After trying to buy the Fujinon 14x40's as I was wary of the reports I have read that these can seem 'soft' with stabilisation on, I found the company (on Amazon) were running some sort of bait price they had no intention of honouring. Amazon still have not replied back to me about them, and they keep reappearing every few days with a different name - really worrying! However these were a fair price and arrived in one day, as I had to pay extra for as time was getting short before a holiday by then.I can immediately see why people say:" once you have used image stabilised bins you won't want to use anything else."Testing them in the garden it was possible to identify the airline by the tails of aircraft at 35,000 ft.Birds in the garden stood out beautifully and with high contrast/strong colour. When I took them on holiday to a place (Dingli Cliffs, Malta) where the sky is dark enough to see the Milky Way I was able for the first time to identify a number of Messier objects, at 60 my night vision isn't great anymore so the exit pupil on these is probably letting in as much as I can manage, mag -8 objects were certainly visible as was Saturn even though it is at the far side of the sun currently.Really I'm very pleased with these, I did fit a couple of 58mm UV filters to the front elements to protect them.PLUS POINTSThey gather as much light as I can use.15x magnification with image stabilisation is a great combo at 40mm lenses (18x would lose too much light at night for me)No sign of the dreaded 'shimmer' some people complain of (maybe it depends what sort of shakes your hands have got?)Tripod socket made it very easy to use an easy to carry monopod for extended viewing as they start to get heavy for extended use, in Astronomy for example.Contrast and resolution are very good.MINUS POINTS - these are more a case of at this price, and from a manufacturer like Canon, I expect better. There is a surprising amount of Chromatic Aberration, which seems to be evenly across the field I.e. no worst at the edges than the centre. To be honest it is probably only noticeable because the image stabilisation makes the image so clear and it takes a very contrasty object like a pure white car at a distance to see it, it really does not detract at all in normal use, but on bins of this price?I wear glasses, but I tried the eyecups extended without glasses and the rubber is literally painfully hard and lets an awful lot of light around them. I would not be be happy to use them without glasses. With the eyecups folded back they are fine with glasses and the covers fit well folded.I would be annoyed if a £100 camera lens came without a lens cap, but that Canon cannot supply a pair of standard 58mm lens caps for the front optics on a pair of bins at is price is just appalling. Finally the case is way too soft to protect these and doesn't even have a strap, so when you take the bins out you have to drop the case somewhere to use them.

I bought these for bird watching, star gazing and for hiking. The magnification is comfortable enough even when looking at close subjects and the focus is nice and smooth to change. The image stabiliser button will toggle the IS on or off and you can tell which state it is in by looking at an LED beside the button which is handy. It will also switch off to save power after I think 5mins or so.These are pretty heavy binoculars and they are certainly large enough that you wouldn't really take them out with you on a hike for example unless you really thought you were going to want to use them. They feel very comfortable to hold and feels very solid. As other users have said, the eye cups are quite hard and to get a comfortable eye relief you either have to push them in a few mm which hurts slightly or roll the eye cups back and hold them slightly away from your eyes which is annoying. I have found a way to make it more comfortable but it's still slightly annoying. The rear caps are complete junk and come off all the time in the bag (I am considering just not using them) and there were no front caps which is just bizarre for such an expensive piece of equipment (even the cheapest Canon lenses come with decent caps). In saying that, I am using two 58mm caps from canon lenses that do the job really nicely and keep the front protected. The bag is alright but it only has a small badly stuck on felt material disk to stop the back of the clip (on the inside of the case) from scratching the binoculars. There is no belt loop or neck strap for the bag so you would have to use the thin binocular strap which wouldn't be too nice for carrying around. I just put the case in my bag until I need to use it.Not the quickest method of being able to use the binoculars for bird watching etc.. but there isn't really another way with the case as is.It does the job but it's just not great. With the image stabilisation off the optics are really sharp and really brings out the life and depth of whatever you are looking at. With IS on, it is just incredible, you can pick out so much detail without shake and looking at the moon handheld with depth was just incredible. When IS is on, the is a slight softness that is noticeable during usage, especially if panning but the overall effect of the stabilisation far outweighs the small loss in sharpness and chromatic aberration that become visible.Overall I am really happy with these binoculars but I do feel they are quite expensive value wise.

Last year I purchased two pairs of binoculars both of which I would describe as superb. One was a Helios Quantum 4 15X70 and the other a Strathspey waterproof 10X50. The Helios are utterly amazing with the 70mm objective lens giving a great 4.5 field of view. The Stratspey's have terrific lenses and I find them so handy for carrying around in general use. However because of their weight the Helios bins must be tripod mounted which is not as easy as it sounds. Anyone who has done this will know that when trying to look at the night sky above say 60 degrees from the horizontal you need a tripod of about 8 feet high. You just cannot get under them to see high in the sky objects. So I decided to lash out and buy a pair of Canon image stabilised binoculars. After reading many opinions and reviews I came to the conclusion that as astronomy will be their main use I would be best served with a pair of 15X50's. What a surprise I had in store when I first looked through them. The moon was just over first quarter and after using them without the stabilisation which was great anyway I turned on the stabiliser button and after one second the night sky stood still! I am 80 years of age and my hands are far from steady but these bins took me back to the days when I had rock steady hands. Yes they are fairly heavy at just over a kilogram but with the neck strap fitted (very necessary) and sitting in a small patio chair I could gaze at the visible universe for as long as I wished.I have to say that if it is possible to set up my Helios 15X70's on a tripod to look at a given part of the sky the view is even more fantastic. However with all the trouble to assemble them and a large amount of the night sky unavailable because of the limitations I have mentioned the Canons come into their own with no trouble at all. A press of the button and the stabilisation lasts for 5 minutes or if you wish you can turn them off with a further press. These binoculars are truly sensational and if you can raise the money (search the internet for the lowest price) you will I am sure not have wasted your money.

