The last time we were on holiday my wife and I were constantly saying that we wished we had a pair of binoculars with us. I have several large pairs at home, but these are way to bulky to carry around whilst exploring or travelling around on holiday. So this year I decided to invest in a good pair of compact binoculars to take away with us. After a lot of research I decided to buy a pair of Nikon Aculon A30 binoculars - I am so glad that I did!We have just come back from a lovely holiday with fantastic views everywhere and the binoculars have been absolutely brilliant! First of all, they are very small and compact, in their folded position they are approximately 12cm (5") long, 7cm (3")wide and 5cm (2") deep, small enough to fit in a pocket, handbag or glove compartment. They feel like a real quality product and are reassuringly heavy. They are made of alloy and each side is rubber coated giving them a good secure grip. The action of folding and unfolding them also feels very reassuring as everything is well made and precise. When you unfold them, there is just the right amount of resistance and again a real feel of quality! The focus wheel in the middle is also very sturdy and precise as is the diopter adjustment. Focusing is very easy, use the centre wheel to focus the view in your left eye, then focus the view for your right eye with the diopter adjustment on the right hand lens.I am very pleased with the image they produce, it is crisp, clear and bright. I have had other compact binoculars before, some cheap and some reasonably expensive and the A30 image is considerably better. Eye relief is pretty good too. I wear glasses and if I fold the cups down I can use these binoculars easily with my glasses on. This is not practical though if several people are using them and some do not wear glasses, as folding the cups back is a little fiddly - I just push my glasses up and use them without. Another problem with small binoculars is field of view and shaky images. I found the A30 surprisingly good on both counts. The field of view is fine and I have no issues with shaking as these binoculars feel very sturdy in the hand. The optics are good in low light conditions and all in all I was very impressed with the way the binoculars performed.A neck strap allows you to wear them around your neck and has plenty of adjustment. They also come with a cloth case which gives them some protection. The case has no strap, but it fits around the strap on the binoculars for carrying them around. The eye pieces come with protective caps, but I soon got fed up of using these, so they ended up in a drawer. As you have probably gathered, I love these binoculars. They are extremely well made, ultra portable and give a very clear image. If you are looking for a pair of compact binoculars, these are great value for money. They certainly put a smile on my face! Bought these for a child for bird watching but would be excellent for anyone who needs a small, lightweight but sharp and clear pair of binoculars. I was very impressed.
