This an absolutely lovely camcorder, and great for a first time camcorder user like myself. Previously I've only ever had experience of using other peoples, so this is something new for myself. What I will say about this camcorder first of all is it's very light. Surprisingly light in fact. But on the plus side, I was wandering around on holiday and could easily hold it without any issues, or my hand getting tired/sore. Even with the hand strap, I did make sure I had a good grip on it.It's remarkably easy to work, although I did have a couple of issues getting it set up with the time and date, just while trying to work the toggle button on the viewfinder. I think a touch screen would have been easier,as that's what I'm currently used to, but I'm steadily getting used to it, and gave it a good workout while I was away. The memory card is not where you initially expect to find it, and this confused me no end to begin with. (Try reading the instructions?!) When you fold out the viewfinder, you can find the memory card slot in here, which wasn't obvious to a non-instruction manual reader like myself. But once you know where it is, you don't need to worry. This is brilliant for taking still photos too, although sometimes the stabilization isn't as great as it is as recording. For someone like myself, who has notoriously shaky hands, especially when I'm nervous, the stabilization on this is perfect, and I'm really pleased with that aspect of it. I did find that a couple of my still photos weren't entirely perfect, but that may have just been me getting used to it. It was only a small majority of the photos I took however. You can also take photos while recording, which I made good use of, and the quality of these are great too.As expected, this has an amazing zoom, but the further you zoom in on a far away subject, the less the stabilization will work. You really need to have a steady hand, if you want to film far in the distance, or if you want to zoom really close in on something. I got a good close up recording of a bee (don't ask me why, it was there, this was in my hand, I wanted to see what I could do) and also recorded some ducks, but the zoom will take a bit of getting used to and a bit of practise. From when I have been recording, and picked up either my voice, or general noise around me, I have to say that the sound is very clear and sharp. I haven't had much practise with the sound, and haven't tried really speaking directly to the camera. However, it picked up my voice when I was whispering about the bee, and it came through quite clear.I haven't quite managed the art of hitting the record button just yet. (But again, practice makes perfect.) As I'm right handed, the hand strap is convenient for me, but where the record button is, it should be easy to press it with your thumb, but I have found it quite difficult to get used to do that. Normally I'm pressing record with another hand. But I'm sure I will get used, or find an easy way to handle it, so my thumb is in the right place to just hit record whenever I'm ready to go.I haven't needed to turn the viewfinder around just yet, but I'm slightly concerned about doing so, as I already mentioned, the camera is very light, and I'm just worried about breaking it when I only got it for my birthday in April. To go with this, I bought the recommended bag First2savvv anti-shock camcorder carry case bag with should strap for SONY HDR-CX240E with mini tripod, however, while it is perfect for this size of camcorder, it's a little small if you want to be carrying around anything extra.I'm sure as I get more used to this, I will find it easier to use, and not quite as awkward. It's just the newness, from someone who's always been used to digital cameras before, to jump from this to a camcorder. But I'm looking forward to trying it out more and having fun with it!

Ordered this camera for badminton and other sentimental reasons. It does everything I need it to do.With FHD recording at both 50i and 50p the videos look great on big screen and badminton isn't blurry thanks to the 50fps.The battery lasts me around two hours of recording which more than enough but if it ever ran out I can just plug it into my power bank. The battery can also be swapped out for another too.It supports class 10 micro SDHC cards up to 64gb (I think) which is great as I use a 32gb micro SDHC. Videos save fast and in big durations and quantities for a FHD 50fps video(s).The hand strap can be adjusted accordingly to your hand size for a comfortable perfect fit.The screen can be rotated for any "selfie" recordings, etc too.The camera also features a mini HDMI port to get your videos and pictures up on big screen without having to do any importing or whatnot. This also comes with USB extension cable (male female) as the built in charging cable is very short. Don't forget the USB mains adapter is included too. Also a HDMI to HDMI mini cable is included (male male). Proper Sony branded cables and no cheap third party rubbish. Two things I found which may prove to be a problem for others although doesn't bother me are; the lens cover isn't automatic and has to be opened and closed manually. Additionally, the photo capture button is quite sensitive and located close to the zoom slider so can be triggered easily by accident.

