I’m a bit of an optical freak – I love binoculars and telescopes and own a few sets. My best ever is a pair of Canon Image Stabilised 18x50 that I bought in October 2003. 16 years later they’re still going strong and I’ve never had a fault with them. However, they have three disadvantages:1. They’re big. You can’t slip these in your pocket. You need a bag to carry them in or a substantial strap system.2. They’re heavy. They weigh over a kilogram and they’re difficult to hold up for a long time. Monopods are good as are harness systems that support the weight. I use a small video monopod thing that fits onto a neck strap.3. They have a narrow field of view. One of the issues with high magnification is the field of view.So for everyday use I have set of small 8x pocket binoculars which I wanted to upgrade and I looked at the Canon options. One thing I’ve certainly learned from experience is that 8 or 10 times magnification is more than sufficient and I picked the Canon 8x20 because they were also the cheapest option. They’re certainly bigger than their pocket sized predecessor and wouldn’t fit into a standard pocket but they’re light and crystal clear. Canon optics are second to none and I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. The quality of the build is good and they feel substantial. Ergonomically the focus wheel and IS button are in just the right place and you can operate both at the same time with no difficulty. Personally I dispensed with the neck strap because I prefer a wrist strap (Op/Tech do a variety of sizes and colours with quick release systems on Amazon. Other brands are available but they’re my favourite!).I noted a complaint on some reviews that the batteries only give you 6 hours of use, but do the sums. When you decide to use the stabiliser it’s probably only for a maximum of 30 seconds at a time. The binoculars are able to be used quite well without the stabiliser until you focus on what you’ve been looking for, then you press the button. You don’t switch it on as you sweep around looking for something. That means you can use the binoculars over 700 times before the battery runs out. I don’t have a problem with that.Overall these are great and I look forward to years of use.

I agree in all respects with 'Engineer', but would like to add a few remarks:Firstly: I wondered how stabilized bins would deal with following fast motion, whether birds or F1 cars. No-one seems to address this point; so I'll do it now.The answer is, at least in the case of this product, very well.If one keeps one's finger on the stabilizer button and pans the bins, the image lags slightly, by, presumably, the maximum possible correction angle. This is very smoothly done, and is not in any way a nuisance.Secondly: these are exceptionally light and petite, considering they have the stabilizing mechanism built-in. Of course they are larger than 8x25 binoculars without this, but easily fit into my jacket pocket. Finally: There's little point in owning optics, however high their quality, if they're so cumbersome and/or heavy that they're still in the drawer.Strongly recommended.

The image stabilization on these binoculars is easy to use and works very well, making it far easier to view the image. Even on board a ferry, it was easy to view sailing boats in the distance. Being my first pair of binoculars, I am not able to compare the quality of the lenses to other binoculars. My impression is that the image is good. The only downside that I noticed about the image quality was that there is some slight green fringing that can be seen sometimes (but it is only slight and I don't know if this is a common problem with binocular lenses), and the image is not as sharp as say an image from a digital camera picture. The binoculars are light enough to carry without difficulty.

This entry level product into the world of image stabilised (IS) binoculars is very good value for money. Used on a rocking boat can allo you to focus on distant objects far more easily and enable letters and numbers to be read that would otherwise not be possible. Although the stabilisation range is limited, they still work far beter than with no help at all. Just keep them dry as they are not designed to be waterproof.

Having now had these binoculars for 16 months and used constantly I feel I can now admit they are the best purchase I have made. I was initially concerned about battery life, but this has turned out to be unfounded. The view both with and without the stabiliser is unbelievably clear, but of course the stabiliser makes it seem like a photograph. A great purchase.

Bought these for my wife. They perform superbly. Focus in on a subject, press the stabilise button and it's just like an invisible tripod has grown under your hands. Even without the stabiliser these are good and light binoculars, with the stabiliser they deserve 5 stars.

Excellent lightweight stabilising binoculars. You lose some power compared with the heavier, more powerful version which I use but it's a huge advantage for my wife. Ideal for taking on long walks.