Utterly love my new binoculars! They have superb optics giving a lovely clear bright image even before the image stabilisation is engaged. When the image stabilising button is pressed, the trembling view immediately settles enabling you to perceive much more detail. As with most binoculars, eyepieces can be adjusted for those with eyes with differing dioptres and the distance between the eyepieces is also easily adjusted. They are supplied with a soft case and lens caps for the eyepieces, but not for the objective lenses. The view of objects in the night sky is much improved - very easy to see the moons of Jupiter. I WAS looking at getting the 12x36 Canon IS binoculars, but the price of them shot up and this pair became eligible on the Canon cashback offer. (£170 cashback available until 15 May 2018 - ONLY if bought from particular Canon approved sellers!) Coupled with the improved aperture and the fact that these are more weatherproof, I'm not sorry that I decided to spend a little more. They are as some have said, a bit heavy, but they compare well with the traditional binoculars that I was replacing and the improved performance makes up for the extra arm strain.

I have owned a pair these Canon 15x50 IS Binoculars for 15 years now. They are incredible binoculars. I work at sea and these binoculars improve safety on passage immeasurably. Whilst these days watch keeping at sea tends to be all about Radar, ARPA & AIS, your decisions are more often than not, based on what you can see. Using these binoculars, I can see further and so decide what is happening earlier, thereby giving me more time to react and avoid situations before they develop. For example, at night using standard 7 x 50 binoculars, I can identify other vessels lights from about 4-5 miles away. With the Canon 15 x 50 IS, I can identify the same lights from 8 miles.Which gives me much more time to decide if the risk of collision exists and take appropriate action at an earlier opportunity.

The 15X50 bins arrived safely packed inside the carry case. However, a small piece of plastic had snapped off from the lock on the case so that it couldn't be opened. The whole package had to be returned. I used Royal Mail and the package arrived back at Middleton Banks within 24hrs. The replacement which was sent back to me took a fortnight to arrive. Ugh! I could have walked there and back in half the time! The bins have excellent optics and are used for astronomy; this means I can now handhold without the stars dancing around. Worth the money at £760.

I purchased these because I've always wanted to try my hand at a spot of bird watching they were on offer so thought I'd snatch them up for a good price although I need to do some homework first up before I get to try them out in the field but at the end of the day if I am just lucky enough to spot a tit or two I'll be a happy man. They appear to be light weight so hopefully not too much strain on the old writs and with the image stabiliser it should eliminate any shake at that critical moment.

If Darth Vader owned a pair of binoculars it would probably be these. Bright, pin sharp optics and in common with all hand held binoculars of this magnification, difficult to hold the image steady - until you "press the button". It transforms a shaky image into that of tripod mounted optics. Much as I like them I've rated these binoculars 4 stars because the rubber eyepieces are uncomfortable and the price is too high. A little effort by Canon to address both of these issues would guarantee 5*.

I've owned and used these for nearly two and a half years to date and really can't find any fault. The are robust, rugged and weatherproof and give superb image quality. The image stabilising is worth its weight, removing virtually all jitter from the view.Like other reviewers, I also use these at night for star gazing and find them remarkable easy to hold for lengthy periods. Their low light ability is also very good. You pay for good image quality and these binoculars won't let you down.

I am no technician, being an ex Sailor and used to smaller lighter models, but these are great mounted on a a tripod on my balcony in Golfe Juan. I can pick out vessels names passing on the horizon. What I see laid on the decks of passing Yachts is not for discussion, especially when getting the shakes its instantly fixed by pressing the button on top, but keep the batteries in good condition and do not forget to remove them if you store for any length of time.

19.9.2015

If you need a pair of the best binocular's and can afford them I personally have not seen better. The magnification is high the clarity is superb. The icing on the cake though is the image stabilization. If you have never experienced this feature it is the WOW factor and needs to be seen to be believed. You can also use these binoculars in wet conditions. They are a bit heavy at 1.2 kilos and the supplied case is not up to the same standard but suffices.

I was a bit weary ordering this from Amazon Warehouse because it stated that there maybe some cosmetic damage to the case or accessories. I needn't have worried. The product arrived on time and as new. The bonus was the discount I had off the normal price of these binocs (which is a bit steep to say the least.)The binoculars themselves are sensational. I've bought them for stargazing, but they are fab for normal day to day use. Highly recommended.

These stablised 15x magnification binoculars are great for long-distance bird watching or star gazing and represent a significant improvement over non-stablised binoculars. They can also be tripod mounted for hands-free operation and the object lenses are threaded to accept filters and lens hoods.I am delighted with these binoculars and recommend them to anyone seeking the maximum performance from a single pair of binoculars.

12.3.2010

I bought these for my husband to view ships passing up the Channel on the distant horizon. They are amazing. Ships that are just a blur to the naked eye become clear enough to read their names. The stabilisation works perfectly. I am sure they will be good when out birdwatching as they are quite lightweight for their size. The field of vision is good, enabling the object to be quickly picked out. Thouroughly recommended.

These are the second pair of canon IS binoculars I've purchased, the others being 10x30, these ones are an order of magnitude larger, they have such crisp optics and the stabilization is rock solid. I'd recommend a pair of good quality multi coated filters for the front (58mm screw in) and to take the strain off your back a harness. I'd not hesitate to buy again
