Our cats get to go outside, but we call them in at night. Twice in the last year one cat has disappeared for about a month, then just shows up again, fat and happy, obviously well-fed and healthy. The first time he disappeared I walked into the woods searching and hoping to at least find some trace of him. I found nothing. I kept thinking there had to be a way to track him. This last time he disappeared and came back, I did a lot of searching on the internet and found this device.I put it on his collar last yesterday, then let him out today. I just tracked him to a neighbor's house about 1/4 mile away. At first, walking around places I know he likes, I got no signal, but as I walked up the street,I suddenly heard a beep, saw a single red light, then, with every step, the lights lit up and I could hear the tag chirping, as I turned away from the chirping, the lights went back to yellow, and as I turned towards the chirping tag, the lights went to green and all the way to the top of the receiver unit. I knew I'd found either the cat, or at least his collar. I saw the neighbor and asked if I could look around her yard for my cat. She said they had been feeding him and loved having him around, he's such a sweet cat (yeah - I know!) Anyway, I was on the street and the cat was behind the house, under a covered patio - there was a distance of at least 30 feet and the entire house between the tag and the receiver and the signal was plenty strong. I scooped the cat up and brought him home (walking a quarter mile with a feisty Bengal is comical, in hindsight, though not at the time...)So here's my review of this device:It works wonderfully for me. I did have to walk around and wait to find a signal, but it was very, very easy to follow the signal and find the tag. Since most of our neighborhood is at least half-acre lots, I was really impressed by how easy it was to find the signal, and how strong the signal was over the distance.I originally ordered the Loc8tor Pet, which looks like the same product as this, but comes with the silicon sleeve to attach the tag to the collar and keep it our of the water dish. I needed expedited shipping (the cat is going crazy trapped in the house) so I sent an email to the company who sold the Loc8tor Pet (not Amazon) asking if I could change my shipping speed. They canceled my order with the reason "not in stock" (thanks a whole lot, you jerks!) There was no other way to get expedited shipping from another vendor (arrrrghh!), so I ordered this and got it in 2 days (order fulfilled by Amazon - awesome service) Anyway, the bottom line is that I have no way to keep the tag from dangling, so I had to cut a finger from a rubber glove, slip the tag inside the finger, attach the tag to the collar with a zip tie, and tape it to the collar with electrical tape. Not very elegant, but it will have to do until the covers made for the tag show up (had to get those from that e-auction site so I could get them without having to wait 3-5 weeks for shipping) I have read a LOT of reviews on this device and read over and over again the tags quit working when the cat dangles them in the water dish. Plus it seems like one more thing to catch and pull the collar off the cat, thus defeating the purpose of the device. That brings me to my only criticism of the device. I wish the tag had a hole on each end so I could run a zip-tie through and attach it horizontally to the collar so it doesn't dangle.I also wonder how easy it will be to determine if the batteries are low. I bought replacement batteries from a vendor on Amazon and they were really inexpensive compared to buying at the store. So I give this product a big thumbs up.Note about collars: I bought a collar and tag at a pet store a while back and he lost it in one day (there goes ten bucks), the breakaway clasp is just too weak. The new collar he has is made by SimplyCat - I got it at the big W store, the only place I could find a breakaway collar that didn't feel like a spider could open the clasp - plus it was only 3 bucks. We'll see how long it lasts, but at least I know I can track the collar with the Loc8tor.

