I was fortunate to get one of these quite cheaply from a friend who works at Sony, otherwise I'm not sure if I'd have gone for it, considering you pay over the odds for the Sony name (as far as I can tell). Despite this, I did a lot of research before I bought this camcorder and the two features that swayed me were the low-level light sensitivity and the optical stabilisation. To take each in turn:1. The low-light sensitivity is quite amazing. It is far better than any other camera or camcorder I have ever owned. I videoed an evening family meal outdoors with just a 60W lamp illuminating the whole table from above. The recording is almost faithful to one's eyes. There is little grain and certainly no low-light judder that you get from conventional camcorders. Astounding.2. The stabilisation is equally astonishing. It really has to be seen to be believed. I did a quick test to see how well it performed by shaking the camera up and down quite violently whilst videoing. The playback only gave a tiny hint at what was going on whilst recording. It almost looked as if the camera had been gently buffeted by the wind - at *most*. The result is that my family no longer feel sea-sick after seeing all my camcorder footage. The only negative points I can think of (apart from the price) are the quality of the stills. Even though it's a 7.1MP chip, the pictures are not up to a dedicated stills camera. Zoom into a picture and you soon see that either the the JPG compression setting is fairly high or the DPI is very low. Leaves on trees dissolve into pixellated shades of green and wrinkles on skin mysteriously disappear. Some people may appreciate the latter, I don't know! The other negative point is the menu system. I know they have to fit a whole load of features on there but you need smallish fingers to avoid hitting two options at once sometimes. That said, if you configure the 'My Menu' feature then this becomes less of a problem. If you'd like some sample photos/videos then please send me a comment. So, in summary:Good1. Low-light sensitivity2. Optical stabilisation3. Widescreen lens - fits more of the scene in4. HD video quality5. Small and compact6. Flip the screen out to power-on7. Fast to start upBad1. Stills quality2. Fiddly menu at times3. Retail price

Product arrived next day and I was pleased with its compact size and with its ease of use on automatic settings, the reproduction is quite stunning when played back on a HD tv and using the software supplied I burned a dvd with no problems. I am glad I purchased a second battery as using the camcorder in HD mode only allows around 120 mins running time per battery. I purchased a battery charger at the same time, which allows charging from a car 12v socket as well as mains power, which I think most people will find useful if they use a lot of their camcorder. Remember if you intend purchasing a memory card, you must get a 4 speed or above if using an SD card, but to be honest given the built in 32gb flash card external memory shouldn't be needed.Yes the camcorder is a little expensive, though one saves quite a lot on Amazon compared to the high street, it still makes it a considered purchase. If you do decide to buy, you wont regret it. A good well built camcorder from a well respected manufacturer with much expertise in the camcorder field.

I needed an upgrade to my Sony DV camera which I have had for years. Needed something for an upcoming trip to the US which was smaller, took better stills, and had a greater capacity. So far, this camera hits the spot. The quality is great, the supplied software is surprisingly well-written for Sony and recognises that there are other devices in use other than those made by Sony - a big improvement! The one downside is that there is no 'mic in' jack - silly to leave this out. This is picked up by on-line reviews so my eyes were open to this when I bought the camera. There are some nice Sony microphone attachements, so maybe a future birthday present :-).Overall, highly recommended as a top of the middle range video camera.Good buy from Amazon at an incredibile price - I see that they are going up since I bought it!

Its not black, its burgundy. A little naughty to say its black, but it has a nice matt finish. The menu's are a little tricky to master initially, but once you have the hang of it you can set the most popular or used settings in My Menu.

I'm going to keep it short and sweet. This was an upgrade from the Sony HDR-TG7.
