As owners of four dogs, we have bought many of these in the past and always gone with the tape as it is (alledgedly) better the cord and purchased from the smaller and cheaper brands right up to the more renown and expensive brands such as Flexi. To be honest we have found little issue with the cheaper brands and only noticed that the build quality is a little better as is the comfort levels on the Flexi brand but even these do not come without one major flaw that can be found when using with persistent pullers and medium+ sized dogs with a little strength. This issue involves 'slipping' after a while when engaging the stop. The ideal period of use from new on these retractable leads is 18 monthsbut we have never made it anywhere near that length of time before needing to replace on the lead used by our medium sized but strong Beagle despite ordering the next weight size up.Although training has slowed his tendency to pull, he still utilises his strength when releasing the extent of the lead for a run. With a new lead you encounter no issues as such wbut after a couple of months on each and every retractable lead we have purchased, we begin to experience an increasing case of 'slipping.By slipping I mean where you engage the lock on the lead and rather than stop the dog immediately, the lead gives a stretching sensation where the lead slips a short distance (around half a meter in our experience) which can be particularly worrying around roads. You will notice that I have given a four star rating to this lead which I feel it does deserve because the product is really well made, looks great and is of a great build quality and finally because I do not think this is a fault of Flexi but more in the overall design of retractable leads from any company in relation to larger or stronger dogs.To sum up I would not hesitate to recommend Flexi retractable leads as we honestly think they are a great brand but please be aware of the potential slipping issues, which we have encountered with all brands, and ensure that your dog is fully secure near roads or other hazards... to combat this we use a standard training lead for the road section of the walk and change to retractable for more open and safer areas to allow them to run as a reward for the obedience on the roadside.

Been using it a wee while and had a recent incident which tested it to the max! The tape is a bright colour so you'll definitely stand out while using it and pedestrians can't miss the lead if they're walking by. It's also very sturdy, having gone through a month of what the old lead endured without any sign of fraying or wear, which is good. The clip is sturdy and easy to retract and the tangle free design works pretty well. There are some tangles and zoomies a dog will find to bunch up the tape and cause it to stop retracting but I've found simply pulling the tape out a little allows the tangle to free itself and for the tape to retract. It does so quickly with a certain tension to the line so took a short while for my boy to adjust to having that light pull on his collar, but he's happy with it now, especially as he gets off the lead most of the time and only really has it on while we're walking along the road.So the incident was him spotting another dog and running full pelt at it, pulling me into a nearby lamppost which caused me to drop the lead. The lead, slowly, but surely, retracted up to his feet, which caused him to be startled and run furiously from this weird blue thing chasing him. A few manic minutes and a bruised rib later, everything was back under control and the lead was, mostly, unharmed. One of the clips near the handle had snapped which means it isn't a tight closure anymore, however there are enough clips holding the plastic together that it hasn't effected the performance any. The remaining scratches on the handle are cosmetic which is impressive given it spent a good couple of minutes bouncing over cobblestones! Needless to say, having a strong puppy can be hard work but, with this lead, we're both getting there.

I bought the Large 8m tape in June for a strong, rescue Lab. The lead has been great for walking him on the beach and it often gets wet in the sea and covered in sand and salt (I'm wondering if that makes the lead more tasty to him!). Design-wise it is great, fast and easy locking button, although the lock-slide could be a little easier to operate. It's quite heavy (but then it's a large etc) and it's useful to have the option of adding poo bags to the underneath and a torch to the side. I'm going to have to watch the spring in the metal clasp as that is starting to seize up (due to the salty seawater etc).My main issue is that it seems pretty easy for a dog to chew through.I used to attach a short bungee to the end that seemed to have preserved this for quite a few months; however, recently I removed this and then saw that my dog seems to like to hold the lead in his mouth when charging around when it's extended, cutting slightly through the tape. After that I inspected it after each walk. The other day he was being a little bugger, wrapping himself up in it and had a good chomp on the tape. He only had it in his mouth for about a minute but managed to chew almost all the way through in that time - so beware of this.Luckily it's quite easy to chop a stretch off and retie it to the clasp so it's still perfectly usable. However, I am now considering added a short metal chain extension to save the the tape from his mouth (which will be fine until he wraps himself up again!). I'm wondering whether a rope version would last better than the tape for when I do replace this?

