Penn Battle II 8000, made the purchase a little while back and couldn't be happier. It's a great reel with a lot of strength. I purchased this reel for saltwater surf fishing and have definitely put it through its paces. The non-corrosive design and line capacity were big selling points, Penn makes great products, and the overall specs on this reel were too great to pass up. I have been very happy with it!Only draw back is that they don't sell it with the Live Line feature. However, for a little more you can get the Penn Spinfisher V in the same size and rule the beachfront while your wife is yelling at you for "unnecessary purchases."Ha, "unnecessary," she says...

I've had this reel since November 2015 and it has met my expectations. I paired it with my 9 foot medium heavy surf rod and it is well balanced. I've using this reel for the pre spawn and spawn of hybrid stripers and man this reel really winches them in. I've caught over 100 hybrids this year already with this reel and it has earned my respect. The drag settings maybe a little stiff at first but when you get it set properly then it will work just fine. If you are putting braid onto this reel I would recommend using mono backing before braid. Oh yeah I got the 5000 series reel. I've dunked this thing in the water so many times by accident and it functions flawlessly.

I was looking for a quality lighter reel for trout stream fishing. I rigged it up with 4 lb on a Fenwick 5’ 3” HMX rod. Absolutely awesome combo. I’d recommend this particular reel to anyone who wants a lighter durable setup. If anyone decided to go with the reel rod combo I mentioned it is extremely sensitive. The only downfall is if you’re fishing in creeks and streams that are a little more rocky it’s tough because sometimes you’ll get in spots where everything can feel like a bite. Hope this helps.

At this point many positive reviews have come acroos and we all get the idea that the guys that have them , for the most part love thembottom line weel built reel , very solid ,, tad heavy but super solid and very strong cast very nice with 30lb power pro slick .if the extra 50+ $$ (make you fell better ,, pull the trigger you wont be sorry , the battle ll an excellent chice and will stand up to just about anythingyou fish for .

I've owned one of these for over a year now and have been using it consistently.The reels action is very smooth and quiet, Paired with a Shimano Teramar rod and braided line, you can sense anything on the end of that line.The performance has been outstanding compared to other reels I've used in the past.I just ordered a second one for myself, and another for a family member.For this price, you can't go wrong.

Purchased the 5000 size. Overall I’m happy with the reel. The fit and finish is tight/clean. Drag is strong. Casts well. I’ve mostly been fishing bottom rigs on the surf w 2/3/4 oz weights on a 9’ heavy rod.My one complaint about the reel is that the handle can come loose by reeling backwards. In my opinion, there ought to be a screw that threads into the handle from the other side of the reel.

What more can I say about the Battle II series that hasn't already been said? They're great reels for the price and will stand up to the elements over time. I use my 8000 on my surf casting rod and it's been a champ over the course of a few months requiring zero maintenance so far. Just make sure you rinse your gear off after saltwater use and you'll be good to go!

Loved fishing with this Penn Battle II Reel. Was a bit bigger and heavier than I expected, but that was all my fault for not paying attention to the specs. Threw some 40 lb braid and fluorocarbon on it and cranked in every fish I could hook in the Florida Keys with ease, except for the ones that chomped through my fluoro leader. Performs like a beast...love it.

Spooled it with 6lb test and caught this baby on the 5th cast. This reel i sooo smooth. I got two other ultralight reels this week and returned them both - one was a Lew’s and the other was some Yinhai. Each had some flaw out of the box and was on the cheap side. The Penns are always smooth and durable. With fishing reels you really get what you pay for.

I bought this reel for my surf fishing setup and it has been fantastic. Havent had any issues with it so far. The reel feels and functions as a premium device but I managed to get mine on a sale so it did not have a premium price tag. I would highly recommend this reel for most saltwater surf/dock fishing! I will update months down the road.

Penn makes great stuff and this reel is a beast. The drag system is what sold me. Variable drag settings up to 25 pounds and it will really do 25 pounds. I use it to pull big bass out of heavy cover and it works every time. The only complaint is that it's a bit heavy and if I didn't tether it to the yak, it would be sleeping with the fishes.

Penn Battle II's are an excellent value. You can pay more $$$, lot more, and get exotic light(er) weight reels, but Battle II's work, they are a durable and if reasonably cared for will deliver years of service. Also, Penn makes a reel and rod spray that is primo for saltwater clean up. All the guides use it, eliminates corrosion.

Absolutely the best reel you can purchase for anyone who is looking to begin fishing as a hobby. The ordered arrived before the estimate arrival, in perfect condition,and with excellent packaging. Gorgeous reel when seen up close, it goes well with some 20lbs Spiderwire Stealth Braid. 10/10 would recommend, excellent job.

Saw this fishing reel on the Lightning Deal/Deal of the Day on Amazon; not knowing anything about fishing equipment myself, I showed it to my boyfriend, who promptly exclaimed, "Penn is a really good brand!" Needless to say, he is very pleased about getting such a fine quality fishing reel at such a great price!