My cat had been hit by a car and dragged himself into a crawlspace underneath an abandoned, foreclosed house, down the block in my neighborhood. He was hemorrhaging from internal injuries and unable to answer my calls with a meow, as he normally does. I believe he hid himself under the house in the expectation that he was going to die. This was the first time I had tried to find him using the Locator Lite. It was raining, as it has almost every single day this last April(broke the all-time record for rainiest April, even in Seattle), so I had to put a baggie around the locator unit to keep the water off. After searching his favorite areas without success, I was about to go in,as the rain was coming down even harder. On a whim, I walked up to the busy street bordering my house to the west, an area where my cat normally doesn't go, and suddenly I recieved a signal, albeit weak, but a definite signal nonetheless. I starting rotating in the spot where I was standing, to get a direction, and then began following it. It pointed me diagonally north, to a location that was 2 houses north and across the street, again, an area where I didn't think my cat ever went, I thought maybe it was a false reading. I followed the signal until I was standing in front of the now abandoned house, calling his name, still no answer. At this point my "NEIGHBOR FROM HELL" came out and announced that my cat had been hit by a car, and promptly LEFT without trying to help me in any way.I realized he must be dying underneath the house, the crawlspace was completely boarded up. I ran around desperately searching for a way to gain access. I found one in the back underneath the stairs and ran home to grab a flashlight. I shimied into the dank darkness, inside it was pitch black, even with a flashlight I could hardly see anything. Then a few feet in, out of my reach, I saw the flashing red light on his tag, as he lay motionless on the ground. Carefully and gently, I was able to get him out. He was still breathing, and attempeted a weak meow.I jumped into my car which I had by brought to front of the house and sped to the after-hours emergency vet in my area (Five Corners VCA Hospital) which happens to have vets specially trained in veterinary trauma medicine. They gave him an 80% chance of surviving the night. Thankfully, my kitty made it, and will be enjoying his 8 remaining lives. I'm planning on building an outdoor cat enclosure, so this will never happen again and my Locator Light tags will be given a new homes (such as my cell phone and keys). The negative commentary on the product made my wonder if I should keep it, as I live in a wet (Seattle) hilly area with a lot of obstructions. According to scaled maps I've looked at, my kitty was around 150 feet away when I picked up his collar signal. Maybe a few people received duds, or they didn't know how to use the product (I practiced using it in my living room before sending my cat out), and it worked when I NEEDED it.Without it, I would very certainly have lost my cherished pet(who is now expected to make a full recovery)and not even had closure, as I would never even have known what happened to him.

In the box you get the Loc8tor receiver, two transmitter tags, two loops for attaching the tags to keyrings, and a few pieces of sticky plastic for sticking the tags to things and for attaching the receiver unit to something when not in use.The receiver is a hand-held device a bit bigger and thicker than a credit card that has volume and power buttons on the side and four tag buttons on the front. There is also a small power light and a series of signal strength lights on the front. The tags are each about the size of a Murray Mint and both they and the receiver come with batteries pre-installed.To use the Loc8tor Lite you simply turn it on (using the power button, obviously),place one of the tags in close proximity to it then hold down one of the four buttons on the front of the receiver to pair the tag with that particular button. When you want to find that particular tag you simply press the button you paired it to and the receiver will `bleep' and the signal strength lights will light up when it has located the tag. The `bleeping' will become faster and more lights will light up as you point the front of the receiver in the direction of the tag and move towards it, conversely the sound will slow and the lights will go out as you move the front of the receiver away from the tag.The whole thing reminds me of those homing beacon things you used to see in 80's action shows, although I don't think they actually worked for real. The Loc8tor Lite is one of those strange gadgets that will either work brilliantly, or not at all, and I'm very pleased to say that it seems to work very well indeed. Unlike most of the other reviewers I didn't buy a Loc8tor Lite to find my cat, as I don't have one. I bought the Loc8tor for my dad who loses his keys on almost a daily basis, and even when said keys are still in the car 30 yards away the Loc8tor Lite finds them without any problem. The only negative points I can see with the Loc8tor Lite are that you only get two tags with it and said tags, although rubberised, could be damaged on a keyring if you're not careful. Also, you would have to take care to make sure the tags' batteries never run down as it would be very frustrating to find out that they had run out just when you needed them. Both points to note, but neither would stop me from recommending the Loc8tor Lite to anybody who might be prone to losing their keys, cats or other precious items.

I bought one of these some time ago as a solution to the regular panic sessions I used to have over losing my wallet (with credit cards, driving license etc., etc.), car keys, phone and so on. I should say right away that by and large it's been a great success and has saved me many frantic searches. The great thing is that after activating a search, it quickly starts beeping to reassure you that the lost item is somewhere nearby, and not (as I always imagine) left at the supermarket, dropped down a drain, stolen or whatever! Finding the object (provided it's static) is then just a game of warmer, colder until it comes to light. With two extra tags at £25 the pair it's quite an expensive item, and I was worried it would be like several similar, but cheaper devices I've bought over the years, i.e. work for a few months before falling to bits, or simply dying. Happily though, the tags have survived some fairly rough treatment - attached to my keys and so on - since I first got it in March 2012, and they're all still working, as is the locator itself - full marks as far as it goes!My main criticism is that there's no easy way of knowing when the batteries in the tags are flat - they simply stop working (or worse become erratic). The only way is to test them regularly by activating each one in turn with the locator, which I try to do once a week or so. Also replacing them when they are flat is quite a fiddly job. The tags have to be removed from whatever object they are attached to, and then the two halves prized apart (like opening an iPod) with a blunt knife, spudger or some such instrument. There's no way I could open them with my thumbnail as suggested in the manual! The two button cells should then be replaced with silver oxide SR54s, not the cheap alkaline LR54s that they come with - these only last a week or two. The silver oxide cells should last up to a year with normal use.So 4 out of 5 - but could do better!Update June 2017I notice that the tags have been redesigned since I wrote the above review, and now use a single lithium cell instead of two silver oxide button cells in the original tags. The lithium cells are certainly more readily available than the SR54s and hopefully should last longer and be easier to change