I bought this lead in blue for my german shepherd x labrador, I chose this one as both my husband and I walk the dog and this has an adjustable hand grip - the grip is large enough for my husbands huge hands, and I can adjust it easily using the dial to fit my smaller hands, though most of the time I don't bother as it's very comfy to hold without adjusting. The button on top is large, easy to press and comfortable and the switch to lock the lead easy to use and holds in place firmly. The tape is wide an of good quality, we've been using it for a month now and it's still in great shape - no visible fraying and the stitches are still fully in place, though as it's black it can be difficult to see the tape in the dark. The clip can be a little fiddly when wet but is strong. The only downsides are that the spinner that stops the tape twisting doesn't work perfectly - but then I've only ever found one lead that does - though that said it doesn't interfere with the functioning of the retraction, so it's not too much of an issue. One thing to bear in mind is that as it's tape in strong winds it can be pulled a bit by the wind due to the surface area - this doesn't really affect anything much but every now and then the lead may bow in the wind. The lead as a whole unti is sturdy - I've lost count of the number of times we've dropped it on to carpet/bricks/concrete and it's still working perfectly. The texture is nice to hold and it looks good too, I would definitely buy this product again.

I am very skeptical of retractable leads as I have always been told how dangerous they are for other people and for dogs. I considered getting a cord one as I have a long haired Keeshond, but after reading about burns and cuts caused by cord retractables I decided to go with a tape one. I have been using it for just over a month now, and so far I think it's a great good quality product.Pros:- Retracts easily even if the tape twists- Fluorescent blue colour means it's easy to see so farmers and people know the dog is on lead- When needing to grab the tape, the friction isn't too bad as the material is soft- Great for training puppy for a good recall- Doesn't get caught in long fur due to sleek material- Long,8m length, meaning I can play ball with my puppy quite happilyCons:- Very heavy - heavier than a cord retractable - but this might be a sign of good quality tape, and it is 8m. This does mean my hand starts aching after a while- "Comfortable" feature is pointless for very small hands- Quite big, but again this might be needed for the amount of tape- Retractables are quite frowned upon - make sure you use them on a harness and NEVER a collar or halti as you can hurt your dogAlways make sure your dog's temperament is appropriate for a retractable. I'd recommend doing research before investing in a retractable either way to understand the set backs and positives. All in all a good product and worth the money. And the colour matches my treat bag!

Excellent product!I purchased the teal coloured leash, 50 kg for my one year old, extremely active, strong and nimble Staffie. At first sight the products looks similar to any other extendable leash. The 50kg model is fairly big but despite its size remain very comfortable and lightweight. The rope is flat and made from what I am assuming to be some kind of nylon. At first I was terrified, the rope is thin and I wasn't sure it would suffice to hold my dog back as he is very strong and quite the puller. However I've not seen any sign of breaking or tearing on the leash and the added range has helped a lot with his behaviour. The mechanism is great. It feels snappy and sleek. The dog can pull on it from any angle and it doesn't get tangled or blocked. For those who think the handle might be too big this is great because it means you can lower your arm and keep it in a resting position most of the time without having to keep your arm extended. If you are thinking of buying this product do not hesitate any longer, great stuff. The leash is not marketed as reflective but the bright teal colour makes it easy to see in the daylight and I have noticed it to cast back a bit of light in the dark. Not much but maybe enough for a careless cyclist to notice it in low lightThe black box under it is another product. Nothing to write home about, it snaps in place in a little alcove and can be used for storing pop bags or treat. I personally use it for treats.

I bought the medium weight as my dog is a hefty puller on the lead, and the 5m long one. I used to have the 3m, but the 5m seems even better. I feel any longer you would not be able to have any control if you needed it, so 5m is good.I was not impressed with the colour selection on offer, I bought the green which is nice, its not too bright. The lead seems well made, it is easy to use, there is a little instruction booklet that comes with it, but actually if you are not used to this type of lead it is worth watching a quick video on Youtube on how to use it correctly, it is worth knowing how to use it properly, because it is pretty nifty.I have smallish hands for a woman,so the adjustable setting for the grip size is actually really good, it allows you to access the buttons/switch on the top without having to twist your hand or stretch. I have used the Flexi leads which do not have the adjustable grip size, and it is worth paying a tiny bit more for. It appears to only be an option on the medium & large size leads.

