Buying this device was something of a gamble for me. The AK4497 chipset was very new. The desired small format had often disappointed when put into a highly resolving system. And could it really do streamer, DAC, headphone amp and pre-amplification with the sort of competence the marketing suggested? I am very pleased to say, the answer was yes!I am presently using the NT-505 as the front end for Ncore NC400 amplification. This was previously driven by a balanced passive pre-amplifier and the Teac loses none of the benefits of doing things this way. The music emerges from a totally silent background and the sound staging does alter a little but not to any real detriment of the music. The headphone amp is a little gem.I use the following headphones:Sennheiser HD650Audio Technica ATH-W5000Verum Audio Verum 1The HD650 are very much an audio standard. You would expect any amp to be able to drive these. Indeed I would expect a pair of 600/650’s on the test bench at any headphone amp manufacturer. The ATH-W5000 are notoriously power hungry and prone to sounding thin and slipping into sibilance when the amp isn’t up to the job. Again the NT-505 does a good job. Finally the Verum 1’s are a hand built startup venture planar magnetic design. They are very low impedance but once again the Teac doesn’t miss a beat. The streaming section of the NT-505 is where I was really smitten though. I am an avid Roon user, and until recently had subscriptions to both Tidal and Qobuz. I was able to put this DAC through its paces with locally held files, Tidal plus MQA and Qobuz with HD Audio (FLAC encoded PCM at up to 192/24. The results were always good, and Roon bypassed the native Teac app with its excellent interface. The two went very well and it was obvious a lot of work went into ensuring the two worked together seamlessly. For me there is a lot to like about this streamer/DAC. I purchased it to reduce box count and it does that spectacularly well. Streamer, DAC and pre-amp plus associated power supplies reduced to a single mains powered box. Excellent DAC performance, a great streamer with the right software and a more than able headphone amp. If I have a reservation it is the lack of an analogue input. It’s pure DAC sibling, the UD-505 does have this plus an apparently even more capable headphone section but the space required is used for the streamer hardware in the NT-505. I got around this by luck. My phono stage also does PCM or DSD conversion. So it plumbs into the coaxial input of the NT-505 and voila! I have my records available when in the mood.
