This is a beautiful toy and would make a lovely present for a pre school age child, it is quite wide at 45 wish cm, which means that that the shapes aren't miniatures, they are good size for toddlers and don't have the risk of swallowing. The colours are lovely and bright and a picture of the shape is printed at the base of each peg, along with the name of the shape, which provides help for children when just starting out with shapes. There are plenty of learning opportunities with this product; shape, colour, number, which makes it good value for money.I have been disappointed with the quality and finish of some of the Melissa & Doug products I have bought recently as the finish has been very poor, with splintered edges, chipped paint etc. However this toy has no such problems, the finish is excellent and I am very pleased with my purchase!

Can't fault this. We had Melissa and Drug's smaller shape stacker and DD loved it, findibg new ways to play with it for a full.yr between 1 and 2. Bought her this to stretch her a bit as she turned 2 and she lovesick just as much. The quality is exactly what you'd expect from this brand: solidly built, beautifully painted/printed/coloured and every edge smoothed. With the number of things this can help us teach our little one, including number values, and names, shape and colour recognition, sorting, less/more etc, it's one of the best educational toys we've encountered. And not a speaker or flashing light in sight ?Top notch.

Rainbow caterpillar is just what I required for my grandson of 12 months. He is fascinated by wheels, clocks and things which move. The plastic cogs are brightly coloured and each interlock so they will move , which ever one that is moved activates the whole line of cogs. Each cog fits on to an matching peg and so helps to develop matching and order skills. The whole caterpillar promotes a number of developmental activities, suggestions are given on the back of the box. All fixed onto a wooden board the caterpillar makes a bright, stimulating , educational learning toy.

Bought this for my 18 month old daughter and she loves it. It's a fantastic educational toy that can be used in many ways.We use it for- matching colours, she was unable to do this to start with but quickly learned- improving fine motor skills by fitting the cogs in- counting, she counts as she puts them onIt is also very good quality. A wooden board with plastic cogs which is all aesthetically pleasing too. My little one has thrown it about everywhere but it is still in perfect condition.

My 1 year old was instantly interested in this toy and spent several minutes twirling the cogs. It looks nice, is colourful and durable. The cogs match the coloured pegs they sit on which will be useful for colour matching later on. Although my 1 year old can't manage to place the cogs on the pegs at the moment, learning to do this will help develop her fine motor control. This is a really nice toy and I will probably buy it again as a gift for a 1 year old.

Was looking for a solid and colorful numbers toy for my 2 and a half year old who is starting to speak and count. The minute she saw this she wouldn't let go of it. As well as trying to stack the blocks in number order back onto the caterpillar she likes to stack them into a tower. It's really colourful so should be a good tool for learning colours too. Very reasonably priced and I expect it to last a long time.

My 22 month old daughter loves this toy. She likes matching the colours, placing them in the correct place and turning them around. Very good to teach colour matching and for eye and held coordination. She holds each one up so I can name the colour before matching it to the corresponding peg, she attempts to say the colours too, so will definitely help in her language development too.

Brought this for toddlers ranging from 18 months to nearly 2.5 years. They all love it and has been played with every day, sorting into colours or just turning the cogs. One of them even used their imagination slivering it round the table chomping up its own cogs! I would happily buy this again as a first birthday gift as its perfect for a simple early learning and exploring toy.

This is awesome. Our daughter loves it. It's one of those toys that children play with differently as they get older. At the moment, she just likes the fact if she lifts it up, stuff goes everywhere. Later, she'll get in to turning one of them to see them spin, then later putting them on the pegs, then later putting them on the right colours. It's still one of her go-to toys.

Wonderful toy. Have bought this for friends children so decided to get one for my sons first birthday. Brilliant. Teaching him how gears work. Good for learning colours. And if he gets bored he can chew on the gears too! Very durable. Bought for a friend 5 years ago and it is still in excellent condition after going through two of her children. Would highly recommend.

Bought for my 1.5 year old son as a Christmas gift. I initially bought it as he loves anything mechanical and things that turn and spin. I found out that it also became really useful as a teaching aid for learning colours. Under each cog is a peg that is colour coded so you can match them up. The toy is mostly made from wood, well made and feels durable.

I love this, it's durable and great value, my 16 month old can colour match all the pegs with no troubles. However if the cogs has been made different sizes it would mean that there was only one correct way to make the toy work then this would increase it's learning scope to the maximum.A small change that would be worth looking into. Great toy still

This toy looks great and feels very high quality. My sister prefers her children to have wooden toys, hence why I chose this toy. The fact that it's educational too is a plus! It feels very sturdy and comes packaged nicely. Highly recommended. My nephew is 2 1/2, and loves stacking up the bits and tearing the towers back down again. Recommended!

Usual high quality materials used to create the caterpillar. Lovely bright colours means the caterpillar has never been relegated to the toy box but sits out on a shelf to be talked about each day. Colour and number recognition has been greatly aided and my little one likes to hear me sing I can sing a rainbow every time we see the caterpillar!

The children have all explored this toy from the ones who know numbers and can put them in order to those who have just had fun spotting their special number and can fit them all on any order they like. Fitted in to our caterpillar/ butterfly theme and has been safe to leave out even with a curious under 1 year old crawling around.