My main fear with retractable leads is the dreaded 'snapping' while on a walk, so i put off buying one for ages. Sadly my dog is not one i could really let of the lead so i caved and went for the longest i could find to give him some freedom while down the park. He's only a medium size dog, so he didn't need the large, but it was the only one for the length i wanted. It's not too heavy, the tape seems pretty sturdy from what i can tell, and i'm glad you can adjust it to fit smaller size hands. It does feel kind of clunky to hold, but i kind of expect it from all retractable leads. The locking mechanism works fine, i do agree that it does give a small amount before it stops completely, but i never use this walking along side the roads anyway, so it doesn't affect us too much.Despite the fact i'd still rather take a traditional lead over a retractable, if you happen to want to give your dog that sensation of almost freedom on a lead, i'd happily recommend one of these.

i understand that some people have had problems with this lead snapping. i have the grey 8m lead rated up to 50kg. My dog is a German shepherd that i rescued. she has problems which over the years i have been able to help her with. The only one which is still a fatcor but not as bad as when she first come home is she does not like any other dogs. i tried lots of different leads to help me and Lexi from normal leads to metal chain leads all to harness. This in my view didn't give any freedom for her to walk and sniff every 5 seconds. I found out about this lead did some reading and got one. i have never looked back the lead is the best thing for her, its short when it need to be some she can listen to me (this helps her with reacting to other dogs) and longer up to the full 8m when i can see around us so and no other dogs are in the area. the brake and lock have never failed me. Due to its age i am now going to replace it with the same one. thanks for reading

Needed a reputable extendable lead for my 26kg Labrador, after the mechanism of the previous two from a discount supermarket broke. Seeked this German-made brand out after speaking with other dog owners looking for a recommendation. There's so many "junk brands" online these days it's difficult to find genuine quality products at a good price. I bought the 8m one for dogs up to 50kg, it was half the price of the equivalent at Pets At Home and far more sturdy then my previous ones which also claimed suitability for dogs up to 50kg. Like others have said, the adjustable handle thing is a bit daft and adds unnecessary parts and cost to an otherwise excellent product. My only gripe is the clanking noise of the mechanism when the lead is in locked position - it's quite loud.Despite these couple of issues I'm very happy with this lead, and confident using it with my dog. Wouldn't hesitate to buy again, recommended.

Possibly the best lead I've used. Some leads feel like the mechanism is jerking inside when the dog pulls but this one seem significantly more sturdy. This is particularly important if you've got a big dog or one that pulls a lot. I presume that the larger models would be stronger still.I feel a lot more comfortable with the tape version to the string as i've seen a string unwind, he model I bought was the tap lead but felt stronger still than my previous one. Almost a thicker, stronger weave.I know there was a previous model, between the classic and this one that broke a bit. I don't have any concern with this one, plus it is fully compatible with all the extras you can get, like the light (which i have and is also pretty handy) and the bag/treat holder. Definitely one of the better leads on the market.

I was a little worried our dog would pull and break this but as we have worked on recall she is fine, we run with her with it and she come back when she feels tensions and seems to have no issue with its strenth, the added carrier for bags is brill, although can slip of if not carefull, only thing is wish it had loop to hold her when we have her closer, I have to take two leads out with me. This one for country walks and the beach and short one as it has second handle closer to the coller to keep better control, its not the lead design fault, just be handy if it had the two handles like our other lead and would then feel more stable if you want better control or grip close up,saying that we love the freedom this lead gives to our beautiful dog,

Bought to replace the initial lead we had which was bought originally and intended for a smaller dog and beginning to fail due to the size of our current dogs. This lead is brilliant! I cannot recommend it enough! More than study enough to deal with a growing puppy which will wind up somewhere between 35-40kg and the locking mechanism is really easy to use.The bright colour of the lead tape also helps you keep track of where the lead is and stands out at night with an almost glow in the dark feel to it. (This really helps us keep track of our dog in the dark as his colouring helps him vanish quite quickly.)All in all superb lead which is worth the money and looks to be set to last a number ofyears even under hard wear and tear.

Some reviews on here about Flexi leads snapping. If your dog pulls or is large, then when the lead is extended there is a chance it will break. There is no such thing as an unbreakable lead.I have a few Flexi leads over 10 years old so they do last.I got this Large 10m 60kg Flexi for a dog with a high prey drive that pulls alot. The main handle is very big. There is an adjustable grip mechanism but even fully open it only just fits my large hand (male). With this lead I have decided to walk my pulling dog with the lead not extended. Hopefully this means it won't break. I will have to fix his pulling.I still think Flexi are the best even without extending the lead.I like the large handles as it gives me more control.

I have no idea why we didn’t buy this sooner. After many years of having a fixed length leash which didn’t allow any freedom for our beloved dog and having to endure tugging on our poor hands, this has made our regular walks so much more enjoyable for both of us. I think we were under the misapprehension that we would have difficulty in recoiling the leash and putting her in danger but we were proven wrong. The handle and control are well made and very comfortable to hold. The lead tape itself is sturdy and doesn’t feel like it’s going to snap or tear inadvertently - we chose the model suggested for our dog’s size (she’s a Jack Russell)and it’s perfect.A great product and highly recommended.