I love this thing! It's great peace of mind. After putting it on my cat's collar I tied it up tight against the collar so it doesn't dangle. That keeps it out of the water bowl. I've had no problems with the batteries going out either. Three weeks and counting on the original batteries. The locator works well within a hundred fifty feet or so. You do need to walk around a bit and rotate yourself to point it in various directions. No big deal. Just walk back and forth for a bit and double check the direction. You may even have to walk down the street. But done correctly you can locate your cat. It even located him underground in the culvert that runs under my driveway. I certainly didn't expect that.Once, when I wasn't getting a signal at all, I got into the car, rolled down all the windows, and drove slowly down the street while rotating the locator. I was almost ready to give up when I got a weak signal - one light. After parking the car I walked around and, following the tracker, finally wound up at a vacant house. The signal was very strong but no cat! I looked all in the bushes. Finally, I looked up and there he was, on the roof looking down at me. (The beeping that the collar unit makes is very high pitched and is sometimes difficult to pinpoint exactly.)Now that I know most of my cat's hiding places and the range of his territory I can make a good guess where he is just from the general direction the tracker points me in. I've met a couple of new people too. Acquaintances of my cat who I never knew about. Also, like others have noted, once he hears the beeping, he knows I'm looking for him with a treat. He's starting to come out and meet me.This device has enabled me to keep him closer to home. So far I've been able to have him inside well before dark. Hopefully there won't be any more sleepless nights waiting for him to come home.It was well worth the price for me. I'd recommend it to anyone who is thinking about getting one. I'm very glad I didn't let the negative reviews stop me from purchasing it.

Everything about this product can only be positive in my view. It is easy to set up, the instructions are very good and it works perfectly on my 4 year old cat. I live in the countryside in France and a few weeks ago my cat was deliberately shot with a small shot gun by bored teenagers. Luckily he was able to make his way home, but it would have been a different outcome if he had been injured and unable to do that, and would probably have died if we couldn't find him in the hedgerows or maize fields that surround our house. He survived and is fully recovered but I was not prepared to let him outdoors again without some device to track his whereabouts for all sorts of reasons. He doesn't wander far,but the countryside can be dangerous for a cat. So we found Loc8tor for sale on Amazon, with very good reviews. My cat has been wearing it for just 4 days and already it has proved to be invaluable. The cat transmitter is small, light and does not bother our cat at all - and he isn't a very large cat. The receiver is also small, compact and very easy to use, smaller and flatter than an iPod . My one outstanding example was today. The hunting season started, the hunters with horns and dogs were out this morning just by our house, Sacha was nowhere to be found in the house. So where was he? Startled by dogs and on the run?, caught by a hunting dog? The Loc8tor found him very quickly hiding up in the rafters of our open barn - a place we didn't even know he could get to. Frightened by all the barking, but at least we knew he was safe and away from the hunting dogs. An absolute outstanding device for tracking our cat and I will be recommending to everyone I know who has troubles like this or just losing their keys. I might even use the second transmitter on my husband!!!!!

