don't expect a map when it says show map. It's a diagram of where you have been.Lots of features too many to mention here.Better features than the 401, but the 401 still tells youbwhere youbare.Recommended for a method of double checking position and route use. Does not replace being able to map rwad or use a proper map!Electronics fail, map and compass work regardless.

It's a good product but for me no great advance on the Foretrex 301. I was attracted by the idea of better reception, maybe accuracy and better screen, but actually the screen is not so different, the 601 is a bit bulkier, 10% heavier and has redundant (for me) screens that have to be scrolled through to get between the ones I want.

This is a well made and robust product. I have owned other makes GPS but the FORETEX 601 is the easiest one to set up and has everything I require when out on the hills.Great product Garmin.
