I have a 9 year old and an 11 year old and they both enjoy the game, as I do. It was a bit tricky at first working out the scoring, and I had to read the rules a few times to be sure I was playing that and the tile laying elements correctly. The rules are only 5 pages long, which is good, and the other parts of the rules were very clear, but scoring for already placed rooms and downstairs rooms took a few reads. The actual game itself flows well, with enough tactical decision making to keep us all interested, particularly when its your turn to act as Master Builder and set the price for the different rooms available for purchase. Set too high a price for the rooms most likely to be interest to your opponents and you may get no buys and no money, set the price too low and your opponent gains more than you. Similarly if a room is of particular interest to you what price should you set? Too low and an opponent may take it before you get the chance, too high and you put your opponents off but pay a lot for it yourself. The actual laying out of the rooms as you add them to your castle needs care to get the best score possible and try to secure bonuses for completing rooms (connecting all doors to other rooms). The use of special secret bonus score cards gives an air of mystery right to the end as its never quite clear until then who's definitely won. Altogether a great game, with plenty of re-playability. And it's fun at the end looking at the weird castle everyone creates, requiring you to go through a dungeon or a garden to get from your bedroom to the bathroom, or similar oddity!

The game itself is fantastic, pretty much every time we play it we end up having another game straight after. It is not a luck based game although there is enough randomness to add variety. While there is competition between players to buy pieces it's normally your own fault if you have a low scoring castle. The hidden bonus cards work well and mean that even though one person might appear to be streaking ahead, you don't really know who's won until the end.Works best with 3 or 4 players as 2 players can be a bit predictable. This sounds like a really pernickety thing to knock a star off for but the component design is really poor. There is no box insert to keep things tidy, instead you are provided with a load of ziplock bags to keep the pieces in. The money consists of tiny bits of cardboard that we have replaced with poker chips which are much easier to handle and don't get lost as easily. The rules are also quite poorly worded and difficult to understand first time round. However I've only played with one person that was still struggling with the concepts after the first game.I would say don't let the poor design put you off, it is a great game but it might be worth holding off buying it and waiting for an updated edition with some better components.

I am a huge board game geek. I have a lot of games and every Christmas I like to treat myself to a new game. I checked board game geek and found this game which looked very appealing. The aim of the game is to get the most points, and you do this by building a castle with rooms, taking heed of what the King wants (i.e. more slumber rooms, or high square footage of downstairs rooms). Its a game that doesn't have dice, each turn instead consisting of the master builder drawing rooms, setting prices for the rooms (there's a bit of strategy involved here, you want to make the desirable rooms expensive enough to reflect their value but cheap enough that people will buy them and give you money),and then taking it in turns to purchase and lay the room tiles. It was quite a different game from others on the market and if you like games like Powergrid, Castles of Burgundy and Settlers of Catan then I think you will also enjoy the Castles of Mad King Ludwig. The only problem I have with this was the cost which I thought was steep at over fifty pounds.

Review of the game: I've had a lot of fun playing Castles, outside of scoring it's fun to see who's Castle makes the most sense logically, or the exact opposite. You never know what tiles are going to come up so you get lots of variety and some funny (or awesome) castles. As a board game this is definitely something my group plays over and over for some light hearted fun. If you enjoy a game that isn't strictly about your skill as a player and enjoy a game that has luck involved then I definitely recommend it.Review of the physical product: 99% of the product was perfect, unfortunately one of the cardboard tokens (or whatever it's made out of) was physically deformed (not due to pushing it out wrong)which makes it difficult to use since everyone knows what it is. Specifically one of the Kings Favor tiles was somehow very deformed (shape) so everyone knows when that specific favor is being drawn before even seeing it... we ended up taking it out of rotation entirely :(

Everyone who has played this game with me has liked it. Each player builds a castle (single storey but with optional cellars) comprising different room shapes and sizes. Players take it in turns to be 'master builder', selling the rooms they have constructed to the other players. The pricing of the rooms is a key part of the strategy. Bonus tiles drawn at the start of the game means that the desirability of the different room types varies each time you play. It's the sort of game where even if you don't do very well you can still enjoy constructing a castle. The set is well produced: the group I play with 'snacks'a lot and the Audience Room got covered with a sticky substance but became as good as new after a wipe with a damp cloth.

Really good fun. Hood to play in two and four player, although not tried three players yet. Rules aren't too complicated and easy to learn. Scoring might take a second play through but definitely worth it. In a house that loves Carcassonne(and its many expansions added) and ticket to ride, this game has easily joined those among our favourites. A game generally lasts about 60 to 70 minutes once you've got the hang of it. Very impressed with the game but disappointed in that all the parts are left loose in the box to slide around. Beautiful artwork in the game and its great fun building your own castle, just remember to keep an eye on what bonus points you can get by strategic placing of rooms.

You are a castle architect, trying to please a mad king. He might decide he wants a castle with as many round rooms as possible, or as many bedrooms as you can fit in. In addition, each player has been given secret objectives as well as the common objectives. Players take it in turns to be the master builder, setting the prices of all the available rooms for that turn. The rooms are suitably crazy, such as the Mold Room, which might adjoin a Pink Closet. One thing to bear in mind is it requires quite a large table (the room pool and score board alone take up half our table).

I really enjoy this game; each playthrough is quite different so it has kept my interest for over 18 months so far. The expansion adds even more variability, too. The one weakness is box organisation; the game has very many parts that need to be organised into about 12 piles before play, and yet there is nothing provided (e.g. bags/trays) to help keep these parts separate. To solve this I very highly recommend the wooden box organisers made by "The Broken Token":

This is an amazing game! Takes a while to set up, but no two games are alike. With different goals and different rooms, you never know what you're castle is going to look like. It's a race for points, trying to trump your opponent, stealing rooms when you know they want them, but trying to keep an eye on your own score as well. Very beautiful artwork, you get the craziest layouts for your castle. It became an instant classic.

I brought this as a recommendation from a friend after asking about a good family game for all ages, I have not regretted this purchase lovely looking tiles and a easy pick up and play for all ages I play with my children (and they can be ruthless) ages from 9-14 and they can all easily understand the pricing system of the rooms. Highly recommend lovely game.

Very good game as you can play either the full version, which will give you lots of levels to consider when building your castle, or you could easily make it simpler and play just the castle building itself which then would possibly be suitable even for younger children.

We have played many rounds since purchasing. I first heard about this game early this year but waited for a birthday to purchase due to the price and it is so worth it! Only negative is four player maximum.

Love it! It has become our game of the moment. My husband and I have board games going back to the 50's so I can honestly say we are well versed. We love this game and can certainly recommend it