I bought this product to attach to my DJI Phantom radio control aircraft after I crashed it in a difficult to reach location. I really wish I had this BEFORE the crash as the recovery effort was quite difficult, and would have been easier if I had the Loc8tor.All parts of this product are of sufficient quality. The controller is remarkably light. I applied velcro to my aircraft and to the back of one of the trackers (I don't know the right term), and attach it to the aircraft. I then also used one of the two small straps provided, connected it to the tracker, and then secured it under a screwed down surface on the aircraft in case it fell off the velcro (unlikely!).The best range would be when the aircraft is off of the ground, such as if it were in a tree. I tested it while hovering in the air at an _ESTIMATED_ 600 feet. I have not yet tested it while it was on the ground, however I would be surprised if it was 200 feet. This would still be very useful. The controller can be paired with up two four trackers. Pairing is trivial. I have not had to re-pair and as such I cannot comment on if that is problematic.I gave this product four stars instead of five due to:1) The battery cover on the remote does not fit well, it is barely attached when inserted properly. Tape this or you will lose it quickly. This is simply poor design and testing.2) Replacement or additional trackers are too expensive. I believe I saw them for $50 each. Seriously??Overall this is a great product which I STRONGLY recommend for radio control fliers; This small investment can make the difference between finding your aircraft and NOT finding it. I now consider it a MUST for all my aircraft.

My Aunt (who is deaf and now suffering from Dementia) "Lost" her keys at home. My son and I spent 2 and a half days searching for her missing (i think hidden) keys, to no avail!!! ( i would like to think that we are both excellent at searching) the only place we didn’t search was the attic as there was no step ladder. 2 days later she arrived in my house with the original keys and the spares in hand wondering why she now has 2 sets?Researched online for solutions to “lost keys” and found lots of so-so solutions that mostly used smart phones or you need to be able to hear… (Clapping and whistling involved) as she doesn’t really do smart phones and due to the so-so reviews, nothing jumped out at me.I vaguely remembered a long time ago in PC Answers (i think?) a review on the locator gizmo. All i could remember was the "8" in the middle of the name. Quick google search later and hey presto, they still made them!!! Watched the attached U-Tube video and quickly ordered the loc8tor lite.It arrived promptly, I spent 2 minutes setting up and connecting to keys and a phone and proceeded to spend the next hour with myself and my boys 'Loc8ting' them, with such ease and great fun.Absolutely AMAZING & SIMPLE bit of kit, the remote is now hanging up under the stairs in her hallway for anyone to use. Would REALLY REALLY recommend above ANY OF THE OTHERS that i have seen?P.S. can’t wait for her to lose her keys again so i can find that elusive hiding place!!!!RegardsMatthew

I bought one of these as my wife is always losing things; keys, mobile phone, purse, etc. With her mobile we can use Find my iPhone, but we needed something for the keys. Just last week we managed to lose the car keys (in the car), we knew they had to be in there somewhere because they are the remote type that has to be in the car for the ignition to work, but it took us ages to finally realise that one of the kids had stuffed them into the glovebox whilst we'd been parked. The kit comes with 2 tags, which is okay, but the extra 2 tags will cost you about £25 from the manufacturer. We'll definitely need more tags as 2 are one enough for the car and house keys. I'm thinking it would be ideal to tag her purse as well, and then think what to use the last tag on.In operation the Loc8tor device works exactly as you would expect it to; you just rotate about until you get the strongest signal and then walk towards it until the frequency escalates to a constant tone. At the same time the little tag on the lost item begins to chirp out a sound, so you can mute the handset to check if you can hear the tag as well. We've already had to use the Loc8tor; I could have told my wife where the car keys were, but I just wanted to make sure she knew how to use the device to find something. Now all I need to do is make sure she doesn't loose the handset!4 stars; 1 deducted as there are only 2 tags in the kit.

I bought mine direct from Loc8tor.The sender is very small, and the dog doesn't even know that it's on his collar. That's a big plus.It works fine, but I've not yet lost the dog in the woods long enough to really test it thoroughly in the undergrowth. I've managed to get a signal when dog is the other side of a tree though, but range is definitely severely restricted in the woods (as the manufacturers say it will be)It takes a few seconds to locate the sender, so you can't just turn around until it lights up. You have to wait a short while and then point it in a different direction and wait a few seconds to be sure you're not going to get a signal. And if you don't get a signal you don't know of course whether you're pointing in the wrong direction, or the dog's too far away, or rummaging around in a ditch, and so hidden from the receiver. So trial and error, hoping that the dog will be moving around, but not too quickly to be evading the receiver. So it's not as good as the ones James Bond uses. But to get a better, stronger location signal, you'd need a GPS device with a monthly subscription. But at the price, and taking into account that you don't need to buy a monthly subscription or pay for a monthly phone sim, it's not a bad device.

