... Unfortunately my girlfriend hates it. But I'll come back to that..Galaxy Trucker is a game that I ignored for a long time purely based off of the box art. I thought the artwork looked very low budget and a bit crappy, despite hearing many good reviews about the gameplay. I put it to the back of my mind and played lots of other titles for a while, but the name kept coming back up.I managed to borrow a copy recently, protecting myself from a risky investment, which turned out to be a really pleasant surprise. The game is chaotic fun that appeals to my childhood Lego-building sensibilities, allowing my imagination and strategy to work in unison and reap all sorts of space-based rewards. The building half of the game is where the meat is,putting you against your friends in timed conditions as you snatch pieces that the others want. You have to make sure the connections match and you adhere to some strict ship building rules.. then before you know it the time is up and most of you have haphazard monstrosities that lack vital parts or might not even fit together properly at all. You look around and admire (or laugh at) your friends creations, before launching them into a minefield of galactic tragedies. Bad things are probably going to happen to all of you and you'll be lucky if you make it to the end of each adventure intact. Then you'll sell your remaining cargo and collect any other due monetary rewards. The person with the most money after 3 ship adventures wins.Great stuff....But I probably won't be getting my own copy as my girlfriend has refused to play it again. She claims that she's never hated anything more in her entire life, which seems a bit strong. You see she's pretty bad at the whole ship building thing.. and I'm a little bit good at it. Whilst her ships rarely even make it past the building phase without multiple errors - mine are obsessively balanced, symmetrical and feature little to no weaknesses. This means that in a 2 player game (how we play the most often) all of the bad things happen to her and practically nothing bad happens to me. Her ships get blown to bits barely after being launched whilst I collect every piece of cargo and every bounty with ease. My victory ends up feeling hollow and her loss feels infuriating. Now, while I don't personally share her displeasure with the game, it does affect me. It's not technically a fault with the game itself, as the best built ship will likely win, but as there's no real catchup/balance mechanic - someone who's good at this game will likely destroy someone who's bad. And given that this game feels like it is supposed to be about fun rather than the perfect strategy - it could be a big problem for certain groups. You'll definitely need a more relaxed mindset that some other games and I would avoid playing with sore losers. I've been told the expansions can make the game a lot harder and less predictable, but it will take some speech to convince my girlfriend that spending MORE on this game is the solution. So there you go. Galaxy Trucker is awesome, the artwork isn't half as bad as it looks once you start playing and it might make your girlfriend very angry. Hopefully I'll get to play it again some day.

Well, as one kind Amazon customer said to me after I posted a question "shut up and write a review" I feel that I should!I first saw this game in the catalogue that accompanied Codenames and the small child in me liked the sound of building a space ship only to have it blown apart in space! We have two small children (6&8) and one bigger child (me). We all love this game. The instructions although well written don't fully explain the game, I would recommend heading to YouTube where you will find some really helpful videos to help bring it to life. It is not difficult to understand but the videos explain it better. The game is made up of two parts - build a space ship and then space exploration.I first thought that building a ship would be the easy bit.For us this was the most challenging (in a good way) You have a spaceship template board and you need to lay your components on it. We had a practice run and Mr Smug here managed to build a ship which had no engines! This part really makes you think as you need to make sure you have enough guns, engines, batteries, cargo bays and crew quarters before you head into space. The rest of the game sees you explore space to face pirates, meteors, abandoned ships and space stations and space battles. This is where you can now start to laugh at your opponents as their carefully built spaceships start to fall apart and if, due to an unlucky dice roll, get blown to pieces completely. It is at the higher end of pricing for a board game but when you see the content of the box and the detail put into the game you appreciate the cost. This is a really fun game to play and is loved by all of us. The game says 10+ but as I have said, our 6 & 8 year olds grasped the rules and have enjoyed playing it - or is that just laughing as Mum's spaceship gets blown to pieces on the second mission!

This game is fun. It has to be fun, as the alternative is that it hates you and you end up crying in the corner. It's a light game, playable in 20-80 minutes depending on how many flights you want your space craft to take. The first 5-6 minutes are spent in a mad dash to collect random pieces of spacecraft from the box (all of you at the same time), and assemble them on the board in front of you. Your craft might be bristling with guns, thrumming with engines, or echoing from all the cargo holds you've built. And whilst you are allowed to peek at some of the cards you'll be facing on your journey, Lady Luck doesn't like space. After your craft is assembled, you then launch yourself to the stars and (hopefully)your destination. Event cards are then dealt, usually affecting the first player first, but not always. Once the cards are dealt, you've made it! Any cargo you have earn you money, as will the general condition of your craft. And then you do it all again, because it's fun.Despite our group loving this, I had to knock off a star for the price. It is too expensive for the components in the box. Perhaps other games are just cheaper, but I have received much more in a box for far less cost. Still a great game, and if you find it cheap, snap it up - an Anniversary Edition has been released comprising this game, and two of the big box expansions, for around £60-70, so that's an option if you really want to take the plunge.

