I decided to save some money by learning to replace brake and gear cables myself. The bike shops want a ton of money to do work like this because it is "complicated and takes special tools and skills." As it turns out, replacing cables is not rocket science. It's quick and simple if you have the right tools... primarily good socket wrenches (which you probably already own) and a good cable cutter. Why? Because a good cable cutter will make clean (no frayed ends) cuts that can be threaded through the cable path easily. You CANNOT use regular wire cutters to cut bike cables. The cables are too tough and they'll "flatten out" and fray, making them difficult to work with. Regular wire cutters MIGHT work, but it won't be much fun. There are many cable cutters available on Amazon, but some are obviously cheap junk and others (that come with blue grips) are simply too expensive for something that most weekend bike mechanics use only occasionally. After researching every cutter on Amazon, I decided that the Pedro cutter was the best choice of me. I'm glad I made that decision because it works perfectly and costs much less than the blue cutters. Every cut was just right and I finished my first cable job with zero problems. It is interesting to read some other users' comments. One person said the Pedro cutters do a terrible job and he could not get a clean cut. That is hard to believe and the great majority of positive comments say otherwise. Another more legitimate criticism is that the Pedro cutters don't have a crimper for the cable tips. That is true. I agree that it SHOULD have a crimper, since that would be a simple addition. However, this is not a deal-breaker because you can buy a decent electrical wire stripper/cable crimper at your local "dollar store" for a buck.To summarize... These are great cutters at a reasonable price. Unless you are a professional bike mechanic who requires the long-term durability of the more expensive Park or Shimano tools, the Pedro cutter will meet your needs, exceed your expectations and will probably last for the rest of your life.

This is a very slick and well-made unit. It cuts through inner cable or housing like it was butter.I'm an electrician and resisted buying a bicycle cable cutter as the tools I had on hand were doing an OK job. I had the occasional issue with some housings but nothing that a second cut usually didn't cure and maybe opening it back up with a scratch awl so I figured I didn't need to spend cash on a dedicated tool. But this tool does such a nice job that I had to buy it once I held one in my hands. This is a top-quality hand tool. The locking mechanism is a very slick design as is the return spring. It can be easily manipulated and used with one hand leaving the other hand free to hold the cable. The locking cam opens and closes effortlessly with one-hand operation and the spring is designed so that there is no way it can pinch your hand or catch your clothing. The blades are very sharp and don't chip or dull and cut well so there aren't many issues with cable housing coils collapsing. Even if it does get that slight twist sometimes the tool has a deep notch so that you can nip the curlie-cue off easily and get that nice flat & smooth terminal end to the housing that you want. The handle has a luxurious soft-but-durable yellow rubberized grip over a wide curved handle so it is comfortable to use and doesn't dig into your fingers or palm. This cutter has the high-end feel of an expensive electrical tool like those that Klein or Ideal makes.I'd recommend this tool to anyone who is getting into working on their own bicycles. It'll last you a lifetime if you take care of it and keep it dry and safe. This is a true 5-star tool. You really can't go wrong with Pedro's or Park tools. This happens to be the best cable tool I've seen.

Bought, or should I say practically stole these - the price was so low, it was ridiculous. Lower than most comparable budget versions of the same kind of tool on this site, even! I needed a decent cable cutter while doing a handlebar and brake lever conversion on my bicycle which required shortening the brake lines. It looks and feels like it should have a good service life in the hands of a hobbyist. This one does cut easily through cables and housing although it does flatten the cut end of the cable housing somewhat. Maybe I'm not doing something right as this was the first time I attempted work of this nature. However, after doing a number of practice cuts on a cable section that was going to be thrown away, got it worked out without too much fuss. I give this one 4 stars only because I couldn't get "professional results" right off the bat. I'm sure in the hands of someone who does know what they're doing, Pedro's Bicycle Cable Cutter would do well. Certainly works a ton better than the crude methods I tried that made me realize the wisdom in having the right tool for the job.

I've wanted to buy some cable cutters for a while. My dad's electrician tools weren't "cutting it." I found these affordable and dependable. They cut housing and wires easily and somewhat cleanly.Overall, quality and durability is good. Great for the price, keep in a dry, cool place, they tend to rust in moist environments. Lubricate the spring and other moving parts to elongate tool lifeThese cutters cut brake housings with a small bend, but that can be fixed with a file. For shift housings, it is somewhat clean but with a splitting cut. Again, it can be filed down. For wires however, the cut is very clean. Anyways, an end cap covers the cable to keep it from unraveling. The only thing I think Pedro's tools should include is a crimping tool integrated in the cutters. For the price, I think it would be worth shedding some metal to enable easy and professional crimps on your cable ends. That's why I only marked four stars. This is a solid, well built tool that belongs in your home or shop. I recommend this over the Park Tool model mostly for the price.

While this tool is a bit expensive, I will be using it several times a year to maintain my family's fleet of bicycles. The cost is quickly offset by the cost of having your local bike shop do the job for you. The bottom line is that if you expect to use this only once, it is too pricey. However, if you ride your bike regularly, you will need to replace your cables at least yearly. Index shifters' reliability is dependent on smooth running cables. When cable housings get worn or dirty, the shifting suffers. This Pedro's cutter excels at cutting cable housing without crushing it. Crushed housing is a real pain to deal with. I have now replaced the cables and housings in two different bikes and the Pedro's cutter has performed well. There is still a small amount of distortion of the housings but that is easily remedied with an awl to open up the inner Teflon sheath.