This is the second time I bought this item. We put the tags on our Yorkshire Terrier who loves to make a game of hiding in some obscure corner of our house. Once you turn the locator on, usually the first indication is a faint beep coming from the tag. Once you get the hang of it, the locator too directs you to the hiding place. It is useful at distances within 10 or 20 meters in the house, probably farther away in open space - but do not expect it to work across the town. I bought the second unit because we abused the tags on the first one, mainly due to water damage. One of the tags once went into the pool along with our dog. (It would be nice if Amazon sold the tags separately.)These abused tags still work, but they now eat up the battery in a very short period of time. I strongly recommend you buy the "Splashproof Tag Cases" sold separately. Even then be careful with water damage. The batteries ordinarily last for several months. When it is time to change the battery, take the tag to a reputable watch service, and have them replace the batteries with high quality silver oxide watch batteries, and not cheap alkaline versions. Batteries I bought from Amazon, labelled "silver oxide" did not last very long either.

I left my first loc8tor in a pocket and it went through the washing machine...immediately ordered the Lite and paid for Next day shipment - received on time and the new one works even better than the first. I live on 8 wooded acres - flattish but with logs and downfall but not super thick brush. I can not only locate my young cat but I've found the breakaway collar out in the woods as well. Some things I've learned:if you read the info on the range and how it works, you will see that it can not "see" through objects and or ground. So, if I'm not finding Auggie, I hold the locator high to give it a better chance of seeing past contours - and once you get used to the beep sounds, you don't need to see the lights.you need to walk around and point the loc8tor in all directions.READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! - and practice. While I would love if they would make a GPS this size, this is the next best thing for a cat.For pets - I sometimes use it even if I know where he is and then I reward Auggie for coming - he comes when he hears the beep and I want him to keep doing that so even if I'm getting him inside I try to make it fun and give him a treat or some play time/attention. This has been great peace of mind for me.

Having lost two cats in as many years, I was in the market for a device to ensure that it wasn't "third time unlucky". I originally looked at something four times as expensive, but opted for this. The reviews seemed favourable, although I noted that one person's "Loc8tor" had died after only a week - probably due to rain. With this in mind, I wrapped it in a small piece of plastic and secured it with one of those metal ties they used for freezer bags. It's important to play with the device a little at first - maybe get someone to hide one of the tags. The first time I tried it, it took some time to realise that it had either switched itself off after a while or I hadn't switched it on properly.Whenit came to looking for the cat (which we did three times on the first day after receiving the Loc8tor) it succeeded every time. We didn't get a signal immediately, but I walked around the block until it beeped and then I followed the signal from there to a bush in which our treasured moggy was hiding. Bear in mind, of course, that the range isn't outstandingly long and that you will still need to walk around a bit in order to get a signal. Nevertheless, this made the search much, much easier.

Has been a lifesaver for locating our cat at close distances to our house. Works very well in direct line of sight but can be difficult if there are lots of solid walls/objects around. Range drops very quickly when your cat is behind a house or wall. We have a house cat that we don't let out beyond our garden wall but when he has escaped, we have been able to find him within minutes using the tracker just by walking around the house and slowly panning the tracker around. Don't expect accurate readings beyond 50m with lots of houses around... or even a signal beyond 100m but it will definitely help you know when you're getting closer.Have even used it in the car with it pointed out the window to do a quick scan around the block...Battery life has also been great, have had the device for a year using it at least once briefly every two weeks to check it works and I only had to change the battery on the receiver once so far. The beeping and red flashing light on the tag has also been very useful as sometimes if you cannot get an accurate direction, you'll sometimes see the red flashing light at night or a faint beep before the tracker starts... Overall very pleased

The product is very good it is well made and generally works well. I purchased it for finding our cats in a large garden and woodland, I have found that it works over a range of 100ft in open areas. However as the manufacturers say the tags are not sealed so right from the start I have been wrapping the tags in cling film then taping to their collars which keeps the tag dry but has to be checked regularly as they can tear the film when they scratch. However after two weeks I started having a few problems with the tags failing, first couple of times opening the case and closing again was sufficient to re-seat the batteries and start them working again but on one of the tags I have now found that one of the two batteries in each tag,has gone flat so either a defective battery or a fault with the tag which I have yet to confirm.Based on this experience I feel the tags are not as reliable as I would have hoped and each tag really needs to be checked before the cats go out each day to ensure the tags are working to minimise this issue. However when it is working it is very good and enables much quicker search and location of the cats focussed in the right area.