If you are looking for a low cost high quality camera then you have to get one of these, the HD quality zoom is pin sharp, the battery life is as long as a 16gb memory card. The LUX setting for dark corners is ideal for those visits to castles and for those who want something for creepy 'ghost hunting' the infered is great for using a black light. Don't be put off by the light weight and plastic feel its a big step up from Sony video cameras from yesteryear. The anti-shake is perfect but if you are going to use the great zoom I would get a tripod to steady it, the fittings for a momo or tripods are there for you to use. I have had many video cameras over the years and for the price you cannot get better.Transfer to the PC is easy and quick, a massive difference from waiting for tape to transfer. Now for the annoying bits, it creeks, plastic on plastic when you trying to operate the zoom which feeds back onto the recording same creeking if you move hands. Score over all 9/10.....

This is a great piece of kit from Sony. Small and lightweight, it's just perfect for the amateur user who doesn't need all the bells and whistles on a more expensive camcorder. This is a basic camcorder with no frills, which means it's easy to use and has everything you need to take great quality videos in 1080p resolution (not 4k - Which is a waste of time anyway...)The menu system is easy to navigate using the responsive joystick (not a touch screen) and there isn't even an on/off button, just close the screen and it switches itself off - How cool is that? The lens cover is integrated into the camera body, which is much better than a separate cover. The zoom is really powerful, and features anti-shake,handy if you don't have a tripod available.I haven't given this a proper test yet, but I'll be taking it to Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, so that should be a great way to get to know this excellent camera.Five stars from me, nice one Sony!Read full review...

i bought this recently to film an aircraft.i wanted something compact ,good zoom, preferably hd easy and quick to use.i bought it saturday and set it up within 30 minutes.sunday i filmed the aircraft i had intended and as it went into the distance i was able to zoom in and follow it for longer.i was able to select and take stills from the video i had filmed once i had got home. i found it takes good quality photos aswell .it has a fold out screen so you see what you are filming.i have since tried filming different scenes day and night and it performs amazingly.for its price you ca,nt go wrong, ideal for a beginner and easy to use.videos are easy to download and edit and can be stored on a memory card or transferred to disc if needs be.the only thing it lacks is a built in light ,so at night you will need light to film your subjects.but i would recommend this to anyone wanting to buy a good quality camcorder.

Good value for an HD camera. You need to buy a memory card but they are not too expensive. I use it for videoing school concerts and I have two of these. I was so pleased with the first one that I bought this one. One thing to be aware of is that due to limitations of the formatting system on the memory cards every 20 minutes or so it will start a new HD file. There is a very small break in the recording at this point. This will only occur if you are videoing continuously for that length of time because if you pause and restart it starts a new file anyway. If you use the standard resolution files it also creates, the length is about an hour per file.I don't know if the standard resolution files join seamlessly because I haven't yet recorded more that an hour continuously. I have a standard resolution JVC and the files on that are seamless. The optical zoom is greater than for many cheap HD cameras.

I bought this Sony handycam to replace a broken more expencive Jvc one. I was worried it wouldn't be as good but, im very pleased to say it has many more features than my old faithful one had. The zoom is smooth and silent, and because its an optical zoom unlike most low price camcorders that only have digital ones the result is a very clear picture. The anti shake feature gives a nice steady picture upto about half its optical zoom capacity then its advisable to use a tripod. I love the internal editing feature where you can move the order of scenes or delete one section easily. The only reason ive given it 4 instead of 5 stars is the outer body of the camcorder has a cheapish plastic feel about it,so i have bought a well padded bag for it, and i imagine ill get many good years filming out of it. I highly recomend it as a low price, high spec camcorder.