They all cut well...I've owned numerous cable cutters for a while now, been working on bicycles for 10 years in numerous shops.I prefer the SRAM or the Park Tool cable cutters to these Pedros cutters. For the money these PEDROS cutters aren't as nice, precise or durable. Not a huge fan of the rolled spring, but it seems more durable and better protected on the SRAM cutters than on these. I have seen these with the spring just destroyed. My current job supplies the SRAM and I bought these after my Park CN-10 got dull after years of service. Should have gotten the SRAM...I use it at work and prefer the feel of the handles, the wire retaining clip and hidden Awl for cable ends.

I didn't think I needed a pair of cable cutters when I set out to replace the derailleur cables on my bike. I figured I can just use a set of those pliers with the cutting edge built into the plier jaws.I was wrong. Those plier cutting edges suck big time for cutting bike cable. They were dull and mashed the cables flat, and couldn't cut through the tough steel strands. I ruined 2 sets of derailleur cables before I gave up and decided to order a pair of Pedro's cable cutters off Amazon.Received the Pedros cable cutters and it snipped through the bike cables like butter. I could have saved myself some grief if I had these cable cutters in the first place. Lesson learned!

This cable cutter slices through stainless brake and caliper cable like it's not even there and it cuts the steel wound cable sheath with ease. There is a bit of crimping when cutting the sheath, but I've never seen a cable cutter that didn't crush the sheath at least a small amount. Most people use an ice pick to bend the crushed sheath back into shape after cutting so it doesn't cause friction and premature cable wear. I prefer to use a small belt sander to clean up the ends of the cut sheath. This is a solid and well built cable cutter and it looks like it will last a lifetime with proper care. Keep it clean and oiled and don't allow it to rust!

[grammatical edits] I’ve done three sprint triathlons, and was overdue to replace my own shifter cables. Selected these cutters because They were on Zinn’s list, and fit the budget better than the ones I initially planned to buy. A buddy of mine who’s done an Ironman also said good things about them. I’m glad I bought these. Did a great job, look to be well made, great fit and finish (and I’m a bit picky about such things), and am confident they’ll last longer than my body will let me ride. I do wish the cutter had a dedicated notch for crimping wire caps, but frankly I found it to be a non-issue for me in actual use. Recommend? Yes, absolutely.

I had been using diagonal cutters to cut brake and shifter cables and housings, which do not work very well for that purpose. Pedro's cable cutters are a vast improvement over diagonal cutters for this application, making a very clean cut with almost no effort. I researched what cable cutters other people recommended, and Felco cutters came highly recommended. These Pedro's cutters appear to be identical to Felco cable cutters, so I assume that Pedro's OEMs their cable cutters from Felco. That seems to be a good thing, because the price of Pedro's cable cutters is half of what I could find for the identically-appearing Felco cable cutters.

First time to buy a cable cutter but I'm in the process of upgrading several bikes so I needed this; nothing I own would make a dent in the Jagwire cabling I ordered. This is a heavy, quality feeling tool which does a great job on cable and housing. When cutting housing, I guess it's the luck of the draw, but sometimes a section of the coiled metal case will be pushed across the opening and will have to be moved by an awl. This doesn't happen all the time and it's not such a big deal. If I hadn't wanted to fool with it, I could have recut it and tried again. This or something like this is an indispensable tool and I'm happy I bought it.

This is a beautiful cable cutter. When I worked in a shop, we mostly used Park. But my last bike tool purchase was Pedro's pedal wrench, which is solid, so I decided to try this. The Pedro's cutter feels more solid in my hand than the Park. I love the spring, and the locking mechanism is less likely to become unhooked in a cluttered toolbox than Park's handle loop.It slices through heavy cable housing evenly, and without flatting. All this tool is missing is a ferrule crimper, but pliers will do the job. I'll watch to see how the cutting head holds up. But I'm very satisfied with Pedro's Bicycle Cable Cutter so far.

This has got to be one of the best performing tools I've ever bought! My past attempts at cutting derailleur cables with the tools on hand produced what charitably could be called 'less than perfect' results. This tool cut the heavier brake cables so easily and cleanly it was amazing. I don't know who Pedro is but from now on I'll look for his tools and products first. I love it when a product works even better than my best-case expectations. This one does.

It is good cutter:- feels right in hands, has a good grip, has solid feel yet not heavy- It cuts bike cables well: clean and even- the lock is excellentThere are a couple of things to notice that I subtract 1 star for:- you still need a separate pliers to squeeze the cap on - the cutter does not have any part that can be used as pliers- once you cut the cable housing you need to open it a little - again you would need another tool

These seem to be well made and to do what they are designed for, cutting cables and cable housing. Unfortunately I discovered that they often collapse the housing in the course of cutting it, though sometimes they did not. It was not very difficult to reopen the housing with a pointed probe. Maybe I just need more experience with them. Honesty compels me to rate these four stars instead of five for this reason.