The game is made of three rounds of two phases each: A building phase and a travelling phase. You build ships in the building phase and then they get destroyed in the travelling phase, at least until you learn to build good, well ballanced ships! Though there is some direct and indirect player interaction, it is one of those games where it feels like you are all playing against the game, rather than against the other players, similar to dungeon lords (a more complex game by the same designer). The building phase appears at first to be a random speed round where you fill up your hull with components, there is a timer that is turned over by the first to finish that time pressures the other players. This keeps the game moving quickly, but oddly it isn't really a speed game. Building a good ship is far more important than building a ship quickly. The building becomes quite tactical after you have played a few times and there is a great deal of strategic play available if you are a hardcore gamer.I wish i had gone straight for the 5th anniversary edition though, which though very expensive for a board game, saves a lot compared to buying the expansions seperately, as i'm sure i will eventually.

This game has been a welcome addition to my board games collection, especially due to its light-hearted nature (compared to more strategic games). My favourite part of the game is the speed-building of your spaceships - you're racing to be the first one done, but beware - a singe mistake can lead to half of your ship falling off before you even take off! You then have to navigate various challenges as you sail through space, and hopefully you'll still be intact by the end.The pieces of the game are pleasing (I particularly like the Star Trek tribute on the IIIa ship template) and the rules are straightforward to understand and teach to others (although I couldn't read the German rulebook!).This is an excellent game for inexperienced gamers,as well as great entertainment for the more seasoned.

This is one of my favourite games, building the ship is great fun and once I'd explained what each ship component did once to new players they could remember each design easily enough and didn't require additional help during the stressful 'oh god where are all the guns, why can't I find a component that will fill up this space garden I've created' stage. And of course after you've lovingly built your ship you get to mock your friends for making mistakes and watch as their ship gets blown apart by space pirates and meteors. All in good fun of course. This game is one that's most often in our regular rotation on boardgame nights, we're getting an expansion for it soon,if they weren't as much as another full boardgame we'd likely already have them all.

The game itself is excellent (if somewhat overpriced for such a game). However, the copy Amazon provided was in German! You'd do well to check before buying one that looks to be at a (relative) bargain price, especially if the (co-)publisher is not Rio Grande; they do the American-language versions of many European boardgames. The publisher is often shown on the box front typically in a bottom corner. CGE in this case.Returning the game to Amazon was effortless, free, and the refund quick. I bought an English copy from a small independent instead, for significantly less than the others listed on Amazon.

I have been playing Galaxy Trucker on my Android phone for months as a sole player v computer generated opponents. Although the board game is on the expensive side I just wanted it to share the fun with friends and relatives. I think the quality of production is very good. The real bonus of the game is that although there is a final winner that is not so important as getting your own space ship to journey's end despite being rammed by meteors, attacked by pirates and blown to smithereens by sabotage. There are strategic decisions to be made but it is not a game to take seriously. It's just great fun.

Great game, simple-enough mechanics with the element of luck involved, helping you to avoid asteroids...or be completely blown apart in the space of a minute. The game gets more tricky with more players as the pieces available to build your ship are less available, but this makes for much hilarity when your ship is held together with minimal tiles. Non board-game regulars would find this easy to pick up and it's suitable for children from age 10 upwards (an estimate!). If only it could be played with more players (you have to buy the expansion packs, but even these only add a 5th player).

8.4.2016

This game is great fun and offers huge re-playability and depth to boardgame fans whilst being easy to teach and enjoy with non-boardgame-players.The manual is well written and clear, particularly is its organisation that makes getting into the game quick and easy.A very generous box of stuff with loads of nice cardboard pieces, handfulls of sturdy little plastic astronauts and wooden cargo cubes. I had reservations over the £35+ price but you definitely get your money's worth.Highly recommended.

19.3.2014

This game is a lot of fun. The first few times you will inevitably watch your poorly built spaceship getting smashed to bits. All you can do is laugh! It's a game you definitely get better at the more you play.A word of warning. I ordered this game from an Amazon trader and when it arrived it was in German! Thankfully the game is not text heavy and relies mostly on symbols. Although we did have to download an English version of the rules. Double check before you buy.

Took the day off work to wait for this to arrive and was checking Amazon hourly. Was not disappointed.Played it with the wife and a friend in the evening and it was incredibly fun, lots of laughs and we picked up the rules quick. The game is decided in 3 stages; build your ship (which is stressful), space travel (which can be hilarious) and then calculating your credits.Such a good game, cannot recommend more.Lost half my ship by being hit by a tiny asteroid.

26.8.2018

This is one of the best games of the 'modern board gaming renaissance'. Its indescribable fun to watch your friend break down into hysterics as every single crew cabin on his ship is shot off by a single meteor swarm, or blow up on the final card, just before you get home. Just make sure that whoever you play it with enjoys schadenfreude, and doesn't mind dying in space on the second card due to a rogue cannon blast detaching half their ship.

5.5.2013

This game is really original. You build a spaceship by picking tiles and joining them togehter in a race against other opponents and your design often seems to go wrong. You then fly your ships through space watching it get battered by meteors, aliens, etc. Everyone suffers and you get to laugh a lot at each others misfortune. The quality of the game is beautiful and it is easy to learn. A bit pricy but well worth it.

25.8.2016

Excellent game, simple to play but in the heat of the moment it becomes devillishly hard. The instruction manual is a great and enjoyable read (for once) especially if you're a fan of hitch hikers guide to the galaxy or red dwarf.Grab you friend(s), go through the practice run and then go on from there. After the 2nd or 3rd attempt you'll get the hang of it and become addicted.Great game, can't recommend it enough.