I bought the camera just over a week ago and have used it several times. Here are my findings.1. On opening the box everything was laid out well, good presentation.2. When I picked up the camera my initial thoughts was that it seemed quite flimsy but that is not the case it is just very light in the hand and I think that this gives that flimsy impression.3. In my opinion the key to comfortably using this camera is having the strap fitting your hand, at first I found it difficult to get my fingers in the right position to be able to take a photo, however, adjusting the hand strap made a huge difference4. The screen is excellent and the menu intuitive5.The battery life is good and spares are very affordable. The zoom function is fluid which is a bonusAll in all I think this is a nice little camera that I will use on a daily basis.

This was purchased to replace the same model which was accidentally damaged. This review is of my previous CX240E. This is an excellent camcorder. It fits easily in the pocket and can be instantly available for something unexpected or as a backup HD camcorder. Unfortunately it does not have an external microphone input but sound quality from the on board microphone is surprisingly good. Automatic focusing and automatic exposure can be a little slow sometimes but you have to make some allowances for the cost of the camcorder. The powered zoom control is excellent - really smooth. All things considered, this is well worth the money. The lack of an external microphone input is disappointing so I can only give four stars.

Great little camera,Video quality is amazing for it's size, very easy to use although the default settings are not great as first video created was awful dur to the defaultsettings, after changing the default settings and selected avchd and most important make sure that you have the 1080p mode selected not 1080i.Only problem i found with this camera does not record great in low light due to the size of the image sensor,A branded smart phone would do much better in low light, other than that very pleased.myself do have other camcorders that are prosumer standard but find them a bit big in some situations to carry around. This little sony cx240e is great when on the move out and about and carry itanywhere

I am very pleased with this Camcorder. I am an older person but it was very easy to follow instructions and get started immediately. I like the quality of my movie of the Queensferry Crossing and the Forth Road Bridge. I simply plugged into my TV to watch. I also downloaded the movie editing software recommended in the instruction booklet. It downloaded to my laptop no problem and I found this easy to pick up too. I am yet to try the time lapse which is the reason I chose this one. I like all the different adapters, these are very useful. You have to buy a SD card separately but you have a variety to choose from. I got the card with the most memory.Looking forward to recording happy holidays.

After a lot of thought, and a lot of research, I purchased this camcorder to improve my YouTube videos. I'd previously been recording using my iphone, so this was quite a change for me.The face tracking software on the screen is perfect for my needs, and as I can spin it over, I can see what's recording. Previously I was having to set up, record a clip, go back, view, adjust until I was happy. This saves so much time! It's small and light, so easily portable. Also comes with all the gubbins to attach to a tripod (a must for stable videos!), I'm delighted with my purchase. I'd recommend to anyone who wanted a step up from their phone.

I haven't had a camcorder before, this is so easy to set up and use. The zoom is brilliant and the picture and sound is really crisp. Yes the camera is plastic but it is really light and dose not make your arm ache, it is a handy cam. I also bought the case. It charges easily and I put the videos on the TV in a second. I am very happy I chose this camera I will not miss precious moments. I used a 64gb card with no problems. The screen is clear and the menu simple. I am not too tech savvy and I found it easy. There is a built in lens cover and the camera tells you if you leave it on! Happy days. I recommend this camera to anyone.

I bought this camera about a month ago. I wanted a camera to record grandchildren, holidays etc. so did not want to pay a lot of money. So far it seems to do the job very well. It is very light and first impressions were that it was a little flimsy, however this has not proved to be the case. It is very easy to use but 'hand shake' can be a problem if using the telephoto facility. Also in bright sunshine the viewing screen can be difficult to see properly, although I imagine you may have the same problem with more expensive cameras. Overall I am very happy with the product.

I bought this handy-cam especially for making engineering videos for YouTube. My Son already had this camera so I knew it was very good. Straight out of the box it was very easy to get used to the controls. Most of my videos are taken in my workshop under artificial lighting, which the camera handles perfectly. I have mainly used it on auto setting and have produced twelve videos so far that I am really pleased with and have published on YouTube. Have had over 1000 views in a month! Its a great camera and has an excellent lens. So pleased I bought it.
